So... you need be making $80,000/year to afford a small, plain studio in NYC, and $280,000/year for a large 2 bedroom, 2 bath. In my part of the US, if those were the prices here, most of our teachers, police officers, firefighters, highway workers, store clerks, servers, etc. would be living in tents. Rents in NYC are just unreal.
NYC is one of the playgrounds for the rich. Lot's of millionaires and billionaires (1/2 of which don't even live in New York year round) have driven the real estate up to crazy prices over the past couple decades. And there's a crazy amount of demand to live in NYC.
My husband is a teacher. We live in SC and just bought a house last year. It’s not a huge house but we have a nice yard and we own it. Our mortgage is cheaper than the studio apartment.
The people you mention, teachers, police officers, firefighters, highway workers, store clerks, servers, do not live in the areas that Cash features. They live in areas with a much longer commute, or a lucky enough to "inherit" a rent controlled place from a dead relative. The New York Times once again has a Sunday jobs classified section. Four pages of tiny print. Most of the jobs are well over $100K, but require college, MBAs or several years programming experience. I saw one for a programmer that paid $250K+ for 3 years experience. Stay in school if you can.
I've lived here for 20 years. Prices are absurd, and it's not because space is at capacity. Many luxury apartments sit empty. The problem is with greedy landlords and investment companies that are so rich they can sit on property for years. Then they cry poor and get a bailout.
So good to see The Tag Team back again. Mr. Monroe in the house. Miss these two racing down the street on their bikes and showing some great places to live.
GREAT to see Charles again!!! Okay... ya know... I think I could actually work with that $2k/month studio! It's all about buying the correct furniture. A convertible couch/bed futon, a 2-chair dining set, an ottoman that can convert to a twin bed, and just maybe a small desk & chair for a home office would fit too. One would have to think of a "Junior suite" hotel room. I also liked the second offering by Charles--the 2-bed/2-bath, BUT not at $7K/month, which is probably market rate. If it was $5K-$5500/month, then I would REALLY like it. I definitely preferred the $10K/month penthouse more over the $25K/month cavern! The latter was a definite "NO" for me and not because of the furnishings--although I did not like that either. All I could think about as we toured the place was the costs of heating and cooling it. There really wasn't anything redeeming about the place for me.
Cash- SO happy to see Charles back with you. Today, the rhythm was more in sync and fun with him. I also thought Isabella and her friends were sweet. The 25k palace looked just like a spoiled kid lived there too. I thought it had great outdoor space but the rest felt like a cave. Way too dark and moody for my taste. Thanks for sharing the available and very different range of pricing of NY apartments. Keep going!☮️👏👏👏👏
Yay! I love a Cash and Charles show!!!!!! Here's the thing tho'. For $20, 000 a month...you could get yourself a beautiful lakefront or oceanfront estate, historic (or modern) mansion with several waterfront acres and a boat dock, or a HUGE horse and cattle ranch. Is living in NYC, especially now, really worth it??? 😰
NYC isn’t sinking, as all New Yorkers brag about, it’s built on bedrock. The ocean is rising and causing the flooding. New York is once again only for the rich and the very poor. Middle class is once again is being squeezed out. This type of imbalance causes inner cities to collapse. My hometown is once again a mess. Sigh 😔
The truth of the matter is, none of these is a good value. If I only had $2K for renting, I go somewhere else. If I could splurge $25K a month, I buy a place. This explains why these places are empty.
Suburb of Phoenix.....the last 2 bd, 2 ba I rented was 844 sq. feet, and $650 per month. This was from 2012 to 2015. When I moved out, they put in some upscale appliances, and a new floor, and listed it for $1000 per month.
I love the Cash and Charles show That being said, there is not an apartment in NYC worth the asking price. I am thankful every day for my 2 bed 1 bath little house with a 1/3 acre yard for under $700 a month
Say what? Two thousand dollars a month to live in a shoebox. Cash I love how you manage to put a positive spin on everything. @4:06, I like that the kitchen is not part of the living room, but the flat is rather basic for $7,000 per month. @7:22, the landlord really cheaped out on the kitchen. Should have gone to IKEA for something better that will last longer, too. @10:47, how can that legally be a bedroom without a window? The last place has small hotel vibes about it.
Just my bedroom is bigger than that first apartment. For $1,100 I'm living in a 3 bedroom/2bath with an attached garage and an apple tree in front (free apples).
little tip for those looking at the lower end. Always check to see if the "vent" actually has a vent in the upper cabinet. All too often it's just a fan going nowhere.
I thought I’d move there when I turned 18. Boy was I wrong. Not the New Jersey is any better, but I can’t afford the rent here either so I really can’t afford NYC rent.
The Gilded Age of 130 years ago is back. Already there's a huge servant class again, even if a given servant may work for multiple households. Next up after this stage: Have you ever read any Charles Dickens?
It much cheaper to live in Upstate New York just saying. I live in the Capital Region area. But sometimes even around here, it can get expensive if you are not careful. Areas of New York that are cheaper are: Binghamton, Jamestown, Elmira, Corning, and pretty much anything along the southern tier of New York.
Sorry i comment so much.... I just have a thing for real estate... Especially old buildings that get repurposed for modern use but they still keep the original details... Or when old items get re-used in a new creative way....
It probably used to be major firms or record & film studios, so they could put up visiting artists & whatnot. That or people who had enough to simply buy the property. Nowadays I don’t know, since I have no idea who makes that kind of money consistently. Even if I did, I think I’d rather save 4 years of that rent & retire a few years early.

$2,000 for 11 m² is insane! This is considered "affordable"? I lived in NYC briefly 15 years ago, at that time at least I could rent a decent sized bedroom in Washington Heights for $650. I really liked the 2nd place, except for the price. Definitely a "market rate" rent but really more worth $5K. The 3rd at $10K? I wasn't crazy about the angled living room & master bedroom.
