@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Oh, nice. I just wanted to let people know. I didn’t know you did an update. Just got mine today with the dyneema camo tarp. Love it so far.
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 I took the carabiners off because I don’t need them and couldn’t figure out which is the head end. Your video gave me the info I needed. End with the pocket for the net is the foot end. Or end with the little hood. Just made up a different color continuous loop for one end so I can tell when it’s in the bag with the loops hanging out. Nice video btw. Subbed 👍🏻
Great review. Frozen sold me on hammocks and you sold me on this setup. Hammock gear has an order coming in next paycheck and you guys will be mentioned. Hope to see you on the trail some day. Rock out with you're socks out! Me out.
For anyone watching this in the future, they've updated the hammocks since this video came out, adding additional under quilt tie off points, and the stuff sack being integrated into the head/foot, versus on the side. Some other minor improvements to an already fantastic hammock!
I've spent A LOT of money at HG! All my quilts and the Dynema tarp. It looks like this is a great hammock but not as versatile as others and not for me. But then again I don't plan on getting another hammock until I need one. Chameleon is my current which you and others convinced me into getting and I love it. Great review Mark.
Amazon sells glow in the dark zipper pulls by MSR that are nice. How does the lay compare to an asym hammock with pull outs? One more question- how much does your suspension weigh? Is that mule tape? Thanks for the review.
Daniel Helmbrecht I know you can get pulls for it, I was just pointing out that I really feel they should include them both I inside and outside. I haven’t weighed that suspension in a while, it’s 2” Kevlar tree huggers (required in TX) and mike tape. My guess is somewhere around 3 oz. Thanks!
Great review. I love Hammock Gear products. Their quality and customer service is outstanding. I got mine immediately and can’t wait to use it. On inspection I could see I got a lot of bang for the buck
Thanks for the review. It helps a lot with an idea of what that hammock is like. How would you compare this with the DH sparrow or the Chamaeleon hammocks? Have you ever spent any time with the SLD trail lair?
John Ogden for the price it’s a great option. However it is not a custom hammock, it is symmetrical and doesn’t have the features of a Chameleon or Sparrow. I find the HG to be very comfortable. I have spent a few nights in a Trail Lair and did like that one quite a bit as well.
Spiguyver Backpacking I’m not ready for a asymmetrical hammock yet, may never be. I find I lay in the hammock I have differently depending on my surrounding or who is hanging next to me. So the HG, trail Lair, symmetric sparrow or Chamaeleon are the ones I’m looking at in a 1.6 hex material. I have the incubator UQ so I thought I might try their hammock, but if one of the others stands out to be a better lay, I would consider one of theirs. On HF there seems to be a large group who like the comfort of the trail lair over their Chamaeleon, but it doesn’t have as many options. At this point in the game I’m not really using or feel like I need some of these options that are available, but that may change as I continue to Hammock camp. I’m just really looking for advice, I’m. It close to any of the hangs where I can check out the options in person.
John Ogden I would recommend the HG as a great one to start with. If you aren’t concerned with cost, the Chameleon offers more options than anything else out there, or the Sparrow is always a favorite! Both the Chameleon and Sparrow are going to have a much higher price. I was surprised at how comfortable I was in the HG, however there aren’t many options available for it.
Different things. You can use them for pullouts, to spread it apart depending on how you like to lay in it, that keeps some of your stuff from falling out. Also you can use the as connection points for your underquit. Others add pockets or bags on the outside for storage. Whatever you want/need to use them for! Thanks!
I’ve been comparing my options between this and the Chameleon. The one thing that makes me want to swing the extra $ for the chameleon is the option to add a second layer to the hammock body. A lot of my hammock camping experience is from the summer months so I’m curious if mosquitoes can bite through a single layer of the 1.6 meaning I’d want the double layer or treat the hg hammock with permethrin? Thoughts?
Yes, mosquitoes can bite through double layer as well, not as likely, but it can and does happen. I prevent this by treating all of my gear, including my hammock, with permethrin. Thanks!
I camp in Florida or the land of Mosquito's since we have plenty of them. In fact the section I like was called Mosquito County back in the Spanish Land grant days. I have found a couple hammocks which are mosquito proof and I have never been bitten when in them. 1st let me say any single material hammock will let the bugs bite any portion of the body laying against it. One single layer hammock the Clark tropical is mosquito proof and I have never been bitten when in it. The bad news is that they don't make the Tropical anymore. Not sure about the ones they have today but I would assume they are just as good. I'm talking about a hammock that is over 3 pounds in weight. The other i have is the Warbonnet Blackbird double layer ( 70D ) material and I have never been bitten when in it. I use a 3/4 inflated therm-a-rest mummy self inflating air mattress in the hammocks. Hot nights it is over on the side and early morning will slid it under me for a little insulation. Even with a leg or arm against the hammocks material I haven't gotten bitten. Trust me when I say that the mosquitoes have tried.
Thanks for the reply. I may save my $ on the hammock and splurge (using that lightly) on a tarp. I’ll just stick with treating my gear with permethrin to prevent the bug issues and invest the difference in the tarp or other necessities. Thanks again.
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 1 to hold the bug net & one thts about 6inches lower to hang my socks & lite gear..lol maybe it isn't possible...bad idea I guess lol
I think it could be done, the one for the bugnet would be the tighter one, using something like the 83% length, the 2nd one would have to be longer to drop down below that one. Thanks!
Very nice!! I was hoping u would do a review of the HG hammock. I have been a fan of their gear for awhile. Did u use the underquilt hooks? Was wondering how they worked out.
I just got a hg underquilt. Thing is amazing. I was leaning toward a chameleon hammock. But after seeing the quality of hg underquilts, I may have to order their hammock🤔
I don't think you'd be disappointed with either. While the Chameleon does offer a lot of add ons and options after the fact, the HG hammock is just a comfy one that is pretty simple!
For people watching this. It now comes with a double ended stuff sack. All zippers now have pulls with glow in the dark tabs. Carabiners are standard.
Exactly, and if you wanted to see all the updates, I dod an updated video about it!

Excellent package with well thought-out features. It's about time a company put everything together in a package, including the ridgeline.
Most of the cottage vendors include a ridgeline. This is a nice hammock though.

I love the 1.6 material. It has the perfect amount of stretch for me, and that gets rid of any calf ridge. 🤤

Get glow in the dark zipper pulls. Perhaps Home Depot has glow in the dark lamp chain pulls you can use.
Sounds like a good idea! Thanks!

Plus side to any of these, of you don’t like them you can generally sell them lightly used for the majority of what you paid!
Spiguyver Backpacking thanks for the video and the advice, I went for a HG netted when they announced they were back in stock.
Thanks for the review. I'm one of the masses and bought one a couple weeks ago.

Emma Hammond There are a few companies out there that will do that, Dream Hammock will, just email them. Also Simply Light will as well.
May have missed it, but what is the weight compared to a Chameleon and Raven? Also, any way to add a top cover option?
A Taulbee this one is listed at 17.85 oz, mine is right at 18 oz. No top cover option.
