18:48 Great instinct on seeing the problem with white’s activity with the two rooks. Someone suggested the line in chat to go up 2 pieces for a rook and i checked the engine. It was around +1.5 for white. Blacks knight is so out of play it almost counts as nothing.
Perfect example of why material isnt everything.
The two best rooks against 2 effectively worthless minor pieces.
Kasparov said if you make 10 threats in a row your opponent will collapse, this game was an illustration on how to play with the initiative: black was making threats all the time from the opening, almost like he was white
Great win! Someday I'd like to see some kind of a mock pregame prep video. To an 1200ish player like myself, it always feels miraculous that an IM/GM-level player can memorize entire trees of variations for a specific opponent in just an hour or two. I realize it's probably a hard thing to capture on video; I imagine you're just zipping through variations and soaking it all in. Maybe you could record a prep session, then replay a section of it at half speed or with pauses, and overdub what's going through your mind ("He probably wouldn't choose this line... this looks interesting but I don't fully understand black's compensation... this variation looks tricky for my opponent...")?
I can picture you during the game saying, "there's a funny line..."
Now this is what I call entertaining chess. Full of traps and venomous lines, with a little bit of pulled pork.
Kudos to your opponent for holding on. And definitely a win you can be proud of.
wow the opponent was very tough and tactics were spotted all the way through the game, ironically he fell into a simple fork in the end... very nice game
one move away from time control too. he must be really kicking himself

The time pressure is so real 😂
It's surprisingly easy to miss the fork simply because none of the pieces involved moved on the last move, but instead the square was vacated by the bishop

1 time pressure
2 tired from defending the whole game
3 since Bb4 attacked the c5 pawn he thought that was the only threat (if Bb4 didn’t attack a pawn he would have probably saw it)

It looks like Be8 was a big mistake. I set up the board just before that move, and Stockfish gave it +0.1. After that move, it was -2.5 (depth: 23). Nd4 instead keeps things balanced. And instead of having the queen get kicked around so much, Stockfish favors Qc4 instead of Qf4 a couple of moves later, offering the exchange of queens.

Nice game Eric. Good commentary. I’ve NEVER had you respond to a comment with your million viewers but I was wondering, HOW do you evolve to a point of seeing moves and moves ahead? Is it just experience or is there some secret to get ther faster?

Excellent game. Constant forks is kind of incredible to see.
The lines the engine spots are crazy! And the problem doesn't seem to be that they're deep, but rather that they're moves the humand mind rejects unconsciously and also the opportunities for tactics to erupt come all the time. Humans seem to rely on intuition feel to look for crazy tactics in a position vs playing fast with a safe looking move. How do you know THIS is the move to examine counter-i tuition choices? Crazy.

Before I watch the video, the idea in the thumbnail, is one I do ALL THE TIME 😂 my thought process is "If they block with the knight, I have a pin, if they block with the bishop, we can trade if we decide to, but hopefully, they block with a commital pawn move. In all outcomes, I can always move the bishop back if I don't like it." My favorite outcome though, is when they block with the knight, and then move the Queen 😂 I get to take the knight and double their pawns
Edit: Wow, what a game! I didn't see that the queen was free to move lol but I wouldn't have seen the line Eric saw! I suppose that's why I'm still a low rank 😂

This game is so sensitive for me because like your opponent im terrible under time pressure. I need to think things through completely, at my own pace. He was playing well until time got the better of him and that hits home for me.
Actually, one question. Did you look at Bc6+ Be4 Rd3+ after Nc3? I was thinking you could trade bishops there and maybe have some rook activity on the third rank?
You definitely prepared it much better by waiting and improving your dsb. Super tactical. But wanted to know if you looked at it beforehand or if I missed anything, since I didn't look at the engine for this.

the fun battle is really fun indeed
So many clever ideas, all expertly nullified by your opponent, who is clearly a very strong player, this is the sort of stuff that convinces me to stop being so over-confident in the mid-game, no matter how clever I think I am, i should expect the opponent to find a way out.
with the line at 12 minute with the rook sack, what if they just didnt take knight and the queen moved to a safe square? would that sack have been worth while another way?

Engine lines are so complex is it really ever worth analyzing with them?
There's certainly a spectrum. However, the lines involving multiple computer moves from both sides are on the far end of that spectrum. The vast majority of engine lines are very understandable when everything is laid out. The unprecedented skill of today's top players is in no small part thanks to the accessibility of chess engines and the incredible motifs they inspire.
It doesn't matter how complex engine lines are. If you have calculated a line, you can check with the engine to compare it with your intuition.
If the engine matches your line, then your intuition is probably good.
If you engine doesn't match your line, it will either show you an obvious thing you have overlooked, or it does something you don't understand and you can try and understand it to learn.
It just doesn't make sense to not use engine analysis. It takes seconds to do and gives you a another pair of eyes to look at a position on demand, which at worst you can just shrug off as "engine only gameplay", but will almost always will give you insight into a position that you originally overlooked.
It's like a 1000 rated player refusing to watch GM games to learn because "GM lines are so complex is it really ever worth analyzing with them?"
Imo yes because it's super interesting and you never know how complex the line is until you look at it. Sometimes it was something you could've seen.

Engine says your opponent played 87% accuracy. It didn't seem like that to me. This game was like 2 5th degree blackbelts throwing down mental martial arts. Really impressive play from both sides.
