This song was rage and still is...one of the best songs from Ilaiyaraja...
This song is also based on carnatic ragam named "Mohanam", Ilayaraaja's songs are immortal because almost all of his songs are strongly carnatic Raaga based. Mohanam is a raga for love & lust. It is also national Raagam of China.
Ilayaraaja is a genius in composing songs based on Raaga's which brings in the essence of emotions needed for that song based on situation in films. that is the reason why Ilayaraaja was known as "Raaga Devan" meaning God of Raagas!
"Ninnukkori Varnam" is the term basically known as skeleton of a Raaga. Carnatic Raagams are simply understood as grammar to music.

Since Ilayaraja composed many songs in Mohana raagam, he was called Mohanaraja by old actress Banumathi.

Ninnu kori is actually a famous carnatic composition. Beautifully integrated in to the lyrics. Search ninnukori varnam by any of the legendary classical singers.

Interesting fact: Ninnu kori varnam is an old telugu Carnatic composition. Only that bit is in telugu and remaining lyrics are in tamil here.

@@motherearth5229 links might get deleted if I attach it here but there is an old telugu varnam called ninnu kori. It's a varnam in same Mohana ragam. This one is like an adaptation of that old one. You can search it up. Even AR Rahman used that Ninnu kori bit in Rasaali song in Achcham yenbadhu madamaiyada.
"Ninnu kori varnam" these are the only words used in this song,but Tune is totally different. So without knowledge don't comment.

Remember it was 1988. The instruments may seem cheap and clinking but it is very refreshing back in those days and it still is for many of us because of the nostalgia and also the crap we get to hear these days.
