Love your tutorials! Your choice of words, the sound of your voice, excellent. One has to understand things to be able to teach. You surely mastered it. A big thanks to you for giving us these free tutorials.
Brilliant tutorial. You really need to contact Bluprint to do a class on pattern making in illustrator. You could expand on your UA-cam offerings there in a paid platform. I ordered a pattern lab bodice block and am excited to see your expanded sloper offerings in the future. Have you tried the offset path tool as an alternative method for adding seam allowances? If so it would be great to see a video about when you would use one technique versus the other. Thanks for sharing. Sandy
Thank you! I'll take a look, but we try to keep all of our tutorials completely free. We've also created the alternative seam allowance tutorial. Check out our digital pattern making playlist.
If you use the Divide tool under the Pathfinder menu, you can save a lot of time on splitting your larger object into small pieces, without needing to keep copying and pasting lines and joining them to make solid pieces.
Wow. I just tried that. Maybe it is an upgrade since this video was produced. I really like it a lot. Now I want Adobe to fix the need to measure along a curve without having to buy VectorScribe.
@@PatternLabLondon That makes sense. This was the only one of your tutorials I'd seen at the time because a seamstress friend had shown it to me, and when I told her about the divide tool, she insisted I mention it here, just in case.
Also you can use the line tool to draw a line from outside the pattern to the bust point and then select both pattern outline and the line you drew and then pathfinder divide. You just have to make sure you use the small selection tool to move the end of the line segment to the center of the bust point. I use the ellipse tool for bust point so that I can always see the exact center.
This course is more of an illustrator tutorial rather than a pattern making tutorial. Im having to skip through it as I am already savvy with the program. Will you be doing a course on the actual process of patterning a PDF pattern ?
You're absolutely right. Thi course is designed for both beginners in pattern drafting and Adobe Illustrator. We do have other digital pattern making tutorials that are slightly more advanced. Learned some new techniques so thank you for sharing. Did you know if you clicked ‘paste in place’ your lines will appear on top of the original. Saves you having to move the new copied line back to the original location of the line you just copied.
@@PatternLabLondon Actually it is best to do a Paste in Front (Ctrl F) when you copy and want it perfectly on top. Another thing to try is to use the Shape Builder tool to easily divide up the panels.
When you want to paste an object on the same location of the original object, try pressing “Ctl(Command) + C” and then “Ctl (command) + F (means “front”)”.
These tutorials are great! I was just a bit confused about one part. At 20:28 when you rotated the bottom back piece, would it be good to have already snipped the grain line and grouped it so it would rotate with the whole piece, ensuring that it is at the correct angle in the end? I rewatched several times and I believe you got it angled back correctly, however I was not 100% sure....
You could certainly do that. There are a number of ways to amend patterns in Adobe Illustrator. My way is not always the easiest for everyone. I would say find a method that works for you and stick with it. Experiment! Good luck with your project!
Hi Alexander. Unfortunately, we do not keep written notes on our tutorials, but thank you for the suggestion. We will see what we can do for future tutorials!
Hi Dulce, I don't claim to be an expert on Adobe and everyone has their own way of doing things. This is the technique that I know but if you have something that is far quicker then I'd love to hear more! Always interested in learning new techniques and sharing. Thanks for your comment!
Love your tutorials! Exactly what I was looking for and the way you tell the story is captivating :) a quick question: is there a way to bring in a PDF pattern that I own and edit it accordingly?
You should be able to. As long as it is editable. Also, depending on how the PDF was generated it might open with clipping masks applied to it. This can hide a lot of the pattern, especially if it was saved as a multi-page PDF. Google clipping mask and release the pattern. Or… select the whole pattern, right click and press release clipping mask. You might have to do this a few times as individual elements might have their own clipping mask. Good luck!
I've been following along with this on AI but my lower block disappears when I click the Minus Front, even after arranging the upper block to the front. What am I missing here?
That's great that you resolved it! That's the best way to learn. Just experiment and see what happens The more tools you explore the more proficient you'll be. I'm sorry I didn't get to this question in time!
Cant open either bodice block or cutting room in adobe illustrator... anyone have any clue what i should do at this point? Yes, it is the cloud illustrator, so its up to date. It did upload last time, but now says the file is in an unrecognisable format... Any suggestions would be much appreciated😊

I think this was a tool that I didn't know at that point, but it';s something that I now use regularly and appears in our newer tutorials.

I'm curious if there's a reason that you use the scissor tool instead of just using divide in the Pathfinder
I've never used that tool, but it sounds far more accurate. Can you explain the proess? It will help both me and other users!

By “grading” the pattern in this tutorial, do you mean creating scaled sizes?
I like using the shapebuilder tool. It doesn't cut up the original shape. I have learned not to cut up the basic shape.
Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a shot.
What is the shape builder too and how do you use it?
Is there a written set of directions for this tutorial somewhere?
Hi Alexander. Unfortunately, we do not keep written notes on our tutorials, but thank you for the suggestion. We will see what we can do for future tutorials!
How do you cut and rotate a block that has Princess seams?
You would need to rejoin the two princess panels and re-draw the darts to create a basic block that can then be manipulated. Hopefully that helps?
I usually use the pathfinder divid tool to separarte an object I use with a simple line stroke. Why the extra expand step?

@@PatternLabLondon Thank you for very much! gold tips!!!! Do you also have mens basic bodice block available on the website that I can purchase?
I couldn't use the minus front to cut, it kept moving the whole block together please help
Possibly your pattern pieces are grouped? go to: Object> ungroup. Then retry the process.
I've been following along with this on AI but my lower block disappears when I click the Minus Front, even after arranging the upper block to the front. What am I missing here?
I think I got it. I needed to open up the layers panel and click the eyeballs to make all the layers visible.

Oh god, that is really long-winded just divide.
You're absolutely right! This tutorial is quite old. We've updated this concept in recent independent tutorials with the path finder divide tool.
