      Absolutely 👍 There's no investment in a rusting home. Just build a simple home with local materials that are bug and weather resistant

      You need to perhaps lay an epoxy floor or bug barrier. More wood will succumb to the jungle.

      Too risky & time consuming to reno the bus; esp. if timber is used…again. Time to build something more solid for the family.

    Agree with most comments here - the bus is a lost cause. You can’t expect that kind of construction to survive the Costa Rican environment… high humidity, heat, torrential rain, ants and termites and all in a rain forrest. Whatever you do, the little buggers will find a way back in to all those hidden spaces, cracks and crevices to nest, feast and multiply.

    Thinking the same as others its time to scrap the bus its going to be a money pit. To build a cover for it and to build around it and then refurb the interior would.cost more and take longer than building a simple bedroom and living space from scratch as part of your home. You may have let Siya's inspiration set too deep and be letting their outcome blur your own ideas without looking at your different situation. Your dad was fab and worked so hard bless him. Maybe donate the bus as a fun classroom.to.the school you're raising money for and some of you residents with renovation experience could make it a project with locals.

    This is disgusting. Don't do a half ass job man please. Strip it down to bare. Weld it shut. Strip it down to metal then zinc chromate it for rust protection then make every SINGLE area water tight. Bring in some good expertise and advice. If you do a half assed job again bro your going to be wasting your money. Check your rubber seals. Every grommit. Treat the bottom of the bus with rust protection. I just can't imagine you doing a proper job on this bus unless you get in the hands you need and the knowledge. Don't forget vapour barriers. Your gonna be spending money but why don't you spend that money on a basic out building rather than doing up the bus. Build a habitable outhouse. Concrete base floor brick it up weather seal it and build a huge deck

    i almost never comment ! but i feel like i have to now . [ please do not put wood into the reconstruction ] you are living in a wood eaters paradise .
    if i were you i would patch the metalwork with fiberglass [ as you do not intend to use this bus to travel with ] replace the floor with cement boarding [ termites will not eat it ]
    any walling you put in use metal stud walling . any wood you put in make sure you treat it with a borax solution and let it soak in well . do not use ply wood ..... termites eat everything in the inside .

It can also be difficult to get insurance for such damage in certain tropical areas. And here he is, du king mountains of live hungry termites onto his own foundation, making sure they will be digging their tunnels underneath and swarm nearby wooden homes. Nice!

    I’ve commented before. I would get rid of the expensive rental in Brighton. A one bed is all you need and not in the most expensive area. Save every penny for CR. Or rent somewhere there and focus entirely on saving to build a base there. Can stay with friends/ family in UK? Idk, lots of things to consider and things we don’t know about as viewers, I’m sure. Love these videos. Wish you the best.

    Oh no! Obviously you’re going to have to rebuild. I’m not an expert but have friends that have built in Costa Rica. Please consider using concrete, metal studs in your construction. Any lumber will be eaten through by termites. It’s not just a coincidence that your wood was wet and was eaten up, it’s that it was plain old wood. You may be able to use native CR hardwood in some areas. Check out Nomadic Movement on YT. Jordan goes into detail on lots of his videos that you can’t use wood in that climate.

  • @Vinny200
    @Vinny200 2 місяці тому +10

    A lot of people against rebuilding the bus judging from the comments XD Aman has some good points. The more and more mites that appeared, the rust damage, it has to definitely be stripped to bare metal, repair +seal . Rust protective paint, has to be the starting point. Literally all from scratch it's a mahoosive job :O Have to say I didn't expect it to be that bad considering you were just laying some flooring haha. Hope it all turns out well, 100% have to go bare and build up from the bottom, need a good foundation first :D

  • @tammydialgray2835
    @tammydialgray2835 2 місяці тому +7

    I’m really sorry you are dealing with such a loss. It makes me think that this experience will shape how you build your house. It’s a wet climate and that destroys wood. You might like seeing Da Jungle Boy and the Nomadic Movement are building in Panama that takes into consideration the climate.

    Try teak wood when you rebuild, you still want to put on something to deter the bugs, but they’re vicious out here.
    We built with wood, put on an anti-mold product mixed with Borax for bug prevention, found several different other products we added to each piece of wood. Tints mixed with borax, several coats of finish, etc.
    good luck with whatever you choose.
    There are several other woods you can use but some are much heavier than others.

    Louis is an extremely kind and inspirational person (the "alright, i'm off now to run up a mountain" was pretty cool there at the end) but it's because of things like this (i.e., the bus situation) that I stopped watching the channel. I know his main message is "just do it" but the part where he doesn't "research it" / "think it through" just wasn't for me anymore. I genuinely hope he takes the advice given in the comments section on this one.

    Such a shame that it was left to fall into such a state of disrepair. The original owners did such a lovely job building that bus, it should have had many years of life left in it. Please do a proper thorough job with this renovation otherwise you’ll be ripping fresh work out again in another year and wasting more resources.

    Don’t use the bus for your permanent home! Live in it temporarily while you build but let it live a different life after. Maybe rent it to others for temporary housing after? Why not make your house one structurally sound strong design? The bus ain’t it!

    Wow this bus must of weighed a few 100 tons. I think you should just send it to the acrap heap

    Just start building your guest house and forget about the bus. It is heartbreaking but, consider you might just be wasting your money when you can invest it in something more permanent and durable.
