    I love the hidden implication behind these two episode's title. The Magician, clearly refers to The Doctor. So The Magician's Apprentice is... Clara. Which also mean Missy is The Witch. And that makes Clara the Witch's Familiar. This two-parter is about clever Clara learning from two very different Timelords.

      Yeah! It's a great way to re-establish the arc she's been on with 12 where she's becoming confident in her abilities and being more "Doctor-like," as she's done in Flatline, and play off of the reveal of Missy leading her to the Doctor in the previous finale.

    Well done, world record speed unblocking! I’m sometimes a bit slow on the uptake and didn’t catch it on the first watch of this, but immediately after the Doctor retrieves his sunglasses - which at this stage we don’t know are sonic - he puts them on and quickly scans Davros’s energy portal thingy which houses Colony Sarff, so he knows it is a trap from the outset - hence the line about ‘l knew exactly what you would do and I let you do it’. Also Missy making good on her muttered threat to scratch Davros’s eye out was a brilliant comedic touch.

      Interestingly, ATM, they have 47 episodes left of currently released Who, 47 being the magic Star Trek number. This will put them just over halfway through Season 6 of TNG and 4 episodes after when DS9 chronologically starts. But there's still 11 episodes and one whole season of TNG to go after that, so even with the upcoming series of Doctor Who, we'll be having Trek for a while yet, even if they don't jump into the spin offs.

    Capaldi and Gomez and also Julian Bleach as Davros shine in this and there is so much to love about this, especially the whole 60s Skaro look and the generally amazing sets and location work. Love watching your reactions as usual, especially all the Michelle Gomez appreciation.
    But I have two fairly big gripes about the story itself.
    Firstly, I was deeply uncomfortable with the imagery of, essentially, the Doctor forcing a disabled person out of their 'wheelchair' (ignoring for a moment the disability-as-villainy trope the character inherited from the classic series). Sure, Davros is 'evil', but having The Doctor stoop to such a callous act of violation, then joke about it, just felt totally wrong to me.
    Secondly, I really don't buy the Clara/Missy buddy-cop routine as the last time they met at the season finale Missy was responsible for Danny Pink, apparently the love of Clara's life, being turned into a Cyberman and then next season opener they're trading quips. I think this is why Clara never seems like a real person, she behaves how the plot demands so you never really get a feel for her as a believable person.

    • @obiwankenobi687
      @obiwankenobi687 3 роки тому +2

      Davros is disabled because the plot needs him to be to invent the Daleks. He’s a withered alien on a life support system, crippled because of a nuclear war . He’s not disabled purely because the original writers wanted to show disabled people as villains. I don’t get the whole tired trope argument. They say it about kill your gays, they say it about this, people are moaning about remi Malek in James Bond because he’s scarred. A bully being a closeted gay (which happens in real life all the time) someone even started saying ‘can we stop killing women in tv shows, it’s a tired trope’.
      If we go down this long train of over analyzing things we end up with a world where women can never be shown as victims of anything on tv, where gay characters are never allowed to die, where disabled people can never be villains, and closeted gays can never be bullies.
      This is the doctor who equivalent of pulling Hitler from his life support. Or a similar thing happened when John Lumics chair systems were damaged which forced him to become upgraded. It’s neutralizing an evil enemy by diss-attaching them from their sci fi life support. It’s not ‘forcing a disabled person out of their wheelchair’. And controversially, if it was an actual wheelchair and somebody were to drag Hitler out of it. I don’t think people would have any issues with that either

    • @dutchman8887
      @dutchman8887 3 роки тому

      your first gripe is fucking stupid. get over it. your second gripe is obviously because clara is an intelligent person and understands working with missy is her best chance to get the doctor. yet again another case of "clara behaves how the plot demands" which is really just because somebody did not think enough so blamed the tv!

    It's a shame this reaction ended up being so short, copyright is a right pain.
    While I have rather mixed feelings on "The Magician's Apprentice", I thoroughly enjoyed "The Witch's Familiar" and consider it to be one of the most underrated Moffat episodes. In all fairness it's not without fault, the Daleks are kind of superfluous, and I think the resolution kind of undercuts a lot of the effective drama that the episode had provided us for the first 35-40 minutes. Also, I feel like Clara's kind of strangely written in this episode, she comes across as unusually dim and easily susceptible to Missy's manipulations, which doesn't line up with the more intelligent and proactive character we had in episodes like "Flatline", "Death in Heaven", or even the first half of this story.
    That said, when this episode is good, it is spectacular. The scenes between the Doctor and Davros are amazing, and Peter Capaldi and Julian Bleach give absolutely phenomenal performances. The set up of these two old enemies having one last reunion, with one on the brink of death and asking his oldest enemy for consolation that he did good makes for some highly compelling drama. The way we go from the Doctor being suspicious and furious with Davros, to the point of holding him at gunpoint and stealing his chair, to becoming more empathetic and friendly with him and even sharing a laugh is an unexpected and surprisingly heartwarming direction to go in. You genuinely feel like there's a connection between them, and that this may lead to a burying of the hatchet, which makes it all the more devastating when it's revealed to be a ruse. Still, the ending scene between the Doctor and young Davros does hint at a possible reconciliation between them, and it makes for a rather touching and sweet conclusion to the story.
    Obviously it's not all drama and emotional baggage, as the story's drama is nicely balanced out by the comedy. The script is packed with absolutely brilliant jokes, from the explanation of how Missy and Clara escaped their deaths at the end of part 1, to the Doctor stealing Davros' chair, to the reveal of "the only other chair on Skaro". I love the contrast between the Doctor and Davros' more melancholic and quiet conversations and Missy and Clara's odd partnership as they break into the Dalek City, and while the idea of turning the Master into a comic relief character might have seemed risky, and could've possibly hurt her threat level, it actually does the opposite. As the pair of you astutely pointed out, it continues the trend of the first part's depiction of her as a bit of a wild card, someone who you're not fully sure if you can trust. She's the type of character who gets loads of funny gags and lulls you into a false sense of security, which makes the moment she (either literally or metaphorically) sticks a knife in your back, such as in the scene where she tries to trick the Doctor into killing Clara, all the more effective. I liked Missy before this, but this was the episode where I truly fell in love with her as a character.
    So yeah, a really solid fun emotional episode on the whole. It offers some nice character exploration for the Doctor, Davros and Missy, is really well-directed, and sets up the overarching story of this series in a really interesting way. Series 9 is off on a roll, and we haven't even gotten to the best stuff yet!

    Clara being stuck in a Dalek is one of the instances that really highlights the difference between RTD’s realistic dialogue and Moffats fanciful poetic dialogue that no normal human would talk like. That whole situation where she’s stuck inside the Dalek could be wrapped up so easily. ‘Doctor it’s me, don’t listen to her, Missy locked me in here.’ Or many variations of that same statement. But as much as I love Clara, the whole, ‘I am Clara Oswald, Clara Oswald, (when she can hear quite clearly the Dalek isn’t translating) I would never hurt you, the last thing I would ever do is hurt you’ thing just makes Clara look so dumb 🤦🏻‍♂️ stop being so melodramatic and just explain what’s happened.

    • @localbottlecap
      @localbottlecap 3 роки тому +5

      To be fair, Clara does say “yes it’s me, I’m right here” and the Dalek only translates it as “I am a Dalek” and the Dalek does say “do not listen to her” so presumably Clara is saying a similar thing. Put together, “Doctor it’s me, do not listen to her, Missy put me in here” would have just translated roughly as “I am a Dalek! Do not listen to her! Missy put Dalek in here” which wouldn’t have been very helpful either.

      I disagree. It’s a failsafe. In the scenario a Dalek mutates further and deviates from what a Dalek normally is, it stops them from being able to act on it. It doesn’t guarantee that suddenly all daleks have changed motivation, only that should one ever try, it would be prevented. If anything it shows how far Davros will go to keep his creations “pure”. It also fits into the point of mercy slipping through the cracks, by it being so deeply hidden within Davros (similar to his comments on them showing him respect) And also explains why the paradigm Dalek could beg for Mercy in the Pandorica Opens

      I think you're entitled to your opinion. I personally loved the episode, however Who is famous for contradicting itself, either over decades or even over minutes and occasionally even a real fan is going to say enough is enough. This is the issue with a lot of shows: the casual fan stays with a show because its usually interesting/enjoyable, whereas the real fan loves a show because they identify with it and it becomes part of their very existence, until it betrays them and becomes the worst thing imaginable. (See Disney's Star wars)
