Trying to really express the importance of patience, observation, critically analyzing the findings from that observation, and being able to humble yourself down to asking around the people you trust with experience to help when you're not sure are lessons that everyone needs to hear that applies to pretty much everything in life. The tangents while exploring the situation kind of remind of Adrian Black when he's going through old computers/electronics. Both of you are taking the audience along for the ride showing your thought process along the way and aren't just willing to jump in with corrections but are happy to do so to help everyone learn and improve. I remember talking to some people in the BMW/Euro community back when I got my E36's before I decided to engine swap them. Those people were some of the most aggressive closed off people I had ever talked to at the time when it came to the electronic side of the equation. I heard over and over basically "we're not telling you how to do this because you'll take our work". On the flip side when I first moved to Toyota for most of my engines in projects (mostly 2AZ I4, 1GR V6, and 1UZ V8) I had friends in Japan that were jumping at helping out with everything from start to finish while I was there for other work and vacation and long after. To be fair I never have had issues with Merc Diesel people nor anyone when I worked with 20v 1.8t or TDI VW stuff...maybe it was just the BMW people?

I've done that in a couple of my videos; cut in and correct myself once I figured out my original hypothesis was wrong. It's good you figured it out. It lost oil pressure and has oil full of sparklies, but I just dont care to tear it apart at this point to figure out what is even hurt (other than a bearing.)

Dang man, I've been breaking my rear end to turbo my 2004 Acura TL on my own after fabricating everything to fit and it runs, makes boost, and pulls decently, but it needs a tune and it also needs some work because I keep fighting random exhaust leaks and its driving me nuts. I'm not trying to make crazy power, just some extra pull, so 5-8 psi is plenty. It has all of the supporting mods, but I can't win with these random exhaust leaks. I even had the rear flange milled perfectly flat and it's STILL leaking from the rear (even with a new gasket coated in copper RTV, and my engine has the exhaust manifolds cast into the heads, so it's just a 4 bolt flange outlet). I am absolutely not a professional fabricator, but if you could see what I built out of my amateur garage with nothing more than stainless pipe and a Lincoln MIG welder, you'd be surprised.

Right after my first grandchild was born, I was helping out by cooking for my daughter. She had purchased Hello Fresh. I had never tried them before, but they turned out to be really nice meals and very convenient. The ingredients were fresh and the recipe cards were full color and well written. Thumbs up for Hello Fresh.
Jared, can you put a hard upper limit for fuelling into the map, that is considerably less than the combustion space volume, to prevent a reoccurrence of the hydro-locking. I also suspect that the excess fuelling was combined with a failure of the ignition on cylinder 1, so that by the time the piston got up to TDC, there was a large amount of unburnt fuel still present.
There are lots of prebuilt safety’s built into the dominator and you can even create your own, but the hardware is only as good as what you tell it to do. Some 1s and 0s got crossed in exhaustion while the tune was getting set up, I didn’t have hands on it myself so I can’t answer exactly what.
Hey Jared! Hope you've recovered from whichever questionable illness you had over the holidays. Love the video! Wish I knew that about the bearings when I tore into my blown up VQ lol
Great channel. I've gone through what you are a dozen times if not more. I'd suggest running a healthy factory untouched GEN4 small vore engine. "JY SBE". Get all your bugs worked out and build a motor on the side. My JY motors ran BETTER than anything I've had put together by a machine shop. More reliable and more than durable. Enough to easily meet an 8.50 cage cert. 4.8/5.3... doesn't matter. Last setup was a $400 4.8 and it lasted 3 years in the 8.70 range with a cam and untouched OEM heads. "building" a motor is overrated if you aren't looking to go much quicker than 8.50's. Guy's are going 7's on untouched OEM 4.8 bottom ends. I've NEVER seen a hyro lock do what you are suggesting. There's not enough time for the cyl to fill and lock. Really dont' think that was the issue. May go back to the log and look at oil pressure during the launch. Really looks like oil starvation to me.
another good thing is check the rod bearing caps torque with a torque wrench before removing especially in a high dollar engine helps remove all doubt and questions when all said and done.

You took it in the direction it needed to go. I’d love to see you get a first gen 4Runner.. 86-89 22re with ifs. Then make a series on how to solid axle swap it with a kit you can buy online like trail gear. That way you can show how to rebuild the axle as well. Toyota axles only. I and people like me need help.. 😂
@@TheQuestionableGarage well I definitely want to see just a video on that please?! Still would love to see you do a axle swap. I’m buying a 84 Toyota pickup that’s been on a hill for 10 years maybe more for $1500 and I plan to use its axle on my 4Runner. I thought about fixing the pickup.. I might do that if possible but the window has been cracked open that entire time… I live in Colville Washington by Idaho and Canada.. so you can imagine what the interior might look like. the only fukup us not learning from your mistakes - and we never stop learning. build it better bro, and tell Freddy we miss him and wish him the best. 😀
2 questions: don't remember if you cut the filter open... Only reason I ask is the "fabric" you found on the pickup, could it have been filter media? Secondly, does anyone make a small inline filter for the turbo feed line? Keep all the junk out of the turbo....of course you'd have to check it/ change it often to prevent starvation as it clogs up....
There "may" have been some oil starvation involved with the bearing damage but I think it would have been secondary to the one main problem; that bearing did NOT have the correct clearance and overheated. Either that one bearing was thicker than all the rest, the rod or rod journal was not the same as the rest or the rod journal is out of round. If this wasn't true you would be seeing the same damage to more than one bearing.
The tolerances were all confirmed on assembly, measured and known to be correct. There is a impact mark on the crank, different from a spun bearing. Again I chased the answer a good bit and assumed it was assembly error but double checking it was all correct and clear.
I know it had nothing to do with the failure, but I wonder if those fibers in the pickup were from the oil filter. I think an oil filter autopsy could be interesting!

Great video as always. I just love watching you work through these projects. You'll figure it out I'm sure of it. Hope you are going to Hot Rod Power Tour.
Awesome troubleshooting!! 👍
Thanks for sharing. 😊
Thanks for sharing!!
That guy is still a some beach, good on, lot on the plate.
I actually understand his explanations...I like that
Gotta love those unbreakable LS engines !!!
Hey Jared! Hope you've recovered from whichever questionable illness you had over the holidays. Love the video! Wish I knew that about the bearings when I tore into my blown up VQ lol
6:56 I’m quoting this and putting it on my wall for motivation.
The best is only wounded, it'll be back. Any plans to put out more content on the 4Runner flip project? I was really enjoying that one.
It’s all wrapped up and gets picked up this weekend… the next flip car might just be a 4 runner too!
The real deal, nothing less, nothing more. REALLY enjoy your videos.
My old Milwaukee at work does that sometimes and you can switch direction take the battery out put it back and it will work oddly enough.
Jared is a very great mechanick! And just says he was wrong that’s why i love this channel
Roadblock might be a good time to put some feelers out about a framing machine. Might be a good investment
I love this kind of diagnosis process (especially when it's someone else's car). It's too bad that the destruction has to happen first...
Glad you figured it out!
Doctor is in the house!!! Amazing vid Jared!! Luvd every minute. Take care
another good thing is check the rod bearing caps torque with a torque wrench before removing especially in a high dollar engine helps remove all doubt and questions when all said and done.
I agree with you people just slow down and smell the roses and try to help everybody this world will be better off I really enjoyed this video No 1 is perfect in this world we all make mistakes As long as we learn from them
I have a Great Pyrenees also. And he’s an indoor dog, which means hair everywhere! I see it on your clothes and it reminds me of our struggle.
I was told they only have two coat blow outs a year, which is true they just last 6 months each
I didn’t comment because I figured you’d get to many comments to read them all and mine wouldn’t be read. I’m glad your saving roadblock! I love watching your videos, to me your one of the best car UA-camrs hands down! I watched wrench everyday with tavarish and a couple other people that came and went.
There is that big beauty 80series cruiser in the yard but I’ve already done all the axles and transfercase upgrades before UA-cam time!
@@TheQuestionableGarage well I definitely want to see just a video on that please?! Still would love to see you do a axle swap. I’ve seen people on UA-cam do it but their videos don’t compare to the quality of yours.
I’m 22 and I daily drive my 86 4Runner. I’m told the 22r needs the head.. something in the valve train got messed up.. but could be anything.
Thank you for replying!
Well Done Guys I never thought a Engine could do that on a Miss Fire but I do Now Great Vlog Thanks
He'll, Jared. If I had my passport and the finances to do it. I'd have picked up the fiberglass shell and bring it down.
AND I LIVE 4 HRS ON THE CANADIAN SIDE OF DETROIT!
sorry for yelling *laughs*
You and your channel (and tavarish and jack etc) are all awesome and would love to meet you all one day and help on a project if ever possible
Jared,
Any Lexus/Toyota dealer in there right mind would kill to have a master tech half as good as you are. Your are worth your weight in gold and and especially excell in the Toyota/Lexus service knowledge. The service department would have there own money printing machine! Love your channel and you make me want to turn back the clock 30 years and be your apprentice. Keep up the great content.
This was really cool, how you were talking to us like we were there, and I remember that 2 step, but its great to have the answers, bloody brilliant video Jared 👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘Cheers from Melbourne Australia
12:30am. And Jared can now sleep talk me with humour, good music and stuff to learn!
Sad to hear about the engine. But just want to say that I really like these types of videos where you get to learn things and when you tell them as if you were sitting in a classroom and you were the teacher!
The Questionable Garage became the Answerable Garage. Nice detective work.
Your shop is looking amazing. Keep it up.
Great diagnosis, and that sucks. Lol. But you still beat an entire shop of guys. Matt.
The world needs a 90 degree sharpy and a pencil too!
the only fukup us not learning from your mistakes - and we never stop learning. build it better bro, and tell Freddy we miss him and wish him the best.
Wow those intake runners are huge.
10:00 So what is the right tool to put the OW back together? :)
