@kelly, when you have used your right hand/fingers to mix your rice and curries, you don't use the same hand to catch/hold those ladles or spoons because your fingers are treated as dirty as they have curries stuck to your fingers and you are sticking them to those spoons which others have to use. Some may treat that as clumsy/bad manners. Since you are not aware of this, they may not treat you at fault but if you continue, it will be taken as a mistake and treat you as a clumsy person. Your right hand can be used to rice and curries and the left hand for small pieces of dry items like papads, slices of carrots, onions, beetroot etc. Both hands are used to tear Roti's and naans/ chapati's/ parathas. Otherwise, you must avoid using your left hand as much as possible. Remember to wash your hands before and after eating.
In Indonesia we have banana leaf meal too. A whole piece of leaf spread on floor of course with mate or carpet, for a group of people face by face along the leaf full of meal and each person have their rice in front of him.
