5:41 Assuming a cubic foot of packing peanut weighs 0.18 pounds and a standard 53 foot dry van trailer holds 3,820 cubic feet, the trailer would only weigh 687.6 pounds, or about the same weight as one cubic yard of mulch.

5 mile radius from my house/shop. I’m really fortunate that over years of being a business I have weeded out my lawn mowing customers and plowing customers to where now I only work close to home. I spend more gas in my mowers than my truck during the season, come home for lunch don’t spend money at convenience stores, can quickly return to shop if needed , have many 3 lawn stops then drive 1/2 block for a double,etc...all week long!
Now, I only take new customers if they are in the zone. I live here, I am a neighbor, a friend, a trusted member of our local community this on its own makes the self employment journey even better. You need to be willing to work harder than the outsiders because you don’t get work just because your the local dude and my rates are generally lower because my overhead is low, after all they know where YOU live! I have happily serviced my community for 30 years.

Keith I have been watching your videos for over 5 years. I have never commented once and probably never will again. The reason I watch you is because you have an authenticity that is so rare these days, and so much in need. It is infectious.I don't have any expectations that you will read this comment or reply. But you have my respect. I have 'hidden' in the same industry as you have. I have more to offer than this industry allows me to express and I see the work you do to try and show what else you have to offer. You have more to offer than scrabbling in the dirt (like I am) I hope you get there my friend. I 'see you' and hope other do to. All the best sir.

A business I work with filled their full season of snow plowing by doing one house on the first snow and going door to door asking if the neighbors wanted theirs done for half price. They did over 50 driveways that day and many became return customers. If people have never had services like landscaping or snow plowing done before they may be surprised by how nice a professional can do it.

Great advice. I have a tree business and it’s my second season; I’m driving all over the place, going wherever the demand takes me. Trying to figure out where the best customers are, but it takes time and work. Like you said, some people just buck the prices you give...I know that to get my foot in the door I’ve charged way less than I should have, for way more work than I should have done. I’ve done all sorts of jobs, but my favourite is high difficulty-low volume, because I’ve realized that I’m best equipped (and it’s the most fun) to do that type of work. Lots of yard clean up, pulling out shrubs, weeds, and vines for peanuts, but I get to do cool stuff a lot too.
Last job I did was an entire yard of 20 foot hedges and trimming 2 trees near power lines and the guy lowballed me down $100. Then he drove away in his Porsche, leaving his three BMWs there for me to look at...fucker even revved the engine just to stick it to me. Then I drove home an hour away to go back to the basement I rent.
Anyway, very inspiring video. Been a fan since before I started my thing. Take care, man.

    Lol good video.
I've been in business a year saved up bought my trailer equipment and all , but like you said I'm running from city to city running gas out and wasting my time.
Because I can make 5 or 6 hundred a day I'd the jobs are close but not when I'm traveling 35miles one way
But I am taking your advice about the 5 or 10 mile service area and bombing neighborhoods with cards and the bandit signs in the neighborhoods I choose instead of the crummy bs yards.
Also going to start window cleaning and pressure washing soon.
Already do some smaller tree work
Wanting to get into landscaping but I've got my hands full with this for now .
Just have to get better clientele
    Love the videos brother.

You must have a large list of your clients by now. Awesome to see you have such a strong presence in that neighborhood.
I am interested what software or system you are using to keep track of all of that customer data?
Are you using a CRM or are you doing it all on your own? Quickbooks, etc.
How are you staying on top of your book keeping and customer information?

One day I might be able to afford a choc top at the movies - everything you say is so true, it’s like we have worked together for years, I live in Australia and you seem to have the same problems and we are so far from each other in distance, but the customers are exactly the same. I started doing work so cheap people still want the same price as 9 years ago.

I do lawn care and structure it so every house is within three minutes from the next. So if a potential customer calls and to get to there home is more then about half a mile from any other I service I say no. Also I’ll say no if that property is within that 3 minutes, but to do it puts me more then 3 minutes from the next property.
