    For windproofing, does the Neo 3 do better than field L since it doesn't have the grills?

      It was a long time ago that i did the wind test and can't really remember the results anymore. Recently though, I lit both lighters in strong wind and they both kept their flame

      i don't have them both with me right now, but IIRC they're of a different diameter. Yeah, the Field L with spare fuel tank and flint compartment would be boss.

    Hello...I have a Douglas Field Lighter S and I’m having a problem with the wick getting singed and then just smoldering instead of having a regular flame. Any idea what could be causing this? I put in a brand new wick from Douglas, but it’s still doing the same thing.

    • @dayday_13
      @dayday_13 5 років тому +3

      Usually after the first burn, the wick will get a bit singed but I think its just normal. If you're getting smoldering instead of a flame, then something is definitely wrong. That sounds like something wrong with the wick itself, but i don't see what really could have happened. Perhaps play around with cutting the wick shorter or making it longer, or even put some fuel right on the wick first to help it soak through. If nothing else, buy another wick.

    • @jayj4142
      @jayj4142 5 років тому +1

      David Weglarz Thank you, David...I thought maybe it was just a bad wick too...so I bought another one (two actually)...the Douglass brand ones, just to be safe, but it’s still burning them up.
      I will try soaking them in fluid...maybe that is. The cheaper brass one I have is saturated with fuel and does not singe, so maybe you have the right idea there. Thanks again!

      @@jayj4142 Haha, no problem man, just trying to think what it could be, the Field S is really a fantastic lighter. Usually when you fill the lighter up, and it's upside down, I would top it off and then keep holding it upside down for a minute until you start to see some dripping on the floor coming from the wick, that should do it. Or of course, you could simply take the wick out, soak it in fuel for a few minutes and then put it back, probably the better option. Hope that works for you. I've also had luck with the zippo wicks at the gas station, they work fine too. Just wondering now, it could possibly have just been a bad batch of wicks from the retailer you bought from, a batch that never got the soaking process or something, hey things happen. I don't know why I'm writing a novel, good luck man.

    • @The_Polished_Edge
      @The_Polished_Edge  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks! Well, actually Douglass lighters were an American brand between ww1 and ww2 (iirc). They were more expensive than the cheaper lighters at the time and the company died out. Tokyo Pipes then took the design and manufactured them with modern methods and a modern twist (I guess). They're supposed to be a modern trench lighter, but trench lighters aren't made as well of course.

      I’ve had my Field S a few years and the cap wasn’t closing properly, the o ring wasn’t seating, so I washed it with a cotton bud and Zippo fuel and put a bit of silicone grease on the o ring. I was careful, but grease got on the flint wheel which is now clogged up with flint residue. I’ve tried washing it out, but it needs the wheel removed to do a proper job with a fine brass brush and solvent.The screws need a specialised tool, any idea how to get one, or a workaround?
      By the way, getting more than 3 days of lighting from a Neo 3 isn’t a thing, it’s not happening. I rarely smoke, but I have to fill every couple of days for the single flame to light my woodburner. I’m gonna have to get a capped version, a #1 or #2.

    On flint size, Bic lighter flints tend to be quite large in diameter. I love lighters that I can recycle these flints in from disposables as most people will just give you the empties and sometimes they can have a good half inch or more of flint in them even when used daily for cigarette lighting.
    Protip: observe direction of grind when first installing as it makes cutting in with the new wheel very very easy.
