I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

One problem in the USA is that no matter where you live, medical care is never affordable. The criminal cabal between legislators and the medical industry (Pharma, Insurance, and facility-owning corporations) has created a complete mess for the country.

So true. I couldn't believe that I was charged nearly 500 bucks to cover office overhead - like renting a motel room by the hour?! - for the few minutes that my dermatologist to spray a few spots on my face. Then I was of course also charged for doctor's time, etc.

@@mares3841 A friend of mine was telling me about his father being in the hospital for a couple of weeks before he passed - the bill was over $500,000! Now Medicare picked it up most of that, but it points to a huge part of the problem: the fact that he stated this to me like it was "normal" and the fact that CMS is getting ripped off by the medical industry, which ultimately affects all retirees and taxpayers.
This country has turned into one giant grift. We have the best government money can buy.

@@mares3841 It sounds like you had cryotherapy to remove spots, skin tags, keratosis, etc off your face. NO INSURANCE covers that. You should have checked with various dermatologists to find out their price to do that then go with the cheapest, or with the one you felt was the most competent. When something isn’t affecting your health, it will be an out of pocket expense. You can’t complain about that.

A lot of affordability depends on your personal situation. If you live in an expensive state, but you bought your house many years ago and paid it off, and you live in a town with low property tax, you may have a great deal already. Studies have shown that retirees spend about 40% of their income on housing, so if your housing costs are very low you might consider staying put.

Colonel Harland David Sanders - the iconic image behind Kentucky Fried Chicken. His life story is a perfect example of the tenacity and hard work that paved the way for so many fledgling entrepreneurs. This video is very timely in that I am just starting to plan on where I want to retire in the next two years. Sadly, the five states mentioned are no where near my radar - but the information you have provided to reach the list of five is outstanding!! Along with affordability and safety, I would want to add tax information; active adult community; friendliness; drivability and weather. Part of my research at the moment is finding active senior condos/apartments in a variety of states. Like you said early on in your video, it would be nice to live near people my own age with similar interests. Thank you for ALL of your very informative and helpful videos. Really appreciate the time you take to educate your followers!!

I have really learned a lot from your vids! Thank you! I'm a couple years out from retirement.
As you stated, the criteria is personal. Personally, I would not want to be trapped on a large collection of volcanoes located miles out to sea (I don't care how 'wonderful' it is!) nor a spongy, alligator ridden, swampy, hurricane prone peninsula - all that water! Not a strong swimmer and after having the sand sucked out from under my feet and landing on a stinking pile of kelp as a kid on a CA beach, I gave up the ocean (well, any body of water actually like lakes etc) - I like to visit, but not live there. Additionally, getting a crick in my neck trying to see the sky doesn't interest me either so mountains are out for me. But then, I'm a flat-lander who loves watching the sky & weather, working with my horse and a 'southwest US lite" lifestyle. Living in OK I have found the weather and the medical to be quite adequate (within reason - 3 day springs & autumns are a bit nuts) - but I am generally healthy, outdoorsy type; and it helps that my extended family live within a 2 mile and/or 3 hour driving radius.

These “simply numbers” game always cracks me up. There are pockets in each state that you would and wouldn’t want to live in. Lumping crime rates from cities into these numbers do nothing but skew results. In my county, I am 90 miles away from the city that has a high crime rate but skews results for the entire state. I live by the beach, have low taxes in a relatively temperate climate. In case I need comprehensive healthcare to treat serious illness, I live close to major healthcare hubs. I’m not sharing the state because I want to keep this locale a secret.

Colonel Sanders haha...great photo. Personally, I don't mind a little bit of winter weather. I've lived in Ohio my entire life and I've come to appreciate the change of seasons. Maybe it's the rebirth of nature in the sprint, who knows, but I don't think I'd want to live anywhere without that. Also, the beauty of retirement is that you can travel to whatever whether you wish, if you get tired of the weather where you live. The 'snow bird' folks figured this out decades ago. I think Tennessee offers a happy medium for weather.

I liked this and don't have any problem with your conclusions. It's just that I can't help but think about the regional differences that exists within states. There are a lot of good examples. Is the panhandle of Florida that much different from southern Alabama and should you lump in the panhandle with south Florida? In Hawaii, the big Island is a little different from the other islands. Most people split Texas up in to about five different regions, all with their advantages and disadvantages. I think it wouldn't be doing your homework if you made a decision just based on the name of the state you are considering.

Even in West Virginia, which is small, there are huge differences. Unlike many parts of the state, Morgantown has excellent access to health care, but access doesn’t mean affordable. Housing is only slightly less expensive than where I live outside Washington, DC (though property taxes are significantly lower), and groceries are actually higher. Although it may make sense for me to move to WV someday to be near family, for the short term, I think I’m just as well off financially staying where I am, and I do enjoy some benefits from my high property taxes. Not to mention access to international airports and other pluses that make retirement much better.

I liked both this video and the one about living outside the US. I am a little too far out to have plans in fine detail, but I like the idea of having it both ways and spending part of the year in the US (e.g., Iowa or surrounding Midwest states), and part of the year in Bogota or the surrounding area (family considerations in both cases). Sort of a snowbird 2.0. In order to benefit from, say, living 6 months as an expat, I would need to figure out how to arrange housing expenses and how to set up medical arrangements to serve and benefit in both parts (e.g., try to get most our medical care outside the US, not spend more than we have to on Medicare, but not cut off options if we spend the later phase of our retirement primarily in the US). On the housing side, it would be interesting to hear a video on whether retirees have managed to use airbnb or other house-sharing arrangements to address such challenges.

Very interesting video. I know Mississippi always gets dumped upon but my daughter went to college there and got her Masters. She then got her first job at the University of Memphis, stayed for a year and couldn't wait to get out of the area, way to dangerous. I was thrilled when she decided to quit her job and Move. Where did she move, back to Mississippi along the Gulf coast. She loves Mississippi and the people are extremely friendly. I'm from NY so it almost seems like a trick. I've been down there twice now and I gotta say it's a pretty nice place. A lot of people retire down there and it seems to have everything you need. It is different then the rest of the state just like many other ocean or Gulf towns are different than inland areas . She researched it but had visited before and believe me I researched as well when she said she wanted to move down there. Yes it's Hot for 2/3rds of the year but the Winter is mild. I also think it is important to move near an airport, Gulfport Mississippi has a beautiful airport that takes 5 minutes to get through security. When you retire you want people to visit and you still want to visit people. Like any coastal area you need to watch the weather but that's like all of the East and Gulf coasts

A number of those criteria are rather mutable. Crime rate varies a lot within a state with big cities generally more dangerous than small towns. Cost of living is also extremely variable from place to place within a state. I am in Maine and there are places here where you can still buy a house for $35K and other places where $1M will get you a renovated garage. A big factor for many people is state taxation. I include income tax, property tax and state/county/city fees in that category. Depending on how a retiiree's income is structured, a low income tax state may be a big factor in affordability.
I think you left out a huge factor - Lifestyle. For example, I am a lifelong boater and simply could not be happy in an inland state. Perhaps that falls into your culture category. In my case, is the overriding factor with weather a close second (I hate hot weather). When I consider those factors alone I am restricted to Washington, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and MAYBE Connecticut although it is pretty hot there in the summer..

Colonel Sanders... can't help but smell fried chicken when you see his image. Terrific stats and presentation, as always. Friends in real estate reported that last year, they had a huge influx of buyer clients here in Alabama from all over the country. Buyers for my mother's home were moving back here from Ecuador. They had moved there when he sold his business and retired (so they could live off of SS easily) but eventually became frustrated with the inability to communicate/language barrier in every day errands & life. (Sorta thought one might consider that before making such a leap.) However, they landed where they could easily pay cash for a home in a decent neighborhood, and referred other friends to the area. Found that very interesting!

I live in Wisconsin, and so this news makes me feel happy being here, and retired, and having my house paid for. Probably the most unsafe I feel here is driving, due to weather conditions such as ice, snow, thunderstorms, hail, and some of the freeways. Besides that, the little town I live in is pretty safe. The other big problem here is a lot of alcohol consumption which can lead to accidents and a lot of domestic violence. The state as a whole is incredibly beautiful with many state parks, lots of culture, and many different things to do, eat, and enjoy. There are even UFO sightings here.

We just bought land just west of Knoxville, TN to build a home ($17k for 3½ acres in a gated waterfront community). We'll be moving from pop 285,000 to pop 5400 and I can't wait! When we filled up the rental car last week gas was $3.05, and when we got home to Phoenix it was $4.99, which is criminally absurd. It costs $100 in TN to register our RV and $1800 in Phoenix. The icing on the cake is that Tennessee doesn't tax social security or other retirement income. We plan to rent our Phoenix house out for 3 years while we tour the country in the RV while waiting for prices to come down before building. Rent and social security will pay all expenses so we won't have to touch our retirement, which is down 17%. Hopefully, it will start recovering by then!!!

I would be interested to see where you found the US healthcare system rated so high. The best ranking I could find was 18th, with most rankings placing us in the high 20s or worse and that is mostly due to the insane cost of healthcare here. I’m surprised Michigan is on the list since car insurance is very expensive, as is heating in winter, and, if retired, the state at least partially taxes pensions and withdrawals from retirement accounts. And, unlike some states, there really isn’t much of a discount for seniors on property taxes.

  • @noryaa4194
    @noryaa4194 Рік тому

A State that will be a champion attraction for retirees to live in will have these attributes:
    1. Social Security benefit is not taxed.
    2. A one time over-60 voucher of 1,000.00 dollars annually to assist seniors with housing.
    3. No cost unlimited Ride bus ride Pass.
    4. A lower cost of living.
    5. Good Clinics and Hospitals.
    6. Good number of Colleges and Universities, *Blue-Collar* *Trade* *Schools* and Technical Schools.
    7. Safety by low crime.
    8. Excellent cell phone signal coverage.
    9. LOW rental housing rates (Especially for well-appointed STUDIOS).
So, this is not even a list of 10.
This list describes a State that has a lot of older adults, and a lot of younger adults, and little in-between (less presence of families in the middle of Life with infants, toddlers and school aged children or youth).
This is an interesting scenario since the older aged group will likely serve the younger aged group in the form of part-time working roles (as the young adults are primarily engaged in full time school academic schedules).
The State that can make these changes readily and become the very best State for seniors and retirees appears to be Arkansas.
