- 3 costly mistakes to avoid when taking on landscaping jobs. Knowing your pricing, target market, and your numbers are all very important. 👍
1.) Not putting "rails" up in your business with a clear definitive outline of what you'll do and what you won't.
2.) Not qualifying customers over the phone before driving to their properties can cost a lot of wasted time for both you and the customer.
3.) Not knowing your numbers can lead to you running landscaping jobs off of emotions instead of real math.

My favorite Kalfas line of all the videos . "Oh , you were calling around looking for the best price ? , that's funny ....I was calling all my leads back looking for the person who will pay me the most " friggin spot on
Great points. As I think about this, people tend to balk at landscape prices that require heavy equipment that costs alot of overhead but at a wedding will have no problem paying a DJ a grand to click play on a computer for 5 hours.
Your an inspiration, inspired me to start my own buisness and get off my ass one random night at 2am, threw an ad up not expecting much and my phone rang off the hook the next day, now im working hard and making money. Loving life
The hardest part of starting on my own is not having the experience of knowing how long a job should take....still learning that part.
How have you progressed since? Overall.
This is so SPOT ON......Why is it so hard for these business owners to understand this. They are out there thinking they should do work for ALL. Do work that makes money.
Wife said I should comment and ask if you want to be my bff 😂 Your vlog is great and makes me feel better that I’m not the only guy losing credit cards, changing hitches, giving estimates, haggling with shithead customers 🤣 thanks for all the pointers too! Straight up!
I fucked up 2 jobs and am in $2,000 in debt...im fucking depressed and just overwhelmed, I thank you for making this video but i only wish I had seen this earlier. If anyone is reading this, pray for me.
I make the customers qualify themselves on their voicemail 🤗😂 have them leave name number location and description of work needed 🤷🏻♂️
Lol "and there's bricks in the yard"
"This landscape shop has everything you need."
Next minute:
"Im going to rocks and roots, that shop didnt have any pins."
I hate calling! Sometimes you just need to go there to get a vibe on what the job actually entails. I find when I negotiate the rate over the phone I always wind up unhappy.
I just made a life lesson mistake. I underbid a job. It's the first job of it's kind for me, but I thought, it's not so bad, I'll have it done in about a day and a half. Its day 2 and I'm only half way done. Removing shrubs and trimming some trees. Finishing off with hedge trimming and shaping. I lose sleep over this at night. Wish I had watched this video sooner. 😓😓
Most of us tradespeople have been there. Eat it only once, well done for being brave enough to get it wrong.
Qualifying your leads can also sometimes lead to upset people, which is something I don't understand. I worked for a few waterproofing companies and I've seen bad reviews where customers talk about not being appreciated because you didn't came out to give a quote or they complaint that you shouldn't be charging a fee for quotes since they are going to give you thousands if you get the job, they don't understand that if people don't get the bid they lose time and losing time means you lose money.
Period like I'm in Colorado and would love to learn how to handle Colorado customers
So I've been thinking alot about opening a landscaping business, I was thinking of getting a truck and trailer than get equipments. After that i started thinking of course i gotta find a client to start with and start taking pictures of my days work and than start posting pictures and videos of what ive done and now im on here learning 3 do's and don't, learning of time deficiency or how ever they say it and i believe that i could start off small till im able to expand. I mean i use to make side hustles back in the island and watching your vlog is making me understand more. Thank you, oh yeah most importantly i gotta learn about that paying taxes and insurance coverage and business license
The first 17 minutes are pure gold I liked every single word. A thousand thumbs up.
A great reminder for the start of the season. I am getting ready for this season and my spring letters just got mailed out today.
Thanks Keith, always great to hear your insights. I sometimes take on the scatter job that's outside my area 'rails', but most of the time the customer knows that they are outside my area, so when I tell them there will be an extra fee for travel they are usually alright with it.
I'm getting way better at 1 & 3, but the prequalifying is where I am currently struggling.
Keith another great video. I'm having the same problem with the qualifying part also. I am interested and hopeful after more views and comments maybe some other wise individuals like us will help share some of their Call qualification conversations or questions.
Keith, probably 1 of the best videos I've seen in awhile. I'm going through some growing pains this year and I really needed to hear this one right about now. Thanks again and hope to see ya at GIE
Great video I hear you in my head as leads are coming to me through my phone
Amazing video man. I’m about to release a video on how to figure out your price and not base it off your market.
Knowing your numbers it’s king 👑. Great video.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
Great advice! I’m going to a 500 dollar minimum next spring.
Absolute truths that I am learning at the moment in my own business.
i agree , stay firm on the price . great video .
Keith thank you for the great information! You’ve inspired me to start my own landscaping business I appreciate it
Great stuff!!! Love the Content
Good video! Hopefully alot of people really absorb this information. We find that if you find yourself trying to talk yourself down on the time, like your first instinct is that this area will take an hour to clean, but eeeegggh we can maybe get it done in 45minutes. DONT do that! Usually your first instinct is right. Also, Murphys law, what can go wrong will! Trust yourself and add buffer time for the unexpected. Drivetime is important to include as well! Trust yourself & know your numbers
Awesome advice thanks bud
Im looking to start my own business in the near future, not sure if it will be targeted towards landscaping but regardless; great advice and thankyou!

To make a long story short let's say you do Residential Lawns only. You cut lawns and trim, edging. A small lawn that is 1000 square feet $60. Perhaps $5 / hedges. Just an example

Calk the little miss-cut square in the top left corner where your whiteboard cuts around the fur down...lol. It won’t be noticeable for ur videos. Love ya Kieth Kalfas you’re big inspiration. I’m a huge fan
Yes. Exactly. Haha. Yes I was telling my wife that I know for a fact that everyone is going to notice that little square. Haha.

When you say "Im only human" , you are limiting yourself.
Hey Keith, do you think this rebranding is working for your channel? I think alot of people liked the hustle and bustle of the old videos...
Hey Keith thank you for replying to comments I’ve made it means so much to me, I hope one day I’m half the man you are. I’m going through some really really tough times right now would it be possible to have a one on one and I’ll pay you for your time? Thank you brother hope to hear from you

how much should i charge to do sod ?
Tight shirt dude

I'd buy from rocks and roots even if it doesn't save me money, if it's locally owned. Charge the local economic battery, supporting my local community with my wallet.
