This was heartbreaking, the thing that broke me and when tears burst was Meleys' look at Rhaenys when Vhagar was holding it's neck.

It was impossible for Rhaenys to steer Meleys’ dead body into the water. She knew it was over. Her partner in life is dead and so she dies fully realizing That she accomplished her duty and tried her best. Beautiful acting from Eve Best (would hope some awards recognition) because she was Catelyn Stark level devastating in this episode.
Eve best is so amazing! I loved her in nurse jackie and was soooo happily surprised to see her back in this great primetime show !

Definitely got to wait for a dream of spring to find out for sure. Probably going to be released after 2030 at the earliest.

What they did was brilliant not just this ep but the set up. They made the audience restless for a battle then it came and broke everyone’s heart. Almost makes you regret ever asking for the battle episode at all.
Edit: Also I feel like Rhaenys wanted out before she could see all the coming blood shed especially if her granddaughters were to be among the casualties.
This!! I feel like she had lost so much, Laena is dead, Rhaenys was made to believe Laenor was dead, Rhaena was sent away and Baela is a dragon rider who will eventually go into battle. She’s lost so much already, Lord Corlys refused to make Rhaena heir to Driftmark and found out on this episode that her husband had a bastard son (possibly more). She’s lost so much already that going into battle first was giving her some purpose and something to do since everything else that has happened to her and her family has been out of her control. And perhaps going into battle first gave her a chance to choose how to go.
That was some of the best dragon VFX I’ve ever seen, rivaling Hollywood movies. HBO’s production values are unparalleled.
Yeah I’m not sure what kind of screen grace watched this on. Dragons were not at all blurry for me
Vahgar stepping on those 2 soldiers, is what Grace was referring. I think the action of stepping on the soldiers looks kinda too cgi for me, but not enough to judge the show harshly. I didnt see any blurriness though 🤷♂️

In this world the Starks are kind of like Canada - rich in resources, that are also mostly frozen, and lacking in people. Hence why they're not that big of deal in Westerosi politics.

It’s kind of puzzling why just send a solo dragon. In air warfare you would always send multiple planes (or dragons) to establish air superiority and not give the enemy a single target.

Btw, she was a dragon rider, it was her mission. She couldn't fall back. She knew the war had started and would eventually die. So might as well die fighting and cause as much damage as possible.
Or she could escape to fight another day, or lure Vaghar to Dragon Stone to get dragon ganked. There were options, but she went for the drama of it all.
Thats what i thought too. That dragonriders fought to the death, hence why the dance of the dragons nearly ended targaryen reign over westeros.

This whole episode had me riddled with anxiety because I knew what was to come. The queen who never was on her mount the red queen were my absolute favorite in the entire series. I’m sad to see her go, but she went out like a true dragon queen.
literally SAME! I'm glad it wasn't exactly like the book bc I think it works this way. Especially w all the animosity the past few eps between aemond and aegon. IF only daemon didn't throw a temper tantrum and met rhaenys at rooks. that would've been cool to see what aemond would've done.
I think I have to disagree with you Grace, on one thing. This show has not felt slow to me at all. Even though last week’s episode was practically all talking, it was intense! There was a lot of tension and revelations. Sometimes in GoT and now in this show, some of the best moments are within the dialogue and acting itself. So, I do feel this show is progressing at a great pace, and is on par with peak GoT. Just my opinion though.
I think Rhaenys doesnt retreat because she wants her death to be full dragonrider warrior: kicking and punching to the (quite literally) explosive end. Kinda parallels Laena's death back in season one where both characters eschew potentially more "practical" options to retain agency and go out on their own terms.
The Starks become very important later on, we might get our first glimpse of the Northmen with the Winter Wolves this season

After how disappointing the White Walker storyline was in GOT, this more “intimate” is more enjoyable
Meley's is a lot more formidable in the books. It took Vhagar and sunfyre tag teaming her to beat her. She is also closer to Vhagar in size than the show depicts
Meleys is big but nowhere close to Vhagar, also the book isn't a 1 to 1 to what really happened, those are in world transcriptions.

I’ve been looking so forward to action that I kind of forgot it would be dragon on dragon violence and I was an anxious mess the last 20 minutes. Rhaenys and Meleys were phenomenal and it broke my whole heart.
This was the jump the shark moment for me. Rhaenys death was so dumb and went against her own character.
to be fair, dialogue has worsened this season and they are stretching the plot so thin that its very hard to go along with it... Like I agree with her this should've been half of episode 3, seeing how they made the battle last 3 minutes.

Better yet maybe actually read it!! Instead of taking other people’s quotes about what the show picks from the book. It doesn’t have a narrative story it’s a history book!!
Just like season 1’s ending. Knew it was coming but it was still horrific to watch. Amazingly done.
I wish the show had deviated from the books and kept Rhaenys around for much longer. She had some beautifully written, incredible quotable lines. And, out of all the mainline Targaryens, she is arguably THE MOST fit to rule... in terms of temperament, measured responses, and wisdom. Plus Eve Best is badass and brought such a charismatic presence to the character. She will be missed. R.I.P. Now that she's gone, who is going to give Rhaenyra constant reality checks, put Daemon in his place, narrate the tale, provide juicy trailer soundbites? Maybe Rhaenys will return in flashbacks or mystical sequences like young Rhaenyra. Maybe she haunts Corlys. I hope there is some moving fantasy sequence involving her spirit at peace knowing that Laenor is living his best life, and still alive all this time.
Grace…I too asked this question. Why are the dragons, who are supposed to be smart so willing to kill? They’re bonded with their riders so it’s not that they think people are bugs.

Grace, there was no way Rhaenys could control where her dead dragon would land. Not sure how that’s a comical moment unless there was some other moment during the battle when she landed on the castle (I do not recall any)

i was thinking Vhagar was Laena's dragon and Laena and Rhaenys seemed close so they probably saw each other often via dragon rise so Meleys and Vhagar probolby hung out. I wonder if Meleys was confused as to why Vhagar was hurting her which makes this more sad.
I think i was more sad from the way Meleys sees Rhaenis when is been killed, was heartbreaking
The dagger was also in S1 of GOT, used in the assassination attempt on Bran/framing of Tyrion by Baelish
They should have more patients, I have read the source material so I known what was coming, they added a little more of drama, and Daemon fighting his own demons apart from the war, Rhaenys is the first casualty, but there would be more, I have the feeling that Rhaenyra would lose another of his sons by the end of the season, but Cole wont survive this season either.
Too soon for Cole to die i think, that's more towards the series finale.
As an animal lover, this episode was the hardest to watch yet with the dragons savagely killing eachother at their riders command and shrieking in pain as they were mortally wounded. I was a little kid again having to remind myself that ‘dragons aren’t real’ and it’s all just fantasy.

Aegon wasn't even all that bad of a king, had it been a period of peace. He was inexperienced, not trained to be king, just been promoted out of nowhere. He was not overly cruel and tried to be nice to the small folk. And we know how teenagers are especially when they think nobody listens to them
I picked up on Aegon now being disfigured like his Dad - just after Alicent said to be more like his dad!

You are reading to much into this, because Daemon is actually successful in his campaign in the Riverlands, so successful that the crown need to send more soldiers, open the gates to Kings Landing, but of course, that without more fire and blood, and a lot of destruction.
I feel as though the bond between the dragon rider and the dragon are deeply connected emotionally and physically. We were able to see last season how Syrax physically became unstable during the birth and ultimate death of Visenya. In that moment, she shared Rhaenyra’s pain. Just as Caraxes felt pain when Daemon was injured with an arrow last season during a battle in the stepstones. I believe this is why the dragons are willing to battle one another because of the riders deep reason or passion for their cause.
She and her dragon went back knowing they were going to commit suicide (thus that look they gave eachother) right over the castle, it was on purpose to kill as many as she could, she was doing her full duty to protect team Black. Imo.
The castle was theirs tho... Criston was sieging the castle. Melys breaking the wall gave Criston's men easy access to enter and win the siege.

Gwayne isn't just a writing tool for Christin's dialogue. He is a symbol of Alicent's lack of faith in Chrisin. Much like her son, she sees incompetence and tries to duck tape it the best she can. It's just another way team Green has incompetent players.
I'm totally on the opposite with Grace on this show. My least favorite episodes are the ones where dragons fight each other. Dragons dieing really ruins my day. I know it's inevitable, but I wish it wouldn't have happened until seasons 5, 6.

So basicly the Song of Fire and Ice was pointless, as it was nobody that killed the Night King.

The criticism of this show reminds me that people did not watch GOT week to week until seasons 7/8. The original GOT was very “slow” and very politics based. There was only one or two big moments each season…. People are expecting something that never was.
Meleys such a beautiful dragon especially the shot where she’s arriving at rooks rest. Rip meleys and Rhaenys .
There was something so perverse about watching the dragons fight each other. It made me feel bad. I know why Rhaenera didn’t want them to fight each other.
We’re in this “corner” because almost all of us GOT fans (show & book) wanted the story of the Targaryens told!! I’m happy being in my corner.

Correct. That’s king of inevitable when you adapt lore as opposed to the main series. No spin-off show will ever come close to matching the scope of Game of Thrones. Nor should they try. Scope isn’t inherent to quality. They should simply focus on nailing the execution as much as possible.
The attack on Rock's Nest was just to entice Rhaenyra into sending a Dragon there, since it's so close to Dragon's Stone, that's why Aemond was hiding with Vhagar.
