      Thats awesome, yeah i was trying to figure out a way to really say it because i remember not being able to doit, and it wasnt that my edge wasn't sharp enough most times it was the technique was off, but once i figured it out I got it and it made sense

    I had a blade sharpened down to 3000 grit diamond stone, it was a sharpening jig so I literally couldn't mess it up. I polished it with a leather strop with green compound that, as I remember, is equivalent to 35,000 grit...I don't know for sure though. THAT SAID I could pop hair no problem, I couldn't whittle a hair until my wife (whose hair I was trying with) told me that hair has grain like a snakes scales. Smooth one way, rough the other, (she's a cosmetologist) . So I turned it around and whittled a way quite easily haha.

    Thanks for explaining the difference. I was thinking that whittling the hair meant cutting it in the direction that's harder to cut.

    Question Jared, or anyone else that could answer, can you get a blade to whittle a hair stropping the blade with cardboard and compound on it? Or stropping on a denim strop and compound? I can't seem to get there (hair whittling sharp), I think I know the answer, but, I may not have proper technique to pull it off.

    That bevel looks pretty shallow… I’m sure that helps alot? Most of my edges can wittle but inconsistently @ 17 degrees per side. Also some steels take a better hair whittling edge then others… i find m390 pita for that kind of stuff… dunno if its just me😅

      I recently got a Sage 5 LW and it could whittle hair. Spydercos factory edges are really sharp, but I’ve noticed they don’t hold an edge very long.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  3 роки тому

      @@itsaknifestyle8482 yeah that is awesome! Yeah i dont usually try to many factory edges out on hair but have many times and the only one ive found so far was the Rockstead, and possibly one Twosun I can usually tell if a knife will Whittle hair just by touching the edge, and spyderco edges are usually sharp but ive only ever seen one that had good bevels, there bevels are almost always completely off, and they are burnt up sometimes, but thats also pretty typical.

    • @zurich264
      @zurich264 3 роки тому

      @@NeevesKnives in my experience spydercos factory edges will almost always whittle a hair if you take the factory edge to a sharpmaker med fine and finish with the uf stone.. Add a strop after and its crazy.. My first hair whittling edge was a military doing just that.. Even with me having a wicked edge at the time.. I now freehanf and get so much better edges now that i actually understand a burr. Had i known it then it would of helped my wicked edge tremendously

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  3 роки тому

      @@zurich264 definitely understanding the burr is extremely important and is the difference between an edge and an extremely sharp edge

    The factory edge on my seki city spyderco stretch in zdp was actually hair whittling. Twas my first seki spyderco and set me up for disappointment as my k390 from them was really bad by comparison.

  • @kevinAuman1

    Different grinds make a difference also as well as the steel, ex my S35VN sebenza with a hollow grind has a mirror polished edge and it tops hairs or whittles them and has a nasty bite but my ZT 0909 in the same steel will not and doesn't like to wear a polished edge at all and it has a much thicker blade....

    I really like the science you bring to this. I might have to get myself a jewelers loop or something.
