Can you imagine Rush opening a show with a clip of Dave yelling "GEDDY!! Your bass is gooched!!"... lol
As a Rush fan that would be absolutely fantastic.
GEDDY, YOUR BASS IS GOOCHED
I think that bass looks fine without any pickguard.
At least without that pick guard.
You should lure Geddy and Scully over with food prepared on the grill. That would make for an awesome story, and or movie........
Dunno why but I've always got hard for block inlays, love the way that neck looks.
The brass plate under the pickups actually lowers the 60 cycle hum a little. Love these bass videos! 🤙
BOBP = banana of biblical proportions
Give it to Bytor. His snow dog will love it.
he's hammered again!🍸
Living in Houston Texas, we have crazy humidity. I have a couple of basses that the necks shift regularly. I have found that hanging them on wall hangers from the headstock seems to keep movement to a minimum.
i"m a big fan of your work great job keep it up..... my favourite video is the movie done maybe 2-3 years ago with a neck thru bass
I have the Japanese version of this and rarely have to adjust the neck ! Fall and spring an 1/8th of a turn maybe . Great bass !
I've got a squire vintage 77RI model and its basically the perfect solution to the Geddy Bass problem. Slim taper neck, very thin and satin finish so its fast. But, i rarely change the truss rod and the adjustment is on the headstock anyway
Maybe Fender should consider carbon fiber reinforcement rods, and/or laminated necks on these.
I got my Geddy Lee MIJ in 2003. Had the neck adjusted just a hand full of times. Other than, its been a gigging horse for 19 years and still going strong.
He had a drink or two here 🥃
"I'm a victim of someone else's previously poorly executed attempt at using Phillips screws with a spoon"
What does that even mean?? His drunken rambling is hilarious
I love my Geddy Lee jazz bass MIM! No issues, sounds great.
I have a Japanese Geddy Jazz. One of the best basses I've ever played.
Regarding the truss rod adjusting....Take the pick-guard off. It's much easier. And looks a lot sexier.
Mines a Sunburst one, looks even better.
I just recently purchased a CIJ Geddy (1999) that is in excellent condition. Any tips to keep it that way? How often should the truss rod be checked?
@@beeblebrux2112 I usually adjust the truss rod twice a year, just like my other basses.
Last week I put on a set of D'Addario Pro Steels (XL EPS 220).
Really low tension strings. And sound great.
It all comes down to stiffness and hardness of the neck wood. You can tell instantly when you pick up a bass or guitar. Pull back on the neck from the bottom frets until it frets out. Some necks are strong, some are rubber. Put the rubber necked ones back on the shelf and keep looking...
God Aye. ¨The More Often You Tweak - The Less It Needs Tweaking!! Cheers from Madrid.
mouse-pad make great under-the-pickup foam for fender imo
thanks for the sticker Dave! got it today.
great stuff Dave always learn something from you THANK YOU
It's not always the trussrod. The saddles of my Ibanez gradually lowered over time. The little screws managed to turn by vibration. After having applied some Loctite it didn't happen anymore.
I've used clear nail polish to keep screws from backing out, not just on guitars but on wind instruments as well. That's not a knock on Loctite, but I usually have the nail polish on hand for instant scratch first aid (keep the metal from oxidizing, and fix it properly later).
The fact that the saddle screws can start rattling and the bridge pieces can get tilted when I know damn well I balanced them says you're right -- they will move on their own unless secured somehow.
Dave , thank you for imparting !!!!
Dave, if you have carpal tunnel think about getting the release surgery. I had a bad case of CT in both hands and the surgery was very easy and fixed my hands! I would wake up in the middle of the night with both hands on fire and that never happens anymore. It was the best thing I've ever done!!!
My GL Japan had the brass plates too. I thought the neck was defective because I needed to adjust it every time the weather changed, but I guess it was the way the neck is. I later got a neck with the carbon rods and that rarely needs adjustment.
I think you should say 3/32 " for the treble side instead of 3/16 " for the pickup height. But maybe I'm wrong.
I've never had issues so long as I use the INTENDED string gauge of 45-105. I did do one mod to mine and dremel the pickguard for access to the truss rod without taking the neck off, but rarely have to mess with it.
40- 100's on mine ... I would think everone would think of that
That's a good looking bass... Similar look to the old Ibanez Eagle Bass, but without the crazy curved horns. My old school buddy had one of those and man that bass weighed a ton but boom! it sounded great.
It seems like the import series of Geddy Lee Jazz Basses experiences more than their fair share of neck issues, at least from a few postings that I've been seeing in a few bass forums. I don't know if the US made are more stable, or that they just tend to be newer than the imported ones. I've had the same issues with a Peavey T-40 that I have, although that's a thirty five year old bass
I just read the post below about the reinforcement rods in the US-made ones that are made of graphite. That would impart a greater level of stability to the neck.
"I have to wipe my butt every day"-Dave, 2017
I use cardboard under the pickups. Seems to work fine and doesn't disintegrate like foam.
I like my DR Hi Beams. Love the sound of those.
Thanks man. Very helpful.
Took the pickguard off Dave! You're right, it does look pretty spiffy!
I also think it looks good without the pickguard - its a shame my 5 string has a big exposed cavity or I would give it a go!
I'm thinking.....Plastic Wood & a Sharpie.....
The self-tapping-screws-into-wood pickup mounting method needs to die already.
Excellent insight Dave thanks! Constant problems with the truss rod? By a music man stingray.
Yep
I think this is quite serious design flaw, my BB614 that I setup on my own is spot on pretty much since... I set it up... and I have just bought six string bass (cheap harley benton B-650, awesome bass imo, I have no idea how they manage to make such a great instrument for that low price (or I just got lucky?)) and again... no problem since I got it in spec once (took a bit longer tho, but patience is the key when it comes to setup)
I've been thinking about one of those HB FanFret-5B basses.
I'd expect a bit of a rough finish but I'd like to give fan frets a try and you have to live with a change like that for a while before you know if you're gonna like it or not
After getting an HB35+ recently, I was pleasantly surprised how nice she was; even better after a fret dressing ;^)
ya Dave... I got an old Cort from 1984 needs a adjustment every two weeks....and a shit every day
Hey dave have you ever tried using the type of foam that comes with pickups and then cutting down some guitar pickup springs and putting them under the pickup? Thats what I do, so that I don't need to add foam every time I want to raise up my pickups and theres still foam down there so theres nothing rattling around causing problems.
Dave did do that on a bass repair three or four years ago and I've had good luck with doing that.
Fuckinay! We love you Dave!
Even when your drunk you do good work Dave ;)
Hey. Get your facts straight. Also, you're failing your English studies.
Drunk Dave is my Fave Dave.
Dear Dave, would Graphite Reinforcement Rods in the neck help alleviate some of this problem that you talked about here with the neck becoming a banana? Thank you for any response.
Geddy your bass is gutched!!!!
I replace the foam with springs, I get them from the company that rhymes with dew hack
Why are they sending it in just for a truss rod adjustment?
My first Fender, waaaaay back.. '73 at a guess; I carved the scratch plate to get at the truss rod easier. (Musicmaster !!! Big Wow)
Just seemed to make sense.
Sure you don't truss rod every day but having to whip the neck off to do it is just pants ...
What`s the problem with Badass II bridge on Geddy Lee Jazz Bass? Strings E and A doesn`t fit magnet rods at all.
Maybe you could use some small plastic bins Dave for your small tools & parts.Just "attack" them to the wall.Yes,"attack" them to the wall.LoL
Dave i admire your patience, i wanted to put heavier gauge rotosounds on my other Steve Harris signature today and i had to adjust the truss rod so many freaking times (neck on neck off) then adjusting the saddles on the bridge then adjusting the truss rod again etc.etc.cos for whatever reason they gave Steves new signature bass a thinner neck then the lovely neck that is on the blue one, after all was said and done it took me 4 hours and i wanted to throw the fucking thing in a box i still dont think the shit is right, is it okay for a neck to have a very slight forward bow in the middle? The strings are very heavy gauge, thanks for all you do.
yes maybe but it also came with a pack of the RS Steve Harris signature strings!...
I had the same issue. Just wound up selling mine.
It actually looks pretty nice without the pickguard.
funnily enough, I have purchased a dead man's pick collection for $ 2 American
Looks way cooler without the pickguard
also best way to grab one of your shirts?
My question is thus: is Dave talking about the necks needing constant adjustment on just the Geddy Jazzes or all Jazzes in general?
The Geddy Lee basses have a thin neck. It plays nice but bends like a banana . I put .040- .100 gauge strings on mine and have had no more problems.
So why did you disable the likes and dislikes?
Kennis Russell yeah but you can't see the numbers
Doesn't look disabled to me.
Daniel Baber Apparently someone has no idea how UA-cam works yet.....
Daniel Baber Like fucking hell mate what it means is that the like/dislike ratio has been disabled.
Jordan Gallaher you didn't say the ratio though in your original comment although most people would infer that after looking at the likes and dislikes
I think I would want to put a clear pickguard on that bass.
I can't believe they STILL use baby parts on guitars. I thought we got past all that.
Actually looks nicer without the pick guard.
why would a 70s style neck need to be adjusted every day? I thought those were like cricket bats.
I hate my 80's MIJ strat. The truss rod need adjustments...F-it, it cant stay in the case
for another 35 years.
this guy said "I have to wipe my butt everyday, so I'm gonna cut the seat out of my pants and boxers!" BRILLIANT!!
Get the USA model. They have graphite reinforcement bars in the neck. You set it and that shit STAYS.
You do realize that these Posi-Flex graphite bars are independent of the truss rod and are only there for stability?
Well, the one's I buy do! It is a high-end feature - Sadowky's and USA Lakland's also have this. It really does make a difference.
What do you think of flat wound RotoSound bass strings?
tone is in your hands
Ps i heard that rotosound 66 can eat your frets, Is that true?
Eee gadds. Why foam? Why?
The polymers migrate. The foam turns into baby parts.
Use springs...on the Tele neck pickup, on the Gold top P-90s, on the bass pickups... use SPRINGS.
(the polymers are migrating as we speak)
Admiral Quality Hey Whiz Boy, spring rattle is inaudible if your amplifier is working at it's optimum musical tonality. Maybe you should think about playing your ELECTRIC guitar with some friends.
Admiral Quality In what world of absolute purity do you live ? It is clear to see you have no clue to what MoJo is because your head deep within your own backside. Go wash your hands again Richard.
Vv.y..t
Maybe that Peter Pan critter is Michael Jackson's spirit... Fuckin creepy, no?
Deja Mu.
Better than Vu?
Cheers dave. That scratch guard is fucking awful mate.
The neck isn't straight either.
Well, dude is methuselah, it can be worse.
You gotta be from canuckistan because you talk just like me
I think Dave hates the Geddy bass.
Is this guy drinking before he made this video?
15:50...did you really just use the word "ganglion" in your vid?? +1
Its not easy to work that word into a conversation
REBUILD HISTORIC "LESTUDIO" CANADA YEH!!!!!!!! EH!
Este choninhas não percebe pívia desta merda, está totalmente a Leste ahahah! No fim, o pobre baixo tem as cordas todas desviadas... Este gajo é um grande técnico, sem dúvida. Clap him! :-)
on the booze again dave
I've mentioned this before but I have guitars that are fifty years old and older and have NEVER had to adjust the truss rod. Dave says it's because they were made with older wood. I can't imagine having to adjust a truss rod that often just to maintain playability. Fender should be ashamed.
jltrem in my opinion, someone messed with the pick up height after Dave set it up... also the pick guard is hogged out for easy access to the truss rod. I don't feel like its out of the question that maybe the same rocket scientist that played with the pickups also adjusted the neck... just an opinion. people who mess with guitars that a tech set up should be known as gooch-bags... can I patent that?
Copyright(C) maybe
That bass needs no pick guard
P.U. Height varies,...on each individual, Bass, Cheers!
Tee many martunies....😜
yay rotos
I think this is the first time I have heard truss rod adjustment being compared to anal hygiene. It is not an analogy I will be using myself
Hoopazero you need to try hello rushing, or sphincterine
tushie....hello tushie....portable hydrant for the poop chute
nice work dave... you sound pretty Molson'd up..j basses suck.....
scene -no re- no.... lmao
SELL YOUR JB BUY A MM!!!!
Yeppers
If I can do brain surgery with a spoon, there's no reason at all a spoon can't work on a Phillips screw head, right?
Love your videos but please, everyone, stop calling them J basses and P basses. It's not so hard, and it doesn't use up any unnecessary time to say Jazz and Precision. Life's not that short.
GET THE HALF-BASTARD.
i use poo spray
Are we still allowed to say fuck in the comments?
Manderson 72 v
Manderson 72 - AbsoFuckinLutely!
Throw that shirt in the trash.
Jeez Dave, I’ve never heard you complain so much in a video. Get a grip.
Fender's are junk. 10 times the price for half the craftsmanship. Corporate ideology at it's finest. Leo's rollin' in his grave.
what exactly are they 10 times the price of?
cone Hyperbole
Fenders, 10x the price of Squiers. What a ripoff.
chaisehombre are junk. 10 times the price for half the craftsmanship
Admiral Quality and you've just provided such a brilliant contribution
do not sing lol
meh a Jazz bass. 2 weak af pickups. Jaco had to crank the volume to 8 and bass knob to 10 on his amps
