a lot of people seem to think the song is about neglectful and abusive parents but if you pay attention to the lyrics it shows a lot more than that and even cancels out entirely that its about the parents with the chorus "I know you miss those kisses There are so many fishes" ( I mean come on guys you don't say that about your parents do you?), so I just wanted to say what I believe I think the song is about while actually consulting the lyrics. I think its about someone whos life is in black and white, everything is painful and dull, she can only see the bad that happens and nothing good shines through to her. it fits with the verses lyrics how she says "you could" to nothing but bad things. like its all she thinks about. then she falls in love with someone, but its different, safer, warmer, more real and that person became everything to her, life was wretched without them and now all the bad doesn't matter to her. her entire world was this person and nothing else mattered as long as she had them. she couldn't see any life without them, but something bad simply happened like usual and that person left her. with them gone she was stuck, she thinks shell never find someone else, shell never love anyone else that way, she wants to see them hold them kiss them again but she cant. I think that's when the chorus comes into play. it seems like its meant to be someone else sees what she's going through and realizes she needs consoled, they tell her that your meant to have relationships and they are meant to end, its how you grow and that for now it may feel like everything's over but in time your papercuts will heal, you'll grow and learn from it, you'll find someone else and with past experience maybe even someone better and one day you'll laugh that you thought you never would. which brings her back to the thoughts of all the bad things that could happen. "If you get cut, you can always get a bandage" that comes from the end of the second verse is where I think she's starting to realize that she WILL heal from it and she will even grow as a person in the process but she has to allow herself to, she has to put on a Band-Aid and let it take its time to heal.

Now I’m not saying I don’t like her already released music because personally I think all of her music is incredible and I am so happy she’s out there because she just has an amazing voice along with meaningful meanings behind the lyrics. So much love for Melanie and I hope she realizes how much of an amazing artist and just person in general. Obviously I’ve never personally met her or talked to her but just from her music you can tell she has a very unique outlook on life which is kind of hard to find in a lot of music these days and I really admire that about her. @@yucky7020 That’s the only part that could possibly make us think it’s about a break up. Its pretty obvious that its about child neglect, but I still understand your theory.
trigger warning- s/h & suicide i interpret this song to be about self harm, or at least self deprecating practices. in an unhealthy way, crybaby is talking to herself (or maybe to another kid about trauma in an overly casual manner because she herself conditions her mind using the same unhealthy coping). she’s doing this to rationalize her coping methods (cutting) and playing down her own traumatic experiences by using dramatic depictions of “hypothetical” (these may have happened to her) scenarios. i do think it’s obvious that crybaby was neglected “i know you miss those kisses.” this “don’t be sad it’s really not that bad for you, it’s only just a little paper cut or two” can symbolize her preparing to s/h and attempting to calm herself. “there are so many fishes” i think this line is referring to her looking into a river or large body of water, preparing to drown herself, and absently noticing the amount of fish in the water, mentally distracting herself from the gravity of the decision that she’s contemplating overall there is a theme of downplaying the severity of traumatic events, removing herself from these bad situations, and disassociating from the pain by feeding herself distractions and attempting to make her trauma seem less so that she doesn’t have to cope with it so rawly.
i just imagine this mv being like the first song in k-12 where melanie is telling herself that its not that bad for her etc in her home before leaving to k-12

But when Jack's around mommy gets slapped
And if you tell mommy that she deserves better
You'll have to cover up your bruises with a sweater
I know your heart is broken
Feels like your world's been stolen
I promise that it could be worse
I know you miss those kisses
There are so many fishes
I promise that it could be worse

a lot of people are saying this song could be about the parents not caring/ a breakup but i think it could also mean a way you judt tell yourself to get over any issue and it helps you get through it
It can't be about parents not caring bc what is "Ik you miss those kisses, there are so many fishes"
Oh I love this so much
this is perfect
Lyrics:
Don't be sad, it's not that bad for you
It's only just a papercut or two
Don't be sad, you will be laughing someday soon
It's only just a paper cut or two
It's only just a little paper cut
(cut x4)
You could get hit be a care or a train
Or get electrocuted in the rain
You could find a monster in your closet by your sneakers
You could find out that monster is actually your teacher
You could have a dad with a friend named Jack
But when Jack's around mommy gets slapped
And if you tell mommy she deserves better
You'll have to cover up your buries with a sweater
I know your heart is broken
Feels like your world's been stolen
I promise that it could be worse
I know you miss those kisses
There are so many fishes
I promise that it could be worse
(it could be worse)
Don't be sad, it's really not that bad for you
It's just a little paper cut or two
Don't be sad, you will be laughing someday soon
It's only just a little paper cut or two
It's only just a little paper cut
(cut x4)
Could've been a baby in a carriage
With beautiful blue-eyed parents
If mommy said she never told a lie
Then why the fuck do you have big brown eyes?
You could break a hip, you could loose your teeth
You could swallow a spider in your sleep
You could find a razor in your peanut butter sandwich
If you get cut, you can always get a bandage
I know your heart is broken
Feels like your world's been stolen
I promise that it could be worse
I know you miss those kisses
There are so many fishes
I promise that it could be worse
(it could be worse)
Don't be sad, it's really not that bad for you
It's just a little paper cut or two
Don't be sad, you will be laughing someday soon
It's only just a little paper cut or two
It's only just a little paper cut
(cut x4)
Don't be sad, it's really not that bad for you
It's just a little paper cut or two
Don't be sad, you will be laughing someday soon
It's only just a little paper cut or two
It's only just a little paper cut
I love this song❤

Unpopular opinion:
Mels unreleased songs >> mels released songs
AGREED.
T W
.I feel like this song is about self harm
"paper cut or two" your gonna cut yourself "don't be sad it's really not that bad for you" meaning it won't be that bad and that you can probably stop "you can find a razor in your peanut butter sandwich, if you get cut you can always use a bandage" can mean that you can find a razor anywhere to use and if you cut too deep don't worry there should be a bandage somwhere.
Idk it's just my take on it.
What you say makes sense, but this song is most likely about child neglect/toxic or abusive parents. But in a certain way, it could also maybe be related to sh.
I dunno why but I come listen to this song for comfort
Melanie Martinez's unreleased songs are such a bop 🥰🥰
Her voice sounds so different now
This chorus is so sia coded omgg
Amazing!
Best song to cry to
Sounds good.
This song is so sad but I just looked at the meaning for it and it's basically about her breakup and it's so sad how she has to go through that and she's just amazing
Welp this is first comment.
BTW This song is so BOP Can't get over it.💘
Have you heard "haunted" and "a thousand words" those are 🔥
@@lexyc9013 omg YESSS you can't lie rocking horse is also a bop
@@lexyc9013 and "I scream" it fits so well for her character crybaby
@@lexyc9013 i did and totally agree they're fire
so good 🙌
I think this song is about getting over a breakup
I’m pretty sure it’s about a abusive household and child neglect. It makes a lot more sense tbh
@@_AsTheWorldTurns I get how you could think that but when she says “I know you miss those kisses, there are so many fishes” is how people say “there’s plenty of fish in the sea”
@@yucky7020 That’s the only part that could possibly make us think it’s about a break up. Its pretty obvious that its about child neglect, but I still understand your theory.
La voz de Melanie, es la de un ángel :D
simmmm ❤❤
I really miss this song!!
GOD DAMN IT I WROTE A SONG ABOUT PAPERCUTS THINKING MELANIE DIDNT THINK OF THAT BUT 😭😭
can you comment the lyrics? i’m interested
@@hash_tv275 I deleted it a while ago since it was cringe🧍🏻♀️😭
Omg this song 🎵
This song is literally the definition of
“Could’ve been worse”
trigger warning- s/h & suicide
i interpret this song to be about self harm, or at least self deprecating practices. in an unhealthy way, crybaby is talking to herself (or maybe to another kid about trauma in an overly casual manner because she herself conditions her mind using the same unhealthy coping). she’s doing this to rationalize her coping methods (cutting) and playing down her own traumatic experiences by using dramatic depictions of “hypothetical” (these may have happened to her) scenarios. i do think it’s obvious that crybaby was neglected “i know you miss those kisses.” this
“don’t be sad it’s really not that bad for you, it’s only just a little paper cut or two” can symbolize her preparing to s/h and attempting to calm herself.
“there are so many fishes” i think this line is referring to her looking into a river or large body of water, preparing to drown herself, and absently noticing the amount of fish in the water, mentally distracting herself from the gravity of the decision that she’s contemplating
overall there is a theme of downplaying the severity of traumatic events, removing herself from these bad situations, and disassociating from the pain by feeding herself distractions and attempting to make her trauma seem less so that she doesn’t have to cope with it so rawly.
i wish melanie makes a album for the songs that people leaked
i just imagine this mv being like the first song in k-12 where melanie is telling herself that its not that bad for her etc in her home before leaving to k-12
Wait I've never heard this ahhh
❤
Coming back to this song when I’m single again
does anyone knows where can i hear all of her unreleased songs?
there are many youtube channels where you can listen to them but soon I will be uploading all their unrelaseds, with the exceptions of mm3
@@andreslittlebow7890 stop doing that! Melanie dosent want her unreleased songs out
@@courtneyyy7708 actually she only doesn’t want the ones from mm3 out, the scrapped ones from the crybaby, k-12, and after school era are ok since she isn’t using them on an upcoming album
@@courtneyyy7708 stans like you are embarrassing. first off, if you dont want to support her unreleased music then why are you here?? second off, melanie doesnt gaf if its from dollhouse, crybaby, k12, or after school. just not mm3
