    I was positive for GBS with both pregnancies. I received enough antibiotics during my first delivery, but I delivered my second child so fast I only had enough time for one dose. All was well, and both kids were fine. I had awesome follow-up with the midwives.

    I am due in a week and a half! I was tested positive when they did the swab test. I was an emotional wreck! I thought I did something wrong. Felt like my body betrayed me. This video is so helpful. I am so worried for my baby... its frustrating that everyone I have talked to is like oh its fine don't even worry about it. But I am worried about it. I want him to come out healthy and the thought that my body could be a reason that he has complications or an illness of some sorts just kills me inside. I am very nervous after reading other comments about getting the IV antibiotics.. I'm hoping it doesn't burn or hurt. After watching this it has definitely put me more at ease but gosh... what a scary thing to go through especially being a first time mom! I'm just hoping for the best outcome!! Thank you for making this video and to the other people leaving there comments! Definitely helps and makes me not feel so alone!! ❤

      @@Emendoza30 Hii! Thanks for asking, Thankfully no issues regarding being positive for gbs. I got my IV antibiotics but I would highly recommend you to request them to dilute because the burn is real. And it's painful!! My arm was on fire. I was in labor for a really long time and had to have a few doses so they diluted them going forward and it was much better after that.

      @Molly Dolly from my experience, yes. I had the IV the entire time. I got multiple doses because I was in labor for a long time. This is all really good information. Thank you. I was blessed with a really quick labor even though it was my first, so I didn’t get all the doses of antibiotics I needed, but my water didn’t break until right before I pushed him out, so that was a good sign. As a precaution, he was in the NICU on antibiotics for a time. In Taiwan, it is standard practice for a 3 day hospital stay after vaginal delivery and 5 days for a c-section delivery. He was okay and never developed an infection.

    I have Group B strep and group A Strep septicaemia 24/7. I've had this for years and it flares up now and then to show symptoms. Otherwise it just lies dormant. My blood work always shows a positive test but I'm non responsive to antibiotics so we avoid treating me unless it's severe. I tend to have a 150 count in my blood at any time. So i know pre-emptively I'll be hospitalised and probably kept in hospital for a little longer.

    My fiancé wasn’t expected to make it after he was born because his mother ended up being group b positive but was never tested for it. He got very sick, and from what his dad has told me, his lungs collapsed and he was on all sorts of life support machines in the hospital for the first few months of his life. Pretty much worst case scenario. So safe to say as much as I’m not looking forward to the process of getting tested for it- I’m eager to have it done to look out for our baby girl, because her dad still has scars from having tubes and everything as as a newborn.

    Sorry if you commented on this and I missed it! But what happens if you suddenly go into labor prior to 35 weeks and you haven't had the swab yet? Will they just keep an eye on your baby to see if there are any symptoms of an infection?
    Second question is - if I'm understanding correctly the initial urine test might show if there is GBS in your urine. If its positive then there's no need for a swab later on in the pregnancy. But if it's negative, is it still recommended to have the swab done just to be sure??

  • @glovalova
    @glovalova 4 роки тому +1

    Thanks so much for this! I have two questions: 1) does your hospital have a protocol for the maximum number of doses a GBS positive patient is to receive? I’ve receive a few patients who’ve received 12-16 doses of ampicillin, and then of course they have diarrhea and other symptoms from the overload of antibiotics.
    2) I had an intense vomiting reaction to amoxicillin as a child and haven’t had penicillins since then. I know I can safely take cephalosporins, but i was wondering if it would be worth it to take the ampicillin if I’m GBS positive, since it’s bypassing the GI tract.

    • @Nurse_zabe
      @Nurse_zabe  4 роки тому

      1) we do not, although with inductions if things are seeming lengthly, we will not start antibiotics until contractions actually start. Saves a few doses.
      2) definitely something to chat with your OB about. For non-anaphylactic allergic reactions, cefazolin is the go-to, but nausea and vomiting are technically not allergic reactions. So you’d probably be fine with a penicillin!

      It can’t be treated before labor. So there is nothing you can do aside from pumping your body full of antibiotics during labor which kills all good bacteria in the vagina too, and thus makes it more likely for baby to catch those antibiotic-resistant hospital bacteria. Really, it’s a devils compromise. I wouldn’t do the IV antibiotics, unless the baby is more than 2 weeks pre-term. Those babies don’t have a good immune response yet to deal fight bacteria. Keep in mind that GBS doesn’t make the mom sick either! It can only makes weak or pre-term babies sick, as well as very elderly people.

    Can you talk about the research behind the effects of taking antibiotics during labor --specifically for the baby. I had 3 rounds of antibiotics with my first child (for GBS) and he subsequently developed eczema, allergies, and food sensitivities. Although I don't think the antibiotics were 100% responsible, from my reading it seems like there is a link between antibiotic usage and eczema/allergies/asthma/etc. How can we manage the use of antibiotics in labor? For example, is it necessary to get the antibiotics preemptively? Is it possible to wait until your water breaks and then assess whether antibiotics are necessary (e.g. given where you are in the labor process)? Is there any literature on the time between water breaking and deliver and the chances of the baby contracting an infection. Thanks!

      I totally hear your concern! One thing we do is wait to start antibiotics on patients once active labor is established with inductions at my facility. The other thing that there is some research Behind is that a high-quality probiotic given afterbirth can help repopulate the gut. Evivo is the one we used and it helped with a lot of my baby’s GI symptoms.

    Do you have a session about GD? Just wondering what happens after giving birth.

    • @ThatOneGeekyFamilytoo
      @ThatOneGeekyFamilytoo 4 роки тому +2

      GD is cause by the placenta putting off too much of a hormone that causes your cells to be resistant to insulin. Once the placenta is out, the hormone is no longer being produced and going into your system. However it does take a bit of time to leave your system. I've had GD with ALL three of my pregnancies and got to wear a continuous glucose monitor this time (Dexcom G6)! It is something that you wear 24/7 that has a sensor under your skin and sends your phone glucose readings every 5 minutes without finger pricks. What I noticed was that it took about 3 days for my body to regulate and my cells to stop being insulin resistant. It was right before christmas so there were LOTS of goodies and I was basically eating cakes, cookies, and candies all day. Nothing after three days did really anything to get my sugars up... except McDonalds. That made it skyrocket a week after birth. And I just had a sandwich and BARELY any fries. By the time my CGM sensor expired (10 days pp), I was completely normal and had levels exactly what any normal person would have.
      I'm assuming everyone's body is different, but the principle holds the same. If you have GD and didn't develop type 2, as soon as the hormone leaves your system (for me diet and exercise controlled, it was 3 days) your cells insulin absorption is back to normal.
