OMG I didn't know he had died this year. This was one of my favourite songs of Eurovision even though it got nul points and is not in English. RIP Jahn Teigen.
Heavens! I didn't know about Jahn. He graced Eurovision again after this immortal performance. I will always remember Jahn Teigen fondly, I thought this song and performance epic, one of the reasons I loved Eurovision. RIP Jahn.
This is what Eurovision was all about, enthusiastic performance and enjoying the moment, this was Jahn doing his thing. This was live folks, and not many vocalists in todays format would have been comfortable with that. Jahn Teigan a Eurovision legend nul points or not.
It is almost sad that he declined the job as vokalist in Genesis, but he wanted to focus n his band Pupul Ace/Pupul Woh, witch stranded. he really has an enormous voice, it is just sad thet he never got appreciated outside of norway.
IMO, one of the best Norwegian ESC entries ever, and on my list of best Eurovision entires ever. You can hear Jahn Teigen's rock voice and his vocal capacities here, and see his wonderful sense of comedy in the performance. A multi-talent of a guy, if ever there was any, give his 1970s band Popol Ace a listen - and other suggestions UA-cam recommends when you write Jahn Teigen in the YT search. Epic. A legend.
This is such a great song! And what a great performer! Zero points, it’s a disgrace by the new voting system to let this happen. If only Jahn could have sung this with the Metropole Orchestra conducted by Dolf van der Linden, wow, the brass section would have sounded much better. Now they effed it up. Ah, one can only dream :)
I always loved this song. It should have got a lot of points. It didn't deserve nul points. There was a documentary in the uk in the 70's about the Eurovision and the presenter famously said about this song, because of Norway being the only country with nul points by the time of the last countries votes and I suppose we all like to see if any countries end up with nul points, it's kind of a good novelty to have to your credit. He said, I was on the edge of my seat, because if Spain had given them one point it would have spoilt it. Sorry to hear that he has died, I didn't know that RIP Jahn Teigen. In my eyes he was one of Eurovision's all time legends. ☹
The vocals and arrangement remind me a lot of Avenues and Alleyways-era Tony Christie. You say overwrought, I say passionate and dramatic. And the lyrics are true poetry. Love everything about this (except the visuals). Way better than the recorded version.
Rest now, you're tired Rest your body before your power ebbs out Water pipes into your shoes You wander in the rain Miles after miles after miles After miles after miles after miles Search for me if you long Straighten your mind towards another place Come here where I am where the sun is close You must not go Miles after miles after miles After miles after miles after miles And it's far to go It's the longing that drives you Against a light you can see, but not me Imagine now, where do you go You have been walking too long Miles after miles after miles After miles after miles after miles Imagine now, where do you go You have been walking too long Miles after miles after miles After miles after miles after miles After miles after miles after miles After miles after miles after miles After miles
We are so proud of JanTeigen in Norway(R.I.P.). Its so strange to tell that he has past away...Will always remember 1978.."Mil etter Mil", but its so much much more he did...Thank`s Jan!Your ESC 16 times on ESC should be enough for Guinness Records Book.
His silly performance and clothing were clearly not understood by the international juries. If he performed it like he did during the Norwegian national final, he might have done better in the ranking.
Silly perfomance??? are you kidding me. He was one of the Prima Vera, thats a silly group, that i understand. Eurovision and silly goes hand in hand. Tha freaking contest got won by a beard woman. give me a break. And watch this 2:49 I think maybe he was not silly enough.
The musical arrangements are too much. The melody is nice and simple, but in this performance the orchesta plays the main role. They should have kept the style - and the chords - from the studio recording. But Jahn Teigen is great - as always was !
It's funny that a lot of the comments think this is intended to be a passionate performance when it's actually anger and sabotage! The singer - Jahn Teigen didn't like the chosen arrangement of the song by composer Klouman. While at selection it had been more sax based and the live band a bit more muted - the song, once it reached finals, now had a brassy big band arrangement. You can see at 30 seconds in when Jahn starts and the big brassy horns comes in, he's visibly irritated and that seems to be the point at which he decides to not take it seriously and starts throwing in wobbled notes and messing about. At the time Eurovision wasn't what it was today yet with the gimmicks and was considered a proper "song contest" so Teigen's antics didn't go down well with the juries of 1977. When Teigen's record version came out post-contest, "Mil etter Mil" had more of a slower tempo with a rock rhythm arrangement instead.
I came to find this video because i saw on another video about songs with 0 points, someone had mentioned he deserved 0 points cause he sabotaged it and the first thing i noticed when i watched this was the band in the back ground looking at him like WTF when he starts going off track lol you can literally see the guy above the piano guy double take and the piano guy looks so confused at points.
It wouldn't surprise me! I was to young at the time, so I didn't know. Jahn was a spilloppmaker (can't find a suitable, English word) of the rare kind, and went his own way. Legendary performance! You gotta love him.
How Israel won with a non-sensical song piece of claptrap whilst this failed to score is beyond me! No wonder some countries turned off the broadcast during the voting.
This is not a good example of a song to use to try to convince people to bring back live music to the ESC! This orchestral version was overwrought and vastly inferior to the simpler rock arrangement on the studio version.
+Robyn Gallagher I personally think Kloumans jazzy arrangement is ten times better the boring studio arrangement. But I can understand there are different opinions. The simpler rock arrangement also contains strings, and could have been used if it wasn't for the fact that it was not recorded before after the competition was over. In general I must say that what make live performances interesting is the fact that it is actually live, that things sometimes can go a bit wrong or in most cases that the artist and musicans together make the performance stronger and more energic.
nah.. I prefer this slightly jazz-inspired arrangement. The studio arrangement is good aswell, but it's more of a standard pop/rock arrangement of the times. Actually, my favourite version is from the Norwegian final, with the exact same orchestral arrangement as in Paris, but with a much better sound mix/production.
R.I.P. Jahn Teigen. We Norwegians have lost one of our greatest singers ever!
You still have Alexander Ryback

He was very bitter about this apparently.
