i, or rather my brother, had the original "hang on sloopy" on 45. (along with "snoopy vs the red barron." and about 40 others.) i never even knew derringer rerecorded the "sloopy" song and rereleased it. i only remember one derringer song from the 70s " rock and roll hootchie koo." i'll tell you what, without lisa this video would be relegated to the trash heap of lost r&r history.
a lot of bands in the 60s and 70s produced music videos to promote their songs. but there was no place to air the videos. so they remained largely unknown and unwatched. through youtube i'm discovering many videos of my favorite songs i never knew existed.

The greatest gift rock and roll gave us is rock and roll dancing. My fondest memories of that era are of dancing with girls with that wild, carefree abandon that is so intoxicating.

For Ohio State Buckeyes, this song is permanently ingrained in your brain. Hang On Sloopy is a 'standard' for the Ohio State marching band and is played at EVERY home football game. I had the privilege of seeing this song performed live by Rick Daringer and Peter Frampton on guitar. When Frampton's guitar circus was on tour several years back, it was awesome. I grew up in that era and always wanted to see Frampton and also was a big fan of the Mccoys. So I got a double dose that night.
It was a awesome show. Unfortunately, It got cut short because of bad lightning and thunder. Frampton did not want to quit playing he was willing to stay and play. Lisa Dalton and I are exactly the same age-- I was 18 in 1974, also. I remember this song well from the day-- reflected on how it had such a '60s vibe. Yet... this was a typical '70s "Glam Rock" band! Shame we didn't get that video here in the States back then. Years later I saw the video (pirated copy from Europe? I don't know...). Anyway, that girl had moves! She was cute and she was HOT! By the time I saw that video, I also danced much like her-- just random and working with the music. (Back in 1975, well, I was just starting to learn to dance-- I kinda sucked at it! There's a learning curve. Don't let it frustrate you). I didn't. So... up until I was 65 (two years ago), I was still dancing like that-- best years of my life! Now, well, I have nerve damage in my spine and back, and just can't do it anymore. Sucks. But! Sloopy Girl lives on! Thank you, Lisa Dalton!

I still remember every Sloopy I ever dated in the 80s and 90s and the hair hanging down and tickling my nose lol. Here's to being 21 forever, whenever you were born, lol.
I think what is most remarkable about the story is that there wasn't a choreographer telling Lisa what to do. The moves are just her moving naturally to a great song. Honestly, I doubt the video could have been any better if they had brought one in. What a great natural beauty she is and her rhythm is completely on point. I can't believe this never played on MTV, which debuted just a few years later.
She was just doin' what came naturally for her.
I would also like to once again express my excitement for this beautiful dance by Lisa. She has outshone the Band McCoys with her presentation and has become the center of attention. She looks sexy and sweet and topped off her perfomance with an adorable smile to boot.

Her tank top, short shorts and hat would be just as stylish today as it was in 1975. I grew up in Agoura Hills, just a few miles from Woodland Hills, in the 70's and 80's. I grew up with actors and numerous film sites for commercials, TV and movies. I've been on TV a few times when I was a mechanic and crewchief on UH-60 Blackhawks; CNN, The History Channel, Good Morning Sacramento (KCRA3) and filmed by a French TV crew for a documentary for Army Medevac helicopters.

Dear Lisa, I was just finishing my Bachelor's degree at Cal State Long Beach in '75. Always loved that song. Then a year or so ago I saw you dancing to the tune. I'm ancient now. But I just want to say that no one could make such a rythmic dance more seductive than what you did. Perfect moves, perfect figure, and just out of the hippie era and into the disco era. You had it goin on! What an era.
