The song is about a situation where he has to deliver a message to a Chola king. The kingdom is on the banks of the river Kaveri that is the main river that to date helps agriculture. The song says he cant wait to meet the river and to see everything in the prosperous kingdom. Ponni is another name for the River Kaveri that flows from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu. Ponniyin selvan literally means the son of Ponni, referring to one of the strongest kings Raja Raja Chola from the Chola dynasty.

The song doesnt sing the praise of the hero. It is in praise of the beauty of the Chola land, through which the Ponni river flows. The hero hails from another land and gets his first glimpse of this famous kingdom, that too duing the festive day of "Aadi Perukku" (Coincidentally, Aadi Perukku in 2022 is tomorrow ! ). The song also speaks about his journey, and the relationship he shares with his horse.
Ponni river is called Kaveri / Cauvery in the modern day. The movie is titled "Ponniyin Selvan", or Ponni's son, which refers to another pivotal character in this film.
You have to admit it is a good guess on Rick's part, because so many Hero Intro songs do that.

Ponni nadhi is the Cauvery River… to sum up- the song is that of the delta land thru which Cauvery passes by, ruled by the Chola dynasty.
Sangam culture is nature centered consciousness where the river is sumbol of life and civilization. During this time of every year, the river swells due to the monsoon rains in the Western ghats… and the delta land being rich agricultural fields for paddy- it is a big festive event- called aadi peruku- which is the also opening scene of the hero in the book. Thats what makes this song so important… for this movie.😊🙌🏾
The song is about the hero singing this song to his horse semban. They have to make huge journey to gether to deliver a scroll. So he sings this song through the journey, cheering up himself and the horse. He says that they have to go see the ponni river before dusk and how beautiful it is going to be.

as usual its masterpiece. generally who dont like a r rahman music at first they get addicted slowly ( even indians). most of a r rahman songs would be fresh n futuristic so suddenly it feels not connected but later on get addicted. before songs of a r rahman be it 1990's or 2000's still we enjoy, cherish n always think how he has done those songs at that time which feels new even today.

The reason why raja raja chozhan is called son of Ponni , because he felt in to the Ponni river as a child while on a boat with his father. The interpretation goes like some one all of a sudden from the river is handing over the chilld to his king the father. It is described the goddess ponni itself came as human and saved the child and hence he is called son of Ponni. I don’t how much of it is fiction but the way Kalki describes is always amazing 🔥🔥🔥

This is the first scene in the first chapter of the 5 volume epic novel. And the author describes the rich Chozha land through Vanthiathevan's eyes. It is so green in my memory after reading it umpteen times that everytime we go to the river Bank on that particular day of aadiperukku my siblings and I talk about this scene in the book.
This is not a song prasing the hero. But in fact a song sung from that character's (shown in video)perspective. He basically talks about the chola land which he is visiting for the first time. He also talks about the girls there (yeah! He is a playboy). And also about his love for his horse called Semban

History would not have known about raja raja chozhan , had Aditya karikala chozhan had kept his nerves and refrained from killing the pandiya king by cutting his head while he is still being attended for the wounds. This act lead to the killing of Adithya Karikalan through a conspiracy where the conspirators killed him by cutting his head when he is caught off guard in the dark. This paved a way for us to experience Kalki’s ponniyin selvan

It's abt the landscape and the culture of the land from ancient time. The guy u saw is Karthy- kaidhi hero! There is no one hero in this story ,many heros 2or3 villainous characters.
I have read this Ponni's Selvan story completely and while reading I got some imaginative patterns in this story and more than that he designed this trailer.

Ponniyin Selvan means son of the river Ponni that is cauvery river. This river flows through the delta regions of present day Tanjore also called as rice bowl of TN. And king built a lake where the excess water flows into this huge lake called Veera Narayana lake. Now known as veeraanam lake. He describes the lake as big as sea. You can imagine the rest.
I love how the string refrain can be Indian....but also could be Celtic...and also could be Central Asian Silk Road music. in not being too specifically Indian, or too any one culture, it acquires an archetypal timeless quality that is perfect for epic stories, which in the end are about archetypes. it is also apt for a story that depicts a time long past, before India became the India we are familiar with today. it's logical that the music would not necessarily sound like what we'd expect of Indian music today.
