  • PARALLEL II - AACHEN 1944 is a WWII Then & Now Short Film with the goal to play two films parallel to each other, creating a bridge between the war in 1945 and 2020.
    ----------------------------------
    The Battle of Aachen is one of the toughest urban Battles of World War II fought by the Americans. On October 10, 1944, General Huebner, commander of the US 1st Infantry Division 'Big Red One', delivered an ultimatum to German Forces in Aachen. They threatened to bomb the city if the German garrison did not surrender. The German commander refused.
    On October 13, 1944, the US 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division, started attacking the city center. It wasn't until October 21, that the last German garrison surrendered.

      I just wanted to say you had only one dictator, just for 15 years. You were so lucky to have the US interference. I just wanted to say I am extremely happy that you know nothing about dictatorship.❤

    I had a short stay in Aachen as a schoolboy in 1952. The ravages of the battle were still evident.... the loss in lives not seen but bullet scarred buildings, others gutted, walls missing and upper floors sagging, large bare areas where homes and shops had once been attested to the fight and it all made a deep impression on me. Germany was recovering and rebuilding.... yet in one ruin stood a field gun! Thank you for the film and the comparisons.

      I grew up in Paris. Tourist and Parisians alike do not notice the bullet holes on many monuments. But if you look for them you realize they are everywhere. Mainly on official buildings where fights were intense such as the Ecole Militaire (Champs de Mars opposite to the Eiffel Tower) Most ot those hole aren't even filled up. Two many of them.

      It's a side entrance for the Centre of Justice in Aachen. It's no longer in use, except for workmen and maintenance staff. It's known as fox burrow and the by now closed pub next to it got it's name from that entrance.
      Edit: On the iron door you can see the name of the Judicial authority "Landgericht" (regional court) - then & now.

    The M4 Sherman passing trough the Rothe-Erde Train station is an iconic shot I always liked. But for me actually born, raised and now living in Aachen myself it was stunning to see more footage of the battle of Aachen. I must say my favorite shot is the one facing down the Adalbertsteinweg with the Aachener Dom (Catherdral) in the far background (7:32).

    Extremely well done and appreciated. My wife is from Aachen and I am an American living in Germany. We are both children of world war 2 parents , whose fathers fought on opposite sides. I did live in this beautiful city for about a year. Hard to imagine the devastation that took place here. This ingenious presentation puts one closer to visualising the unimaginable. Thank you for this creative and interesting work of art and technology. The tank coming through the entrance of the train station as well as the remaining plastered Schrapnell hole was poignant and powerful.

    Thanks for the incredible video, I live in Aachen and a lot of the "scars" from the battle is still visible, the main reason for why it was such a tough battle taking Aachen was because it was the first German city that was taken by the allied forces and the majority of the German soldiers had a feeling of defending home turf which made it impossible for them to surrender (BTW the allied forces had agreed on NOT to bomb or shell the inner city (old city ) because of the historic significance of the area )

      "BTW the allied forces had agreed on NOT to bomb or shell the inner city (old city ) because of the historic significance of the area"
      I highly doubt that this was the real reason. Then why would they completely destroy the wonderful old town of Dresden in Feb '45? A time where the war was almost over, with no military target in the center of Dresden? At the same time they spared a factory that built precision ignitors for bombs in Dresden only a few km away from the old town. This building stands to this day. Makes no sense.

    • @JohnDoe-tx5hs
      @JohnDoe-tx5hs 2 роки тому +8

      @@GrandTheftChris The reason is that Aachen was (and is) the place where the first German emperor (Charlemange/Charles the Great) was crowned and had his castle, while Dresden was (and is ) just another old town without any real historical value plus Aachen is also one of the oldest (if not THE oldest) town in Germany (dating back to the Romans)

    Meine älteren Geschwister können sich mehr an diese schreckliche Zeit erinnern. Ich kenne Aachen sehr gut und danke dem Recherchern allerherzlichst für diese einmalige Dokumentation. Nicht einfach diese Orte wieder zu finden. Immer noch werden in Aachen Bombenblindgänger gefunden. Man sollte diese sehr gute Dokumentation den jungen Menschen in Aachen im Schulunterricht vorführen. @@SNAFUDOCS I’m sure you have quite a to do list, but I am so thrilled to know Bussum is on that list. Thank you! I’ve never been to Bussum. I’ve seen some photos of sentimental things, like the house they lived in until they emigrated to Australia when my mum was 4, and of course google maps is handy, but she never talked about the war because Opa had been taken into forced labour camps and had to do horrific things and any mention of it triggered nightmares for him. It’s only since they’ve both passed that I’ve felt comfortable even asking Mum a few questions about it. We just grew up knowing you do not ever mention it. He must have suffered so much.
      I have been thinking more about your video and the re-enactment parts and still can’t think of exactly the right word to describe them. The best I can come up with is they make it real. They bring it into the present.

    I was wondering about the residents and then I saw the shot of the couple with their bags walking down the street - probably the entirety of their possessions in their hands.
