I love that five of these ladies were used for the recording of First Burn - up until now I thought it was random but it makes it so much better that they all portrayed Eliza at some point

There are a lot of theories why Eliza burned her letter. One of them is that Hamilton and Eliza were involved in some kind of financial scheme with the Reynolds and were about to get caught because the letters published in the Reynolds Pamphlet from Maria looked like they were actually written by Hamilton in an attempt to sound like an uneducated woman. The style was so similar to his own that Eliza burned her letters so they couldn't be compared to each other. But we'll never know...
I hate it when the singers have silent moments and then there are someone who will cough out loud like wtf 🙄

When COVID-19 started hitting NYC, Hamilton still had a few performances going on. How awkward do you think it was for some people when James Madison was sick on stage and coughing into a handkerchief??
As a person with really bad allergies I'm so sorry, one time I coughed when I went to see Newsies, and like I felt horrible about it.

Honestly I disagree with the “too angry” comments. I feel like anger works very well in that part they were singing and then they compose themselves into a coldness on the last line. Rachelle and Solea do this very well and I completely believe them.

However, they described Eliza as gentle and kind. So much anger in her voice just doesn't fit her character. That's why Phillipa's version is so fitting. She sounds confused, hurt and a little angry but anger is not the main emotion evoked in her rendition.
I see both sides tbh. I feel like first burn was more angry but each actress should put their own twist on the song and that might be anger
@@gabrielabernal5596 I think with this song especially it's up to each actress what she wants to do with the role. Even a gentle person can show rage in certain circumstances. The song tells us that we don't know how she reacted when she went through this painful, private moment, so you can play it a bunch of different ways and have it still make sense. Then it's just up to the audience to decide which interpretation they like more.
Solea’s performance has so much expression. I think she gave off the feeling of hurt and pain so much more than the rest

Julia Harriman is both my 2nd fav Angelica (tied with Emmy raver lampman), and one of my favorite Eliza’s.
Solea gave me chills with all the emotions she put into that. You can really feel the hurt and anger, and then the coldness at the end, wow.

I’m sorry but why is no one talking about Solea??! The moment at 3:54 when she picks up the letters and sings “the memories,” she has that slight moment of sadness cause she relives those moments for a quick second, and then goes right back into hurt and anger! Also that gaze is so strong and powerful yet subtly! I feel like there can be a lot of overacting in a song like this but she captured it just right! And her voice is phenomenal!!! She’s my fave for sure!! 😍

Your brain is more likely to remember the first time you hear something. That’s why so many us of us often favor Phillipa. It would react similarly if these other women performed as Eliza first!😊

Personally, I dont like to compare the actors to other people who play their part. I judge the actor for how well they did they're part, not how well they did they're part compared to others.
I had never heard Solea’s burn before and wow...i’m in tears. she had so much anger and disgust in her voice, she sounded so vicious and i loved it. the way she put a very tiny delay on the last ‘burn’ and then made a disgusted face was really something that made me get chills.
Solea has definitely been cheated on in real life!!

Holy sht, I did not expect Solea to be that powerful. I literally got chills.
Im torn between Phippa and Rachelle. In terms of sound, I like Phippa's better but I was looking for a bit more of anger and disgust. (you can't have your husband cheat on you and only feel sadness) Rachelle's emotion is what I think fits the song.

Rachelle's reaction is basically how I've seen everyone react to that same situation which is why it appealed to me more. dunno if I explained that right 😭

I love Solea’s raw anger. Also love Rachelle Ann Go when she takes that deep breath after the “you forfeit” section. It’s so Eliza- she takes just a second to compose herself as much as she can given the circumstances.
Pippa is the OG and I love her so much but I love Rachelle’s Burn, she sounds so angry and hurt, and Ari’s voice is so powerful, but my favorite has to be Julia Harriman, she’s incredible and you can tell that she’s feeling a lot of pain and disappointment, I cried hearing her.

Ok Solea’s control on the ending that full-on belt is AMAZING . It’s so hard to fade out of something that you’re giving that much energy gradually rather then switching from loud to soft. I think it helps lead in to the ending super well! Julia’s is amazing too, someone else said it sounds detached and I love the different takes

Julia's has the most nuance to me. It's a mix of anger, despair and pain. But her last line is calm and detached, which makes it feel ominous and almost creepy.

Yes. When I went to see Hamilton, she was the one who played Eliza. I loved her because her version had the perfect balance of sadness and anger. That’s really important in my book. If I am ever fortunate enough to play Eliza, that would be a huge priority for me when I perform Burn.

To be fair, you do realize that it took a few years before Angelica had even forgiven him. It wasn’t just a few months, but years. I love rachelle because she adds so many emotions as well as the anger. She reveals the side to herself that the audience hadn’t seen before, and for that reason, I love her so much.

That's tough. It would be easier with better sound quality, but I did like the emotion in Zoe. Still, Rachelle and Philippa both seem to have better fullness and range to their voices.
Anyway you slice it, it's a tough song, half almost sweet, half wicked angry.
Edit: I found Rachelle's full recording and I think I still like Phillipa better. I like that she ends "cold"... like she's locking it down. I feel like that's the irony of the song - anyone who was REALLY angry probably would have come out swinging, but Eliza decides to 'get even' in a very calculated way, here. I like the wistful beginning, the angry build, and the cold end.

Why did the West End Cast sound like an actual album in real life. Rachelle Ann Go definitely sounded like an album, and so did the other Schulyer sisters the end part where they hit that last high note on Schulyer sisters just sounds so amazing.

i love Zoe’s “broken and angry cinnamon roll” kinda voice, because that’s exactly what Eliza is at this point.
All of them struck a certain chord within all of us in certain ways, most likely having to do with which emotion correlates with our current circumstance. At times I’ve felt the resolute of Pippa and Ari, and at times the anger of Rachelle and Erin. This to me is the beauty of this song and the characteristics Eliza. Competition cannot apply to a work so incredibly interpretive.
However I must say, Solea’s final note in “when you were mine” cannot be outdone. (IMHO) I haven’t felt a resonance for that specific pain in a long time. Personally, her performance struck a very strong chord. How a single note can move someone in such a strong way is exactly what Lin Manuel intended in creating the masterpiece.

Okay, of course we all love Philippa. However, we need to be talking about Solea and Shoba!! They both sounded incredible. I wish I could have seen Shoba act. She is a star! Her voice just melts the soul. It’s special. It’s angelic yet can be powerful too! Solea gave me chills. She was IN that character. I loved her interpretation. It was powerful! I also really enjoyed Sharon Rose’s voice, especially the power and chest mix in the bridge!

I definitely think you fall in love with the Eliza you see first. For most of the world, including myself,, that has become Phillipa. Along with being the one to originate the role, she’s the only one most people have access to.

Solea is the best because she is actually experiencing pain, anger, and hurt. And I love how she becomes resigned by the end. Actinggggg over pretty singing all day. Phillipa has a beautiful voice but isn’t actually going through anything. She’s just sorta suggesting that she’s angry and it’s boring. I also prefer Solea’s voice.
In my opinion, I like Phillipas better for the roll because I feel like Elizas character is very soft and innocent and naive and Soo’s soft tone really encompasses that. Solea has an out of this world voice but in my opinion, granted i haven’t seen her entire performance as the characters, it makes Eliza seem more bold and independent because of he strong tone and I’ve never gotten that vibe from her character. Just my opinion though and wanted to share. Both are unbelievably talented 💕
In my opinion, I think Solea has too much anger in her voice. I like Pippa's better because she maintains the fact that Eliza's character was so innocent in the beginning that she's hurt and confused, as well as angry. I feel like that sets it up better for the forgiveness, but I also think she just projects the character and emotions better. (Pls don't attack me this is just my opinion)
THE LAST CLIP DOES NOT DO SHARON ROSE JUSTICE, I SAW HER BEFORE THE PANDEMIC AND SHE WAS HONESTLY AMAZING, HER VOICE WAS ANGELIC AND SHE BROUGHT THE ENTIRE THEATRE TO TEARS. Her Eliza portrayal in all was IMPECCABLE, LIKE SERIOUSLY AMAZING.

Honestly, I liked some of these Eliza's more than Phillipa! Especially Solea, Rachel, Julia and Sharon. I think they better showed the anger and betrayal Eliza was feeling in that moment. I never felt that as much as I personally wanted from Phillipa. It also always felt like Phillipa kind of resented and disliked the role of Eliza because of many of the comments she made about the part in interviews and I definitely feel like I saw that lack of motivation shine through when watching the recording on Disney+. I like the fullness and arch of emotions some of these other Eliza's gave more!

1 Eliza, 1 song, 1 story, but they all sound different as if they portray different traits/characters of women. There was one of them who sounds like an abusive wife and found out that his husband cheated on her. There was one who sounds like a battered wife who decided to stay in a marriage she knows that would not work. Better to just list it down 3. A perfect wife 4. A wife who knows what what her husband was doing and only decided to complain when the issues came out to public 5. A wife who seemed forced to marry the guy 6. A paranoid wife as if she only knew the news from a friend 7. A wife who is having a nervous breakdown 8. A wife who is ready for a divorce anytime.

I saw the Phillip tour during Erin Clemons reign and I distinctly remember all three sisters being truly beyond compare to anyone else in the show. Nysa was fantastically double sided, Ta’rea had such power and Erin made Eliza feel almost weak in her ending? Not sure how to explain it but there was so much vulnerability while still being loud and angry
I saw Erin too and she certainly did not disappoint!
Even comparing the few videos that there are I love the way Pippa disposes of the letters into the fire. Not only is her voice full of emotion, but you can hear the hurt in her voice and she looks as though she doesn’t want to let go of the letters and hesitates. Brilliant.

This was 4 or 5 days ago but PHILLIPA IS THE OG ELIZA SHE IS THE QUEEN SHE WINS THE OG ELIZA
She is the OG, but that doesn’t mean she’s the “best” best Eliza. Each woman has her own flair to add to the character. All these women had to audition for this role so clearly, each woman was amazing enough to be a part of this :) each woman is extremely talented.
