The problem is not people with power but a population which does not understand democracy and or how it works. In a normal democracy the power of the state is vested in it's people. So there is nothing wrong with Raila or Juma, or Mama Maiko being powerful, the power of the state is vested in them, as the people, because through their right to vote, they establish government, which then creates laws (sane laws) which allow for a civil society to thrive. Unfortunately, as it is in many parts of Africa, a lot of the people who get elected usurp the public office they are elected to and become self conditioned kings and queens, forgetting they are required to serve and not be served. When they realize they are not being served, fear and shock are their reaction, which inhibit their ability to think and govern and in turn, become dictators who hold on to power and use the very institutions meant to provide the public service and protection for all, for their own selfish gains and against the people who elect them to these offices. So you can expect civil strife and constitutional crisis every time the elections come because everyone is fighting for the same piece of cake and or a place at the only dinning table on the land.

Raila was leading by over 1M votes, then govt shutdown all media for 12 hours and the next day Kibaki was leading by 1M votes. VERY DEFINITION OF POWER HUNGRY.
