Owner Review: TrailMaster Mid XRX Go Cart

  • This is a quick overview of the TrailMaster Mid XRX go cart. This is not an ATV. It's essentially a mass-produced Chinese made go cart with a single cylinder 6.5HP lawn mower style engine (also apparently a Chinese made with no brand name on it that I can find). In the video I go over the build quality and my impressions of the go kart as well as what you should expect when you order one (the condition it's in when it arrives - some assembly required). This is not the 'Mini', but the Mid size. Be careful that you don't buy the XRX Mini if you're needing something for an older child. I'd say anywhere from 7 or 8 years old to maybe 13 or so would be a good age range for this go cart.
    Overall, for $1,500 I'd say it's worth it. It has plenty of power and has a reasonably smooth ride. Due to the low clearance of the rear sprocket, it's not really intended for really rough terrain where you need lots of ground clearance.
    Most likely, you won't find one of these in stock at a local dealer. From my experience, just about all the dealers of these are online only and they don't keep them in stock. When you place an order, the dealer (the middle man) sends an order to the distributor warehouse and the go kart is shipped directly to you from the warehouse. I imagine in most cases, this is how it happens and the dealer NEVER sees the unit before it's shipped to you and therefore has no ability to double check to be sure your kart has all the parts with it, etc, etc. Usually this isn't a problem, but I can see how the dealer never laying eyes on the unit before it comes to you could be a problem if there are missing bolts or other misc parts that come with the kart (because like I said in the video, these are not fully assembled from the factory). Mine had a few lose bolts just laying at the bottom on the cardboard and could very easily have fallen out during shipment...which would have been a big pain in the neck to then go back to the dealer and request missing parts.

    We've had one for several months now and my kids ride it hard on rough ground. I put on some 18" diameter low pressure quad tires on the back and it now rides much, much better.
    Also added an intake kit with larger jets for more power.

    I was reaching for my wallet when I saw how low that sprocket is to the ground. That is a deal breaker as I have some property that is rough that I think my son can ride on, but would need more clearance than that! Probably would help to get bigger diameter wheels for it, but now you have to find wheels that will fit those hubs as well as be concerned about raising the center of gravity. Nice review though, thanks.

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  2 роки тому

      @@t.n.s.hilton3697 I had to replace the bearings in the rear axle. Well, maybe not the axle but that thing they call the 'jack shaft' and that was around $30 for parts, but a real pain to get those bearings out (had to buy a toll for that). I did also replace the carburetor in hopes of having an easier cold start (ran great once started) because it just wasn't easy to start from day one unless you really pulled the cord hard (electric start wasn't spinning it fast enough to start like that). It does start easier now. That was an easy job and only about $20. We honestly haven't used the go kart very much, so it's hard to say what else might have been an issue over the years if it had been used a lot more. Based on what I've seen, I think it would hold up for us with the mild terrain we have here (it wouldn't get punished much on our land).

  • @mikeplaysit

    ....That's how all Lead-Acid type batteries such as motorcycle and lawnmower batteries like that are shipped. It's just how it's done, even when you simply purchase the battery alone, you're going to get the battery, and the container of acid. Depending on the battery brand filling it it's different, whether you have to simply tip the container over and stick it into the battery and let it sit so that the acid disperses properly, or fill it via a tube from a container. Don't quote me on this, but I believe it's because of UPS/FedEx regulations and other shipping regulations. Now, if you get a dry cell type of battery, you don't have to deal with all that, you just pop the sucker in. My buddy owns a motorcycle shop and we had to fill batteries all the time. It's really not that big of a deal, you just fill it and make sure that the acid is properly soaked in and dispersed.

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  8 років тому

      +MikePlaysIt It wasn't a big deal to fill the battery. The battery was dead within less than a year though. I replaced it with a better quality name brand motorcycle battery. The original was extremely cheap and lightweight.

    • @mikeplaysit
      @mikeplaysit 8 років тому +1

      Hooked on Photography Yeah, it's really not that big of a deal. But really if I can do without it I will. That's why I prefer dry cells, especially on a bike. I'm not a huge fan of acid. lol

    Did you pay the extra money to have it assembled? They charge you $100 bucks to have it almost assembled totally. I was wondering if they ship it the same way weather you pay the $100 or not and its their way of making an extra $100. Thanks. Is it holding up?

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  5 років тому

      No, I did the final assembly myself. It's been awhile but I think the wheels needed to be put on, the roll bar installed and some basic things like that. If you have basic set of tools and are mechanically inclined, it's not too hard to put together. Be prepared to have a big wood pallet and metal shipping frame to dispose of too, once you get it assembled. It's holding up ok. It had a few issues here and there even though we haven't used it much, but not too bad overall.

It was squealing pretty loud and it seemed to be going slower. I lifted it up and spun the wheels by hand and could tell the noise was coming from that shaft that has the chain pulley and belt drive on it. The bearings were pretty cheap to buy and it works great now, but it was a royal pain to get those bearings out.

The cheap battery is already dead and will not crank the engine, but when I first got the battery out and installed it, I knew it wouldn't last very long and they're not that expensive anyway to replace with a good one. It's so easy to start with the pull start, you don't really need a battery unless you want one for the convenience.

      Hooked on Photography You said the frame was fairly built. I'm guessing you never rolled it? I have the exact same kart, blue too, and I have rolled mine twice. Once at 15 mph with one person, and a second time showing off with two people in it at 30 mph. No bends or tweaks and it still runs fine. I say it was really well built from experience, and I'm am thankful for the roll cage. And the suspension held up perfectly in the rollover as the kart slid after flipping. Nice review though. Btw, I am really light and short at 13, so it fits me perfectly.
      They also changed them since this video, I got mine 6 months ago, and the seats are more comfortable, it has turn signals and mirrors, and 2 more lights on top.(I didn't install them and I'm glad because they would be broken from the rollovers) The suspension came uninstalled. We had to put the shocks on,(my dad and I) and put the rims on and inflate the tires. I would say a great buy, we got it on sale for $1,200 and $150 Shipping.

    How's it holding up?

      'Jackshaft' bearings went bad after less than 20 hours of use. Battery was bad after no more than a year. It is nearly impossible to start via the electric start...just cranks and cranks and hardly ever starts so you need to pull it hard a few times to start it. It runs perfect once you get it started, but for some reason it just hardly ever starts when using the starter. Other than that it's been fine. For some I imagine the no start when using the starter is a deal-breaker but for me it's not a huge issue since I can start it for my son with a few pulls usually.

      Hooked on Photography thanks for the response! How did you tell the bearings needed to be replaced? Even after replacing the battery you couldnt get the electric start to work? I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on one for my 8 year old daughter very soon so I appreciate the input greatly.

Even with a fresh battery it just seemed to crank too slow to start it. It seemed like it should have been fast enough to start it, but I'm not sure why it wouldn't start. Pulling it by hand is easy and you can yank it hard and fast which seemed to do the trick for starting it. Not sure if mine is the only one like that, but that's how mine is. Overall I'd say it's not a bad machine and for the price it's reasonable. I guess I'd just be careful if a person that buys one is not all that handy with do-it-yourself repairs because you may end up needing to fix a few issues now and then.

    Looks pretty nice for the price until I saw that rear sprocket. This make it practically useless except on grass.

      $1,500 back when I bought it 9 years ago. Prices have gone up since then. My son outgrew it. He barely used it and I was able to sell it for nearly what I paid for it.
