I was in class 43 heaven for a while there! But I have to admit never seeing one with buffers fitted like that on 43-123. I will never forget my first trip on the HST, must have been around 1983 from Paddington to Bristol, will never forget just how quiet and smooth it was. I never realised we had started to move until I looked out of the window. Just a totally different experience to the EMU's I was used to living in Surrey. For comfort you really cannot beat a loco hauled train, no noisy traction motors under your coach, just a quiet and relaxing travel experience. If your a 43 fan, Paddington was the place to be back then - standing at the end of the platform listening to those turbos spinning up on the old Paxman Valenta power units, a wonderful sound indeed! Thanks for bring back some great memories.
It's a shame when there's 15 minutes of HST footage but we are left with a handful of still images of class 40 Whistler's and Peak class 44, 45,46 locos.

Used to love the diesels back in the 80's. I lived very near the WCML and my favourites were ( and still are) the 40's, shame you had no footage as that engine noise sent chills up my spine, I think railways were in my blood though, my grandad was a railwayman till he retired in the mid70's, I always thought these were some of the best looking workhorses around.
Totally agree with you. when we were kids we used to go to Tamworth with Peaks on the High level and class 40 Main Liners (my favourites) on the Low level (Lion and Falcon as well) coming through flat out. Wonderful sounds. Modern passenger trains just sound like fast hairdryers!

To be honest, i was never a big fan of the Class43, although it did plug the holes of a sinking BR ship, i believe it was only a stop gap engine while the designers were struggling with the APT. But in the end the HST has had the last laugh, being 1 of the most reliable & clocked up more running hours than any-other BR engine?

It should have been called Greyhound. Going by those perfectly hideous faceboards, we may have been watching a tribute to the Thomas the Tank Engine stories. Now, I read the name as "Boco", which DID appear in that series. The engine in question there was a Metropolitan-Vickers design from 1950's which turned out to be spectacularly bad, and had a unique wheel arrangement; a bogie of 3 axles independently powered at one end, and an independently powered bogie of 2 axles at the other. This awarded it the wheel arrangement of 'Co-Bo'. I believe all these things have gone to the Great Scrapyard In The Sky now (in 1970's, a couple had been retained for non-running heating duties), so somebody may have decided that the Warship was to masquerade as the "Co-Bo",and inflict a near unforgivable insult upon a loco that was a joy to behold for just about any Western Region enthusiast.
Where is BR class 44? What I really want is a Video About Every BR locomotive. Every BR diesel and Electric type from the BR class 1 diesel shunter, all the way up to the largest Number for a BR class locomotive. And it better have Nothing missing.

At the end there, why would they couple a steam train to a Deltic? Took me back this video, remembered most classes but there's some there I didn't. All I see locally now is class 56's and 60's (?). Not sure about that last one, who cares, they've no character, like modern cars.

I don't get it... No offense, but how did the UK manage to consistently design the ugliest locomotives on earth ? One ugly beast after another... By contrast, EMD's E and F series units are damn near perfect.
David Othen I also like EMD's GP/SD series, with both 'standard cab' and Canadian style 'wide cab'. Although I would have made one small adjustment to the standard cab design... I would have angled the front windows outward slightly like they did with the GP30. The sense of 'flatness' while riding on the inside of a standard cab is strange. CN's wide cab design from the 70's angled the front windows outward, as did all subsequent cab designs from both GE and EMD.

It's funny to think, I'm 40 years old and those class 43 HSTs are older than I am and still in service in some places. The noise is something I can still recognise anywhere, for most of my life a long distance train journey meant an HST.
