The Christmas Song was written by Mel Torme and Bob Wells on a sweltering July day in 1945, in just 45 minutes, as an attempt to "cool off" by imagining wintry scenes. The song was inspired by Wells' childhood memories of street vendors selling roasted chestnuts in Boston during the holidays. Nat King Cole, who fell in love with the tune, recorded it in 1946, his version has since become the definitive recording of this beloved Christmas classic. Cole recorded the song multiple times, with the 1961 version becoming the most iconic. The song has been covered by nearly 2,000 artists since its release.
