I remember Hammond being an absolute beast, but I had no idea Craig Anderson was riding on an insane .927 SV% for that season. One of the most underrated goalies of his generation
I remember as an Oilers fan when Anderson shut us out after returning from being with his wife who had cancer. We had so many chances but Craig was a wall. He got all 3 stars that game and deserved it. An absolute beauty
He’s one of the top playoff sv% goalies. The 2017/18 implosion is probably the weirdest result of a super team. Built to win a cup, but the locker room killed the team.
Even in what his 40's? On a terrible sabres team he was often a bright spot and won that team games they had absolutely no business being in. Seemed like the dad for that young core that now seems promising. Youre right. If the sens retired 25 chris neil do you think they do 41 andy?
I remember seeing an interview with Hammond after his run and he talked about a time in college where he did basically the same thing. Had a great streak of excellent goaltending. Its such a shame that he couldn't figure out that consistency.
I remember this season well. I broke my leg in February right around the time the Hamburglar run started, so I was couch ridden the entire time and got to witness it. It was crazy. It got to a point that it didn't matter what the score was, you just knew the Sens would somehow get the win. It was truly magical.
I remember Hammond actually being pretty good in those 4 games with Montreal in 2021-2022. They brought him it because both Price and Allen were injured and the two games I recall he played was a win in his return to Ottawa where he got an ovation from the crowd and stood on his head for I believe a 2-1 win. He also won a game in Calgary. In what was such a miserable season for Montreal I remember him being a bit of a bright spot. I could have sworn he played more than 4 games.
I looked at his NHL page. He played 4 games with the Habs the 2021-2022 season and won 3 games but it doesn’t say what the fourth result was so it is very likely he didn’t start or he didn’t finish that game. He put up a 2.40 AAV and had a save percentage of .920.
I remember this as well. One of the few rays of hope in an absolutely miserable year. His first was a shootout win against the Islanders, and then the Ottawa game. He came in on mop up duty during a loss against Winnipeg (our only one during an 8 game stretch). He suffered the ankle injury during that Flames win (5-4 in OT) that pretty much ended his career in the long run. Adding insult to injury is they just started lifting some of the attendance restrictions at the Bell Centre during this period, but all of his games were on the road. He never got the chance to play in front of the home crowd. Further proving we weren't allowed to have anything nice that season.
Anyone else remember the run from Brian Elliott in his first year with the Blues? In his first 4 years of his career he was a .901 goalie, moves to the Blues and has a .940 in 38 games, 9 (!!!) shutouts and saved 26 goals above expected. One of the best runs from a goalie I've ever seen.
"he did pretty well posting a .914 but only winning 7 starts".....yeah thats not a goaltending problem. Its wild how leagues kill goalies confidence and then wonder why there are so few consistent career goalies anymore.
I agree, I lived in Ottawa 20 years. We were extreme underdogs and we knew it. Most folks I talked to had no hope of beating Pittburgh in that series. We made em work for it but they were clearly the better team
Damn, blast from the past, I loved watching the Hamburglar! What an awesome run. Didn't realize just how insane his stats were. I remember the burgers on the ice and Lazar eating one lol.
I was lucky enough to grab this guy in my fantasy hockey league that season after his 3rd win. My team was already dominating and having him go on that run easily won me the league that year
I remember holding my breath when the playoffs were coming up and the Senators were going up against my Habs. Absolutely terrified but we pulled through that series eventually 😅 loved every second of Hammonds run.
I grew up watching Hammond at BGSU as a young kid with my dad. We were awful my entire childhood and he would rob games in broad daylight. He was the only reason we could even compete in our conference. Absolute BG legend
It didn't help that an early whistle resulted in game 6 ending with a 0-1 loss... though, to be fair, if the Ref could have seen the puck next to Price, he wouldn't have blown the whistle.
Hammond parlaying that run into 3+ mil on a 3 year contract, and then some other NHL playing time afterwards was the best outcome for him. Even if he didn't achieve more as a professional, he set himself up for life (if he was financially smart) and became a legend.
The Devils were no where near the playoffs but the Hamburgler returned to his 2015 form in 2022 when Vegas played the Devils in a critical game for Vegas. Hammond owned the VGK’s shooters stopping 42/44 and the Knights lost out on 2 points that would of clinched them a playoff spot.
That Penguins game was an incredible comeback I was there. It looked like the season was over. And then we just bounced back. I was there it was incredible also Hammond’s Avs runs was pretty good too. I remember he stole a playoff game for them and one of the Avs player after the victory yelled out “Fucking Hamburgler, bud”
Would you entertain the idea of making a video about the 2016-2020 oilers? Like the pre Hyman oilers pretty much. As an oiler fan I find it interesting how promising 2016-17 looked and then how bad they were after that
I don't think Hammond's lesser numbers in his second season had anything to do with him personally. I think Ottawa has to be taken to task more for how much they screwed over both Hammond and Mike Condon in giving them no support up front and then dumping them back into the minors. Ottawa has just always been a dysfunctional team it seems. Anytime Hammond was called back up he played solidly, nearly led the Avalanche to the second round of the playoffs in 2018, and was great for the Habs in spot starts. He was an amazing bright spot in an otherwise completely dim 2021-22 season. He was traded to New Jersey so he could get more NHL's starts as St. Louis had no room for him, and he was one of 8 or so goalies who suited up for the Devils that season. A 4.02 was good for that Devils team.
The untold story of Andersons hand injury. Was he came home from the bar at 3am he tried cooking chicken. He used a cutting knife to seperate the frozen chicken and he sliced his hand. The story got out on TSN 1200 and Craig and the sens were pissed.
I remember that year it was insane being fucked to getting into the playoffs. Too bed Hammond sucked in the playoffs but he’s never played in that vibe before so i understand it. What a time.
that star forward he was saying wasn't doing great and struggling ended up being the future Stanley Cup champion captain for the VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS! unreal stoney thank you Ottawa
I sold one of his Young Guns Exclusives #/100 for $1,800 to some sucker during this run! 😂😂 You could probably get all 100 of them for under $1,800 today.
I love when third string goalies no one has heard of go on a tear it’s so fun
We stan Matt Murray around here, go Pens go
Like, Arturs Sîlovs
@@RandomOilersFan watching him made me have heart attacks when they played the oil 😂

Curtis Lazar enjoying that post-game burger will forever be burned into my memory.
I still have a Lazar jersey from the burgers. 😅
I remember seeing an interview with Hammond after his run and he talked about a time in college where he did basically the same thing. Had a great streak of excellent goaltending. Its such a shame that he couldn't figure out that consistency.
20-1-2 is an insane record
that 2015 team is my favourite sens team. it always makes me smile whenever i think about them. solid work boss

The tandem Halak and Elliot had in Blues is to this day the best stat wise season since prime Brodeur/Hedberg.
Moose!
The Jeremy Lin of the NHL.
Lin won a trophy though.
As a habs fan, i rememebrr facing him in the playoffs. He still has his place in NHL history.
Being hot for a few months doesn’t make you special.
Im curious because I didn’t watch hockey back then was he notable in the series?
@@Aiden_Baars Not really. He lost all of his games, and he got replaced.

"he did pretty well posting a .914 but only winning 7 starts".....yeah thats not a goaltending problem. Its wild how leagues kill goalies confidence and then wonder why there are so few consistent career goalies anymore.
I lived in Ottawa during this and it was wild. There was more buzz around the Sens during this than during their trip to the ECF a few years later.

Met Hammond a few times as he's local to my area. Real nice dude, helped him get set up with a home gym during the pandemic.
This was wild. One the best stroies in the history of nhl. Hamburgaler!
Love learning more about goalie's careers they seem so odd compared to most of the stories I hear about players.

I appreciate that!
The Hamburgler! I grew up a leafs fan, but was living in Ottawa at the time and this is my favourite NHL memory!
if senators could score in front of andersen and if he didnt get injured senators would have been a lock for confrence finals change my mind
It didn't help that an early whistle resulted in game 6 ending with a 0-1 loss... though, to be fair, if the Ref could have seen the puck next to Price, he wouldn't have blown the whistle.

Great job!
This was amazing. Love it.
Hammond and Dubnyk both had crazy runs that year
A blast from the past, I haven't thought about this guy in a minute
Not a Sens fan, But this was a remarkable stint. The Hamburglar will live on
Bro was having Braden holtby prime numbers
I will always remember Hammond. I still have my jersey from when he first arrived in Ottawa. Hamburglar.
Lehner was remembered most for his one year as an islander
I remember Lehner from his Buffalo days actually. I thought he was a decent starter there, never elite, though.
And yet Robin took the lightning to the Stanley cup finals.

When Matt Murray came out of nowhere and won Pittsburgh the Stanley Cup when Fleury got injured. That was amazing.
really hoped this guy was gonna stick around longer. that hamburglar gimmick was gold
his NHL stats are 31-20 2.56 GAA and .916 SV% in 67 games , pretty good
Matt Murray.
