@@Teacher-Val Now I am teaching in Haikou. I’m incredibly burned out and just limping through the days until summer vacation. Life isn’t easy. Your video helped me identify some problems- I probably need to find a school with more support. Chinese work culture is also challenging.

@@brianmcdowell6066 I am sorry you are having it rough in Haikou. How many classes do you teach a day? What grades? Do you have any friends to hang out with? Do you have any plans for this summer? I think you need to get out of the country and travel a bit. It has been five years for me since the last time I left China. I am going home for a couple of weeks this summer to recharge and rejuvenate. I suggest you do something similar. Hang in there just a little longer. The term is coming to an end and very soon you will have your well-deserved rest!

Very well presented ! Thank you guys. I'm an ESL teacher in Korea. Burnout here is devastating. My father was an elementary school teacher for over 45 years . He only teach 3 or 4 hours per day, had 3 months summer vacation, 2 weeks winter vacation and 1 week spring vacation. I told him that in Korea you get only 10 vacation days per year, he replied: they're animals! ..Teachers work is different than office work or other works. It's inhumane to work 8 hours daily as a teacher. But here in Korea they copied American schooling system instead of European. Huge difference! I can't take no more ! Thanks for this, I find myself in everything you have described here.

Hi Cristinel! Thank you for your comment. I completely agree with you. Teaching can be incredibly draining, and it's heartbreaking how often teachers are overworked and underappreciated. The fact that teachers of all people who shape the future are often paid less than office workers is a serious injustice. Ten vacation days per year is absolutely outrageous! No way!!! Here in China, we're fortunate to have longer breaks - 2 months in the summer, over 3 weeks in winter for the Spring Festival, a week in October for the National Day, and 5 days in May for Labor Day. I hope you're able to reflect on the bigger picture and prioritize your well-being because there's definitely more to life than just work. Take care of yourself!
I made one more video on the topic. If you're interested, please watch it. You may find something we didn't cover in this video. Hugs!!!

Thanks for this, really. I am a new teacher and its true we have to go through a lot of demo and it is indeed frustrating. It feels like we can't vent out frustrations because we are just new and feels like I just need to endure it. Thank you for validating what I feel!!!

Glad it was helpful! Teachers do a lot of demos - it's the nature of our job. Demos are a stressful experience for new teachers. However, you have the right to vent and say how you feel. You can do it here. I'll listen.

very nice video guys - I had exactly the same symptoms of burnout - I couldn't sleep properly, new ideas didn't come-I was just starring at my monitor, I was sleepy and tired during the day, every lesson I had to teach became a hassle for me. I switched to the full time IT job, started meeting more people in my free time and do sport. Now I teach only 2 or 3 lessons a week in the afternoons - and I enjoy teaching again :-)

Thank you Teacher Val! I totally agree with what you said. I've been experiencing these symptoms for years, but I still continue teaching and put my all into it. I just finished my observation class last week. I teach visual art bilingually, and there were a principal and teachers present in my class. I was really stressed out, and in the days leading up to the observation class, I couldn't sleep well. Every teacher has an observation class every semester, but as a bilingual teacher, I have more observation classes. It was a demanding experience. Although I know being bilingual is beneficial for Taiwan's young generation, there is insufficient support for bilingual teachers.

Hi Sandy! It's natural to feel stressed during demos. Remember, your passion and expertise are what make you a great teacher, and you're more than capable of handling these moments. Take a deep breath, focus on your students, do not look at the people who came to observe you and, above all, trust yourself - you've got this!
I have done so many demos that I don't worry about them anymore. I welcome them, and if there is one at my school, I volunteer so I can show my teachers that demos are nothing to be afraid of!

We sometimes forget about themselves and so this burnout appears slowly and dramatically...We really need some rest and there isn't anything strange in it,we are also ordinary ppl,we need time for ourselves

Hi Chloe! Where are you from? If you'd like to tell me more, I'm here to listen. Take one thing at a time, and don't forget to breathe. Life is a series of experiences or lessons. These experiences are neutral. They have no meaning. It's we who attach meaning to our experiences. It all depends on how you interpret what is happening to you. You may see it as a punishment or misfortune, or you may see it as a sign to try something different. Stay strong, believe in yourself, and remember: you will be okay! 🌹
