As someone who has worked in coral restoration, I find these 3D printed reefs somewhat disappointing by the pictures. It seems these structures simply get covered in microalgae that research has shown can inhibit stony coral colonization/growth. One interesting approach would be finding a way to seed these structures with coralline algae as it seems to have an opposite effect on early stony coral development.

I have to agree. I researched the endolithic algae that live inside coral skeletons (not the zooxanthellae which live inside the coral cells, but things like osteriobium), so this isn't exactly the sub-niche I studied, but I did go to coral reef confrences and heard talks and worked with people who worked on coral restoration and climate change. The pictures look like the descriptions of the worst case of climate change scenarios of coral death where the reefs get taken over by algae.
I think what might eventually be neccasary is gene editing coral to survive, similar to what is being trialed on the American chesnut. But it would be so much more difficult because there are so many species.

I have a bit more confidence in three dimensional planting operations for kelp and bivalves. The latter filter the water column, and thus enable to photosynthesizers to function at greater depths. The kelp provide habitat for small organisms, usually of the invertebrate variety, which in turn provide nitrogenous detritus for the filter feeders. The farms can even be constructed off of the continental shelves, such as in deep water. Any structure which raises the coral binding substrate to 30m depth is viable for colonization. Otherwise, nature is running a large experiment in selecting corals for temperature and pH tolerance.

My immediate thought is that; we should try to encourage the growth of coral reefs in new environments that reefs currently do not occupy, but can be occupied as our environment changes.
I do see this mindset seriously riling up conservatives, but the reality is that; climate change is inevitable, and the best we can do is to encourage ecosystems to move further away from the equator by providing them with infrastructure, or else we will loose them forever.
Do I see 3D printed reefs becoming the future? Yes, but only if we can get enough support behind them to become as such.

This is now my new favorite BC vlog. I was impressed with the successes and will now be watching for future developments in this space. My grandson did a research project on declining coral reefs specific to plastic dumping effects. I shared this with him since he became intensely concerned about coral reef decline. I’m hoping he pursues a career in marine biology. He also did a research project on whale evolution. Both presentations on these topics were really well done and far beyond his age group norm. i think 3d printing concrete is more of a gimmick trying to use all of the tech/ocean conservation buzzwords all at the same time. seems incredibly expensive and time-consuming for what it does, not to mention the environmental impact of making concrete with no other previous use. the piers and breakwaters where I live look more lively than these, and they are just tubes and boulders.
probably easier and work just as well to just blast straight boulders and stack them up, a lot more bang for the buck. don't need to be bolted down and use expensive large stainless steel fastening. get enough of them together and you got all the crevises you want.
for those who don't know a "breakwater" is where they just build a massive T shape out into the sea to stop waves reduce sand erosion and create the right wave conditions for surfing(same name for the structures at the entrances of harbors). but they have become sanctuaries for local stingrays and fish. so like shuffle your feet if you are swimming near one so you don't accidentally step on one.

Have a look at the perforated concrete pyramid shapes that are being used off the SW coast of Western Australia. They are meant to encourage Abalone but they get colonised by other marine life.
Also around Sydney small terracotta pots have been attached to the many human made sea walls which replaced the natural shoreline of Sydney's multiple harbours.
There are many steps we can take small and large to assist nature. The best would be to save, restore and replant seagrasses and mangroves and to work with nature not treat it as the enemy or a way to make a fast buck.

Wasn't aware that coral reefs were under any particular threat. We heard such nonsense back in the 80s and 90s and the fear mongering about how it would take millions of years for reefs to recover from who knows what. The navy sank a few decommissioned ships off shore and a decade later, reefs were doing better than ever. The one thing that has come clear in all of it is that credentials aren't worth much.

What gets my brain turning with this is that I recently learned about another technology for building large concrete structures underwater. It had a really goofy name but it was brilliant. They anchor a large steel cable and run electricity through it. This anodizes the cable with minerals from the water. Next thing you know you have a solid stone pillar that's completely natural. If instead we dropped steel netting I wonder if we could build large stone structures super easily.

This could be a useful approach to accelerate reef development in areas that suit human activities (e.g. to enrich a fishery) - but I think it's hubris to assume we can do a better job of establishing reefs, than the organisms that have been building them for hundreds of millions of years. During the seasonal spawning events, corals release billions of propagules _en masse,_ and ocean currents can carry them many hundreds of kilometres before they settle on a substrate. Our efforts at establishing new reefs look pretty puny by comparison.

The simple answer is no because the reason why coral reefs are dying isn't because of lack of surface area but adverse changing environmental conditions. If anything, these new forms will make things worse because they will reduce the flow of the ocean currents which the coral needs to survive as those corals need the current to bring in food, oxygen and carry out deoxygenated water, waste and fertilized eggs. And the creatures which these objects most benefit are algae which reduce the ability of the corals to latch onto the structures and survive anyways.
The whole 3d printing nonsense is a gimmick. A money hole that isn't really as useful as claimed and far more costly than people think compared to alternative methods. Frankly trying to throw out 3d printing as the solution to every problem even if that problem cannot be resolved by 3d printing is turning 3d printing into the new hammer where every problem looks like a nail if 3d printer is the new hammer buzzword.

Some misinformation in this video. Climate change has zero effect on coral reefs. First off ocean waters don't get "acidic", as far as PH goes most if not all organisms adapt to the changes, sea water is also great at neutralizing Co2's. Warm weather does not bleach corals,, reactive nitrogen from sources like improperly treated sewage, and fertilizers do. Coral reefs were dying off long before they were impacted by rising water temperatures. Elevated nitrogen levels cause phosphorus starvation in corals, reducing their temperature threshold for bleaching. For instance in the

It was stated by the presenter (scientist/biologist) that the Great Barrier Reef has in fact repaired it self very recently. Unfortunately I don't have the link and I don't remember his name:)

Why do you need to 3d print coral? Just seed the reef and let nature do its thing. We've got to stop trying to engineer our way out of every problem. It was our attempts at engineering our world to suit us that caused the problems in the first place.

Compensatory growth after a massive bleaching event is not cause for celebration when metabolic exhaustion and stress from rapid growth leave those same corals more vulnerable to increasingly common extreme temperature events.

@@jinmushui1souli remember watching the saturday show on tv in queensland showing video of divers, on the baron blenched white coral and saying it was because of a foriegn invader, the crown of thorns starfish. both claims were wrong. The gbr has had bleaching events, massive and localized events for thousands of years that we know of. these are linked to el nino/nina events and localized events involving tidal and brief heat events (which also have occurred for millennia). coral, in the broad, is formed by individual creatures.once they die that's it. new creatures come and form the next coral structure. there is no "exhaustion or stress'. they are not on shift work or pulling a wage. they don';t have a union? these types of terms try and create a human relationship/cause to unrelated events. also what is your metric for "increasingly common" extreme temperature events? the reef is about 8k years old as it developed since the last ice age. we have only had the capability for 40-50 years to monitor (not saying we even did) the reef via satellite since the reef is mostly between 10-100 kms off shore.

It may be possible to preserve some coral species with a method like this, even in a more acidic ocean, whilst the calcium carbonate skeletons may dissolve away as the ocean acidifies the polyps themselves fundamentally only need a solid structure to attach to to survive, if we can preserve the polyps in the surfaces of artificial structures like this we may be able to help the polyps themselves and thereby the coral species survive until the ocean becomes less acidic again one day
