Tofu is only bland if it's not seasoned. It's like noodles. The noodles themselves are flavorless, but that's why they're sauced up or put in broth.
tofu has alot of ways to be prepared, i bet he only ate the silk tofu which really tastes nothing even if it has soy sauce

Never had tofu, but the way i’ve had it described made it sound like it’s basically the kind of ingredient you use to support other ingredients. In other words, it takes on the flavor and the properties of what it is prepared with.
To be honest, i would considered tofu as acquired taste just like durian, one with different cultures may find tasty while others from different cultures will say it taste weird or disgusting.
Me myself doesn't eat that kind of tofu but i like the spongy tofu, easier to absorb the broth like how Uncle Roger like Laksa Curry
I like eating tofu regardless of the sauce. I just love the texture and it’s a nice refreshing tofu ☺️

@@malte4984 Korea is much harsher, if you aren't into a Major company like Samsung, Hyundai, LG after your SAT's you are considered a failure or an outcast, the working hours are a bigger problem in Japan but the education situation is much harder and rough in korea, also they have a mass bullying problem and the strict hierarchy, japan is more laid-back and open to other jobs, in korea you basically get a job at the major companies or you are a flop.

If NA didn't adhere to the food pyramid where carbs are 70% of a meal they'd cure most heart disease patients. Notice how rice is just a small portion of the Japanese school lunch. In NA, you'd get a whole side of fries and a biscuit or bread roll, along with your sesame bun burger.

Lunch is different everyday in Japanese schools and it might surprise you but they actually do serve other foods like hamburgers not only “slimy fish”
Imma just say, Tofu can taste phenomenal depending on how you prepare it. I feel like a lot of western places just don't season the tofu, which makes it taste horrible.
On its own, true its bland, but even with just a dabble of soy sauce, its a good side dish. Some places also do super well-made tofu hamburgers too.
Just gotta get the right stuff, like all foods.

not only in schools but japanese and in general asian 711s have the most delicious looking food. it's making me so jealousss. my grandpa used to often take me to 點心 (or dim sum) and it was amazing but I wish I could have something as good as that for school lunch or having fresh 叉烧包 at a 711 sadge
It’s been a while but I used to go to elementary school in Malaysia. I remember during lunch they serve fried chicken, fried rice, fried noodles, cheesy hotdog buns, egg tarts, etc. Now I eat vague slop for lunch PepeHands

It's true tho. 1.5-2 dollars a day for a lunch at school is accurate in many places here in Asia, especially if it's a public school. I used to get 1.75 dollars a day on Junior Highschool and 2 dollars a day on Senior Highschool and that amount keeps me fed the whole 8hr class.

Tofu is only kinda shit when you eat it plain/barely seasoned.
Tofu is essentially a sponge, it's purpose is to absorb flavors around it so by being mostly tasteless itself it lends itself really well to a variety of dishes/marinades and in turn boosts the nutritional content quite easily.

I think until junior high school, japanese schools make it an effort to make sure every single student eats all their food and not waste anything. That's a big reason why they put so much emphasis on making the food actually look and taste good
As someone who lives in Japan and has had these lunches (kyuushoku, 給食), I am so thankful that they are balanced and healthy. I have also had "American" lunches or school food…and uhm it’s pretty disappointing ngl.

It depends on the state/district ig. In Ohio it’s pretty trash. Hockey puck Salisbury steak, flavorless mashed potatoes, spoiled peas, and milk that tastes like cardboard. But hey at least it’s free thanks to the pandemic.

As an Asian NA kid I grew up with Tofu as one of my favorite food staples. Asian cuisines just use tofu better. I’m sure I’d have felt a lot better eating this food than the stomach bloating shitty tomato sauced frozen pizzas that I actually got from school caf.

back when i was in school our lunches were so bad i live in france and we were not spoiled like that we had the same shit everyday for a week before they change to a new meal for a full week and the meals were so small japan is spoiled AYAYA THEY WIN (edit i forgot to tell you the food was great though tasted really good just was so small unlike what japan got)
