The problem with A1398 is that the keyboard has rivets instead of screws, so that's why in 5:40 he forces the old keyboard out. I'm hesitant that the holes in which the rivets were can actually hold screws, even if they come with the keyboard replacement kit.
Actually that works well. The body is made of aluminium and the screws are made of steel, so they'll cut their way through. You should use a proper screwdriver and be careful that the screw is straight down before starting. And of course you should stop early enough, because otherwise you'll destroy the 'drill'. It's not too complicated to find the proper point to stop.
Thanks Broadway! Just replaced mine using your video as my second memory of the screws and placements... got to give it to you, the notches holding the keyboard in place due to the old crappy plastic some of them broke off during removal but no major issue. Overall happy with the result. Thanks again!
Thank you for the video! Even if it does show the length of every screw, it helped me a lot to repair my MacBook11,5, Mid 2015, 15" (A1398). Some notes for everybody who wants to follow this guide: The replacement will destroy the old keyboard, because the rivets are very strong and it takes a lot of force to remove them. I highly recommend to buy the new keyboard with a set of screws and a new cover with the backlight (the black foil). The screws will fit into the holes for the rivets (at least the ones that I bought), but a good PH0 screwdriver should be used. A new backlight comes with fresh glue and is not that expensive, so it's worth to spend that additional money in my opinion. The keyboard itself has the same quality as the original one, so I'm really happy with the result. I assume that is is from the same manufacturer as the original one (OEM). After the repair my MacBook feels like a new one when writing! I also recommend to remove the left and right soundbars during disassemby. Each has only 3 screws, so it's easier to attach the backlight cover afterwards. I did't remove the wlan (antenna) cables, but let them attached at the right fan and the mainboard. VERY IMPORTANT: I strongly recommend to everybody who wants to do this repair to take a lot of photos during disassembly, measure the length of EVERY screw with a digital caliper and put them in different small bags!!
Would like a video to show the early 2013 where it's done slow and precise, while actually talking us through the process. That way there wouldn't be any steps missed, as well as possible 'options' on how to simply certain steps for those of us that have never stepped into the realm of working on electronics! I have changed the battery and SSD drive, but obviously not gotten into the inner workings as in this video. Do all the screws taken out...are they all the same size, or should you separate to make sure the same screw goes back in the same hole, for the components?
you should allways disconnect the main battery before you begin to unscrew and remove stuff like fans, wifi card and so on. But apperently you failed todo that and risks is that you could shorten the mainboard and kill it since you did not disconnect the battery on first thing todo.
I had the same experience. The one that came with the new keyboard is super-long. Not only does he not show the part where he connects the new keyboard, the old keyboard is disconnected before he opens the case.
I saw that you've asked three years ago, but might help others: It's shown in another video ua-cam.com/video/RVKeA6kboQg/v-deo.html at around 3:37. The other guy however has removed the cooling pipes from the mainboard that I don't recommend. You should put some tape on the connector (look at the old one) to pull at that tab to reconnect it. That needs to be done BEFORE the keyboard is installed underneath the mainboard.
what would you charge to replace my keyboard on my early 2013 retina? I tried cleaning all of the keys but it still doesn't feel right!! I can't type on it!! with each depress it either sticks or it makes an audible crunch sound!!
Ok, so I decided to clean the fans of my out of warranty MacBook Pro mid 2014 15". Before doing anything (like disassembling the fans) I disconnected the battery connector and started the cleaning (with a very soft brush). I accidentally misplaced the screws on the left fan by putting 4.4 mm T5 Torx screw in place of the 3.9 mm T5 Wide Head Torx screw. Now the mac looks dead. No light on the magsafe, no power on no nothing. Does anyone know if the threads for the screw go all the way out of the motherboard or i just destroyed some layer of the motherboard ? Please let me know ANYONE i'm desperate!
It is really small. Normally used in watch ...we found some screws is are only around 0.2 mm dimensions and 5 mm on length....also there is no track on the keyboard frame. , so you need drill a small hole by you self....
i need to fix the screen to my macbook pro retina 15 inch 2015 if i got a screen from an earlier year with the same model number would it work with my macbook

Good video, thou, guy never showed the part, how he removed rivets, which is actually most important. I'm sitting here with an open mac keyboard removed and scratching my head, how to remove leftovers from rivets...
You have to use special tapping screws to properly thread the rivet holes. It's kinda amazing how Apple made everything so unnecessarily difficult to repair.
I saw that you've asked 2 years ago, but it might help somebody else: the connector for the backlight is on the side with the fan output, at the right side. It's tiny connector just left of the screw that is removed at 1:08 in the video.

You forgot the part about the rivets, the most important part.
That and a few other "key" things were conveniently left out... the hardest stuff people usually leave out.

do you have a video on how to change the battery? the one on youtube that uses Isopropyl Alcohol isnt very thorough.

Can you provide a list for the tools you used in the description box?
Hi, my keyboard flex cable is damaged, do I have to change the whole keyboard or only the cable?
No wonder the service cost is multiple times the price of the keyboard itself.
After watching this video I am definitely not going to do this myself.
will the 2012 macbook retina keyboard fir for the 2013? all 15inch
Glad to see you made sure to take ESD precautions there. /s
NotJustAnotherRandomGuy you can get ankle straps
What is the point of this video if you do not show how to connect keyboard cable to motherboard. you did not

Is it the same for the A1398 Early 2013?
shitty design by apple, Thinkpad is 2 screws to replace a new keyboard.
They purposely design it like this so they people can't fix their laptops themselves and have to get it done from Apple at a huge fee.
Interesting comment, considering that this very video shows you how to DIY repair it.

Omg that's bad. Did you figure it out? These things can be tricky. I tried changing the housing of my iphone and ended up making it dead forever :(

+TheCorrector Mine too. How did you solve it?
+TheCorrector lol, i've just used super glue. 😂
i need to fix the screen to my macbook pro retina 15 inch 2015 if i got a screen from an earlier year with the same model number would it work with my macbook
no
Keyboard replacement on a Macbook is such a pain to do... (speaking from experience) :(((
what size tiny screws do you have to get to install the replacement keyboard?
Where I ordered my keyboard from on Amazon - they had an option for adding 100 screws as well, which I chose of course.
Hello, 5:00 it's led keyboard ? thanks

i don't understand why it skips over the reinstallation of the logic board, & the keyboard to the logic board. sketchyyyy...
A few inards bits left out. Still in the box.
+newvoyeur LOL, Don't worry, it's just a kidney. They have two. ;-)
where is the keyboard lighting connection?
I saw that you've asked 2 years ago, but it might help somebody else: the connector for the backlight is on the side with the fan output, at the right side. It's tiny connector just left of the screw that is removed at 1:08 in the video.

Horroroso trabajar en el macbook pro retina de Apple. Está hecho para que nadie lo toque ni siquiera el servicio técnico de ellos.
