  • Superior Insect Shield // Bottom Entry Hammock Bugnet
This is the fix to the bug issue I had when using the Superior Gear Superior Hammock System. This keeps the bugs out and uses an easy to install, easy to use design.

I have a superior hammock and love it. I wasn't sure about the bug net, since I was used to side zip netting hammocks already. After using it I would say that it is the best bug net system out there. Better than a side zip. With the side zip you are constantly un zipping to adjust your underquilt. Plus it's a little harder to get in and out with zippers, hunting for the zipper pulls at night. Plus I broke a zipper becouse I didn't zip it up far enough when getting in or out. Most side zips dont work very well to sit in. With the fronkey style, the under quilt is locked in by the netting and if you have to adjust the quilt, then it's right there inside the netting with you and easy to grab and adjust. Getting in and out is quick and easy and let's in no bugs. You really dont need to adjust the tension of the shock cord, once you adjust it the first use. I've taken off my side zip nets on my other hammocks and use a fronkey style now. I got another one from Dutch ware that is tighter fitting and much lighter. About 5 oz. The superior hammock one is a little heavier, 9.7 oz., and thicker and dosent pack down as small. Its probably a little tougher though. They are easy to just unhook one side and slide it all the way to one side to sit and lounge in your hammock with out the net. Then slide it over, unhook, slide it over the end and re hook. Simple with less to go wrong. In the summer I'll just leave the net on when I pack the hammock in a stuff sack.

I just ordered my Superior Hammock from Danny and I hadn't researched the bugnet. Danny turned me on to this video and now I feel better. 😀

Nice setup. I like the integrated under quilt. I made a Fronkey style bug net for my homemade hammock several years ago. One improvement I would suggest on the bug net is to move the barrel lock to the side, which would make it much easier to adjust from inside.

Very interesting. I like the concept of the hammock. Living in Florida and camping mainly in Florida I feel a need for a more secure bug net. As with a lot of places we have some nasty critters.

I think this one works pretty well, even for really buggy climates. Sure, it's a little less foolproof than a zippered option. Thanks!

I would love to see a review on the Enlightened Equipment Centurion.

I'm not a very big fan of EE. I think there are much better products out there, like UGQ, HG and Loco Libre.

Hey Mark? I have the newer one with the removable bug net. That seems to squeeze the hammock together. Have you used that one? If so, would you choose to have a separate one like this or the removable built in one? Thank you!

Thanks Mark. I appreciate your videos and honest reviews. I may have missed this, but did you mention it post total weights for that system?

Works and is well constructed. Easy to install and improves ANY netless hammock instantly! Thanks!

I've got a netless Freebird that I could use that on. $60 isn't bad, but maybe I'll look around for DIY instructions.

Maybe I hung it incorrectly, but I tried a net like yours on my friends Eno doublenest and found that it made my diagonal lay more restrictive (granted I’m 6’4” so it wasn’t the right length a hammock to begin with). I recently purchased an XLC on the memorial weekend sale. Wasn’t to sure about an 11 ft vs. 12 ft as well as your review wasn’t the most glowing lol. Hopefully an integrated bugnet is different in that aspect.

Interesting, do you know what brand the net was? Yeah Eno's are not exactly roomy hammocks, they are a bit on the small side. Thanks!

Spiguyver Backpacking It’s the Guardian bugnet. It worked fine, it was just something I noticed. These type of nets are a bit close to one’s face. Not the end of the world, but I like(haven’t received it yet) how the XLC is pulled away.

Will you store the entire setup in a say double ended stuff sack or take the bugnet off each time? I wondered if I could attach it to my tarp ridge line and keep both of them in the same snakeskin?

Yeah, I would store it in a double ended stuff sack, the same one I would use for the hammock. The whole thing will fit in one that's just a little bigger than normal (since it has the quilt on it). I would not suggest putting it on the tarp ridgeline.
