Thanks for the video. Before taking anything apart, take a lot of photos of the wiring routing. I also zip-tied the harness at each location there was a cable clamp so I could lay out the new harness next to the old one and get the routing sorted out.
Super great video I have work with cars for 55 yrs start the build on my 1973 challenger body great put in new quarter and roof be leading all joints from the old school the place to buy parts is a big big help Thanks Ray
Glad I can help!
Great info. Enjoy the video. It’s gonna be a great resource when I go to assemble the dash in my 70. In 10 years once I’m done with all the fabrications and finally ready to assemble the car.
Thanks! I'll be doing the reassembly video in the coming weeks. My new Dakota Digital RTX gauges are on a FedEx truck currently! I'm enjoying watching your Challenger videos! It's great that you're saving it!
@@LifeatSpeed thanks!!!! It’s a huge project but I’ve done worse. Lol.
@@MyKARSShop LOL! you sound like me
Thanks for the great tutorial and also for letting me know about The Mopar Shop.
That dash looks great before disassembly
Thanks, it wasn't too bad overall. Paint on thr frame had some scratches, the pad had one of those inexpensive caps on it and the gauge faces were dull.
Hey, just found this video. Great job! I need to sort out a broken needle in the speedo of my '72 Challenger rallye. Can I get the speedo out, or get the instrument cluster out, without taking the whole dash out? If so, how do I go about doing that? Thanks.
You absolutely can remove the instrument clusterwithout the entire dash! You'll need to remove the instrument cluster light bar, then the instrument cluster bezel and switch panel to the left of the gauges (you might need to lower the steering column for extra clearance), and then you can remove the instrument cluster. It might be possible to remove the speedometer by itself, but it would be tricky to access the mounting screws on the back if memory serves me.
Do you have to remove the dash to just change the Guage cluster?
No. I did because I was replacing the pad and repainting the frame. The cluster can be removed with the dash still in the car.
@@LifeatSpeed thanks
Thanks for the video! This was especially helpful, because I'm considering upgrading the gauges from the standard cluster to the R/T to match my car. I just can't seem to decide to go with original, restored gauges. or with the new one from Dakota Digital. I've never done that swap, so hopefully, it will make sense to me where all the wiring goes. However, there's got to be extra wiring needed because the R/T gauges have the Tic Toc Tach, which my car does not have, so that'll be fun to figure out, I'm sure!
My pleasure! The swap is pretty straight forward. If you habe any questions feel free to ask
I did this once 30 years ago if I remember right u have to remove the windshield to get to the little 4 screws that hold up .I removed mine in my Cuda
You do not have to remove the windshield to access those screws.
@@LifeatSpeedthat’s a fact. Did this in a junk yard over 40 years ago. Man it was hot and humid. But I got it out and no windshield removal. 😂
You do not have to remove the windshield on either the cuda or challenger. I've done multiple of both with no issues
@@LifeatSpeed I agreed with you.
Sorry it showed up weird on my phone and your first comment didn't show up. It showed the other comment as new even though turns out I already replied to it, and now your original comment has shown up as well
I'm trying to get a inst. cluster out too but most screw are missing Can you tell me where I can get replacement screws for the inst. cluster and panel and what size they are? It seems that none of the year one type business are of any help.
I would recommend reaching out to R/T Specialties. They specialize in fasteners for these cars.
Thanks for the detailed info. I need to replace my speedometer cable. Unfortunately when it broke, it snapped the needle in half behind the lens. I was hoping to see you disassembling that part too when you upgraded your gauges. At least, that's what I think you hinted to. I don't see an updated video posted yet. Subscribed.
Unfortunately I am still waiting for the upgraded gauges to arrive. They were supposed to be here last month, but production delays have resulted in me not receiving them yet. As for your situation; I'll post a video on that today
@@LifeatSpeed Thank you. I am new to the car and this just happened Day 2 or ownership. I purchased a new speedometer cable. But, it sounds like it's actually the limit spring that snapped and took out the needle in the process. I will probably replace both since I need a trip reset pole as well. Gotta love old cars!!!
@@PatrickMichael2002 You're welcome and congrats on getting into the E-body world! What are the specifics on your car? The video on getting to the speedometer goes live in just over a half hour from now. The only I don't cover is the removal of the speedometer as a whole from the cluster, but it's really easy once you get to where the video leaves off, just pull the screws from the backside near where the speedometer is and it comes right out.

@@PatrickMichael2002 I just watched it! Very cool! That is a great Challenger from what I can see. I had one similar that unfortunately I sold before I finished it. Same Plum Crazy with white interior, but mine was a 340 and a 4 speed.
At the 8:20 mark you started taking the screws out of what you called the light bar. Is that what is is officially called ? I need to replace the missing one in my 70 Cuda. Thanks !
That's the only name I know it by.
Swapping in the original as a core, how did you handle the VIN number riveted to the metal frame. Enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting & Best Regards - Mike
I removed the VIN tag from the original pad and installed it on the new pad with new correct rivots
Thanks - Mike
Best place to buy complete wiring harm dash front and rear the picture is my 2008 challenger 1061hp at rear wheels made one pass 8.80@160 with spray and e85 1/4 miles kick me off track no cage.
That's a serious beast of a Challenger you have!
Thank you for this I’m about to tackle this on my 70 challenger soon. Is the frame different between a rally instrument cluster and non rally? I was thinking about switching them or just stick with the Dakota digital gauges, depending on several factors money being one of them. Thanks
My pleasure! The frames are the same regardless of cluster
@@LifeatSpeed thanks
Thank you so much me and my mom want to do this she has a new one I’m just there so she doesn’t hurt her self and we are going to make a beautiful car
My pleasure!
It is a 1972 barracuda and I wish I could show u a pic of the dash cause you can probably help out
That's a great car! You can email me at mopar72hemi@hotmail.com
Ok next time let’s see the dash removal in action. Lol. I like the video and gave a fellow Mopar guy a subscribe. By the what what are you doing with the old dash harness? I could use something like that if you want to part with it.
Next time definitely will! Appreciate the support! Not sure what I'm doing with the old harness yet. FYI it's a standard gauge harness. I added the rallye dash later and adapted accordingly.
