Awesome trip down memory lane! I can't believe you've left out classics like Civilization, Warcraft, Heroes of Might and Magic, Colonization, Sensible Soccer, Warlords, Commander Keen and some I've probably forgot... Well, at least they were a huge part of my childhood and many of those games have lived on and sees sequels to this day.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! There are so many great DOS games, it's hard to cover them all. I'm starting a more in-depth series soon where I'll be covering a lot more games.
Im surprised Daggerfall wasnt on here. I still play it today lmao. It even made it into the Guiness World Records for having the largest pre rendered map.
Agree with most of the Titles you listet so far. Yes i've played Blockout in the early 90s. My mother used to play it daily over years, so it was her favorite game for a very long time. For me personally it isn't a title "still worth playing" today, but i can't get really excited about Tetris-Like games for long.
I didn't realize you had a second list! Anyway this just gives me some extra recommendations of nice oldies I might have missed and should try some time! So much to catch up with!
Your videos are awesome and for the first time I don't feel like an idiot for not knowing 80% of the games features. I've intensively played all 15 games and I agree with you, these are games not to forget!
Holy hell Pete! Didn't realize until now how well these DOS videos had done for you. That's fantastic, awesome to see your channel growing so rapidly! Very much deserved.
Descent and Tyrian were the first two pc games I ever played as a little kid. I must have burned hundreds of hours on those two games alone. Glad to see they made this list!
Might&Magic 4+5. Having both of them made it possible to merge them, and getting extra content called World of Xeen. As originals i think they were called Clouds of Xeen and Darkside of Xeen. Also can recommend trying out Death Gate, a point and click game. May be hard (impossible?) to get as floppy though. Same with another gem called Lands of Lore.
Another great selection Pete, some absolute classics and a few I've actually played, although admittedly on other platforms. A lot of them I played on my mates Amiga, Jimmy Whites Snooker was a favourite, I can remember him having a hooky version of Rick Dangerous as well.
Thanks Owen! Many of them I played on Amiga too. I spent hours and hours on Jimmy White's with my mate, we were addicted to that game! Rick Dangerous is awesome, I have a dodgy Russian hack of it for Mega Drive.
Awesome as always Pete :) Chuffed Jimmy whites whirlwind snooker Got a mention, I put so many hours into the Amiga port, no snooker/pool game could touch that back in the day
Fantastic trip down memory lane Pete. I loved Duke Nukem and I played it a lot with friends. Even carried my pc over, including screen, to play it "online" with him. I was just so overwhelmed by the fact that Descent existed and ran on my pc. I thought it was a hard game, but that was because I kept getting lost.
Thanks Wouter, glad it stirred up some fond memories. Haha that's dedication right there if you did all that to play Duke Nukem "online". Descent was such a great concept, I loved it.
I remember finding so many glitches in GTA, like duplicating the player, running under the maps terrain, randomly exploding cars, driving with a destroyed car and other random stuff. Settlers gives me such nostalgia, I remember watching my brother play it on Amiga. Nowadays I still play Settlers 2
I don't remember many glitches myself. I need to play Settlers again, it's been ages. Never played the later ones in the series (I forget how many they made in the end).
As always another great and very well put together video mate , lemmings will never ever get boring I'm always playing this on the PSp such a top game, and fair play on the nearly 40k views on the last vid you should be getting way more, you put loads of time and passion into it and it really shows in your vids. Hope all good with you my friend and have a great week.
Thanks Ben! Glad you liked it. I know right, that video is over 40K views now and going up thousands every day, mental. Much appreciated. Hope you have a good one too mate!
Yes! More DOS games. This is my teenage-hood right here. I'm on board with Carmageddon, Grand Theft Auto, Prince of Persia, Duke Nukem 3D, Lemmings and Mega-lo-Mania. I've only ever seen the TurboGrafx CD version of It Came From The Desert. Such a bad version, lol. I like the look of Rick Dangerous, Descent and Tyrian. Good video, Pete :)
Thanks Jojo, ha this is my teens in a nutshell here too. Rick Dangerous, Descent, and Tyrian are all excellent games, and very different. Apparently Tyrian 2000 is free on gog.com (link in description).
Thanks Steve! Rick Dangerous is awesome, I first played that one on Amiga. And so happy to have discovered Tyrian (relatively recently as I said). Tyrian 2000 is free on gog.com if you're interested.
Some great ones here for sure. Micro machines was crazy on dos/NES. Also don't forget Raptor: Call of The Shadows (now updated in 2015 for steam as it is so good).
Liked the video. This may have been suggested already but if not I really enjoyed the Quest for Glory series 1-4. There is a 5th one though it wasnt available in DOS. They are point and click adventure/role playing games you might like
Thanks! I never really got on with Sierra's adventure games as much as LucasArts'. Maybe because they could be very unforgiving and I was quite young, but perhaps I should revisit some of them.
No problem : ) Yeah the potential for dead ends is annoying and there are a number of bugs in each game. I still really enjoyed them despite that all because of the storyline and gameplay. One of the things i thought was cool was how the solution to a lot of the game puzzles depended on your class, skills, and even how skilled you are. For instance there is one puzzle where a magic user could use two different spells to solve but one is harder because it takes more skill at the spell in order to succeed. Powering up a magic user is a LOT more tedious admittedly but i still liked that class the most. If you do decide to play though I highly recommend making a lot of "checkpoint" save files
List of Games : Carmageddon Grand Theft Auto Prince of persia Duke Nukem 3D Descent Sam n max hit the road Hexen jimmy whites whirlwind snooker Lemmings Mega Lo Mania Rick Dangerous the settlers Tyrian IT Desert micromachines
onaretrotip haha my nostalgia sense is tingling... ive only seen two of your videos but liked the both, always good to find new up and coming youtubers 👍... also good call on lemmings, had completely forgotten that game
onaretrotip Thanks for reminding me about all these games! im trying to set up a games computer with some older games for my son and i needed ideas. making the list was a bit selfish, so i can go back later and look at the list myself hehe. cheers man!
Mad, ace stuff. Wow I remember some of these now having completely forgot about them (Sam and Max!) I've been meaning to check out the old stuff to do a vid and I'll use this as a guide.
"Wolfpack" from Broderbound was a major staple of my youth. While games like the Silent Hunter series may be more detailed simulations, nothing else has let you run multiple submarines in a coordinated attack. Microprose produced a number of my other go to games - F-19 Stealth Fighter, M1 Tank Platoon. and Gunship 2000. The Manuals alone were often as good as the games, giving technical and historical background on the simulation's subject.
Not heard of Wolfpack, thanks for the recommendation! The simulators always had the most in-depth manuals, some of them were like having a manual for an actual plane.
Another game that could have entered the list is Full Throttle, which is in my opinion the best point & click of the era. Amazing art, cool bikes, amazing voice work and great songs.
Great game, although not my favourite LucasArts adventure. I'm pretty much a fan of anything that Tim Schafer's involved in. Are you looking forward to Double Fine's remaster in 2017?
I can't find any other reference to it here, but one of the best puzzle games I ever played (on any format) is called 'Trugg'. The game concept is along similar lines to the excellent 8 bit 'Boulder Dash'. Worth searching out, although sound can be a problem since it was tied to ancient sound cards. This does not restrict the fun though, it just makes things silent.
ua-cam.com/video/2ji4V415QYY/v-deo.html I have the full - extended - set of Trugg, bought at the time from the producers of the game. Most players have seen only the shareware version shown here (fully playable). It's very tough at the extended levels!
The shareware levels are under the 'Cyberium' batch name. There are three additional batches of levels, called 'Conquistador', 'Nebulari' and 'Spirithouse'. Also available at the time were 'Netmare' and 'Trugg junior'. I am pretty certain I have junior, although I can't remember for certain!
Great List! One of my favorites: Archimedian Dynasty (Schleichfahrt). The atmosphere was just great. Another game which plays on the Android DOS-box like a native game: Master of Magic. All controls work great on the phone touch screen. Try it out!
Thanks! I've not played either of those. Didn't realise Master of Magic had an android emulator version, I'll try that. I like the old DOS/Amiga games that work well with touchscreen.
+onaretrotip Master of Magic doesn't have an emulator. But you can use Android DosBox Turbo to play it like a native game. Buttons are big enough, navigation works without any problems and it's turn-based. So you don't have to hurry and can interrupt at any time.
Absolutely! I still play Cannon Fodder occasionally on my Amiga 1200, but haven't played X-Wing for a good while. I'd love to see a good modern reboot of the series!
I think I played mostly all of these... also there is a doom triple pack now online where You play Doom, Heretic, &/or Hexen via Computer Internet Browser...
My first PC (1994) still works fine (running Win98) and I still play Doom, Quake, Blood, and Duke Nukem 3D. Lots of fun with surround sound and a 42 inch monitor.
Panzer General came out 1995ish? Best selling wargame of all time when it came out... may still hold that record as wargame as as a genre have died out. It’s worth a look-see. It’s a VERY good game and spawned a number of sequels. It’s got a spiritual successor in Panzer Corps, and Panzer Corps 2 is scheduled to come out soon, so still going strong.
Great selections there Pete. Although I've played quite a few of these games the only one I've actually played on DOS is Jimmy White's Whirlwind snooker and that's cos my I.T teacher at school had it and let us play on it if we finished our projects early lol. Games like Carmeddon & GTA I spent hours on, on the Playstation. Hexen I have on Saturn so will give it blast.
Thanks Adam! Haha that's awesome that your IT teacher let you play Jimmy White's, I played that for hours on end with my mate, we were addicted to it. Carmageddon and GTA are way better on PC than console, and I've not played Hexen on Saturn but I'd imagine it's the same situation. Hopefully still enjoyable though! I think I own it on Saturn in fact.
Zilliard, Skate Or Die, Mean Streets, Rampage, All the Commander Keens, Cosmos Cosmic Adventure, CAPTAIN COMIC! Cartooners, Out of This World, MDK, the first Duke Nukems, Bioshock, Worms and Wormplus, Day of The Triad, Humans, Man there are toooo many to mention!
Another well-crafted list :). Here are a few more random suggestions: One Must Fall: 2097, great fighting game. Another World, like others have said, but also Flashback. Police Quest 2, Space Quest 2 and 3, Leisure Suit Larry 2 and 3. Beneath a Steel Sky! Elite. Deja Vu 2.
sherlock holmes, the case of the serrated scalpel albion flashback and its sequel fade 2 black captain comic warcraft 1 & 2 another world just to add some of the amazing games i grew up with that still deserve playing =)
Fantastic list! Not only games worth playing on DOS, but these are games worth playing in general! No cluse what Snooker is, so that must be something exclusive to the UK? It's interesting how many of these games did get console ports too.
Thanks, Church. Yeah, many of these got console ports - some great and some awful. Snooker is a game like pool (do you call it pool in North America?) but the table is much much bigger and so is much harder. A great game, that I like to watch and also play once a week when I can.
Yep we call it pool (weird I know). I dig the challenge, so Snooker might be something I'll have to keep an eye out for. Any time I go out for drinks and there's a pool table around, you better believe I'm playing.
Oh, we call it pool as well. I used to play a lot of pool when I used to drink regularly, but play mostly snooker these days. Snooker is far more challenging and skillful (I'm rubbish at it).
Thanks for this terrific retro tour of MS DOS games! I'm trying to recall a platform type game I'd played that I think was made in the mid 90's. It was similar to Lode Runner in that you'd have to traverse a screen to escape, and pick up items long the way. But it was different in that you could leap upwards to reach floating platforms, instead of bound by using ladders. You could also leave a level without collecting everything (but you'd lose the bonus). Does that game ring a bell?
Think I missed this comment, sorry for the late reply. Hmm, I'm not sure I'm afraid. Sounds like there could be quite a few 90s games that fit that description. Anything else you can remember about it?
Yeah, I do a lot of console stuff but lately I've felt the same as you, DOS and Amiga stuff is getting neglected. I'll do a top 50 Amiga games at some point but it'll take aaaaaages. Yes indeed, Jazz Jackrabbit was awesome!
Damn shame the Amiga never was big in the States. Seems like such a cool PC with great games. Jazz Jackrabbit was one of the few sidescrollers on DOS and it was actually good. There is a cool windows program called Open Jazz where you can play Jazz Jackrabbit in Windows and at high resolutions. Keep up the good work!
Great videos. I'll also mention Dune, Blood, The Horde, Rebel Assault, Dark Forces, M&M 6, Myst, Incredible Machines, Terminal Velocity and many more... Cheers!
Thanks! Not played Blood, Terminal Velocity, or M&M. Myst was a Windows game, wasn't it? Dark Forces was on my list in the first video, love that game.
It was? My bad, don't know how I missed it. Myst was a Windows game, my bad also, got caught up in the moment...! You gotta play Blood mate, it's awesome (I LIVE... AGAIN). Also (although it's Windows I guess), have you played Chaos Overlords? One of my all time favs. You'll definitely love it. Space Hulk? That first Dune game? And many more...
Descent and Doom were the bomb while I was in college! We ran network cables through the ceiling, out the windows, and anywhere we could to get the full 64 people playing at once! Lost a few days with those games.
Gaming didn't get much better than those games, Steve! I didn't play them multiplayer until years later at gaming expos, but that sounds amazing. You obviously went to great lengths!
Original Doom most definitely didn't have support for 64 people multiplayer. Your thinking about some port. iirc it was 4 players for Doom 1 and 8 for Doom 2.
Check out "scorch" or "scorched earth"... can't remember the correct name precisely, but it was a precursor to the early Worms series, but with tanks and really basic. Had great fun with that. Also, Xenon 2...
Anyone remember the name of a cirkus game for MS DOS where you had to dive into a glass of water? Was out around the same time as The incredible Machine and Prince of Persia.
It Came from the Desert, remember it well. It was released before the PC overtook the Amiga graphically as the Amiga version looked a lot better and sound wise too if I am not mistaken. A sequel was released called Antheads. I liked a lot of Cinemaware games from the Amiga era.
Most games from the 80s and early 90s were better on Amiga to be honest. Huge Amiga fan here (my favourite system). I was a big fan of Cinemaware at the time too.
Games that ate my life : any game by Sid Meier, Pirates (version available on IOS), Master of Orion, Master of Orion 2 (but not 3), Covert Action, Samurai. But one of the best is Empire. One of the first games that made you say I'll just play one more turn (actually play for 20 turns)
Love your pick of my all time favorite, Descent! As you most likely know, it was followed by Descent 2 and 3 and Now......Descent Underground. I'm not sure of the status of Underground, but I believe that it even has a VR option. Check it out. Cheers.
Some games from those two vids I actually knew - or even still play in DOS-Box emulators or Steam ports! However, there's one game you left off the list - or two, anyway. Both the Little Big Adventure games! (aka Twinsen's Adventure/Odyssey... named Relentless in some countries like the US) Great action-adventure stuff from DOS that I still play and recently they even got a Steam release!
in addition to both this and preceding lists i would recommend: Gobliiins (aka gob3), Transport tycoon (de Luxe), Microprose's Grand Prix 2 (by Geoff Carmond), Fallout & Fallout 2, Mortal Kombat II, the incredible machine & T.I.M. 2
@@onaretrotip no worries mate - allways happy to share the lovbe of games, T.I.M. has been very emblematic of my young gaming years. It is sad the game mostly forgotten today.
Oh DESCENT, how I miss you. I bugged my mother for months to get a Joystick until she finally did! Only the game was not as smooth as it is on the video, back then on my 386 desktop.
great list. Sam n max was such a good game ! in the 90's I have played Sid Meier pirates! a lot. And my brother and I played Microprose Grand Prix for hours too. Graphics does not matter, sometimes...:-)
Thanks, Kris! Yeah, Sam & Max is brilliant fun, and I love the humour. Graphics certainly aren't of paramount importance if the gameplay is good, and many of these DOS games are testament to that fact.
What I think is missing from the two lists is(and I am PRETTY sure they were DOS...) are Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe by Lucas Arts, and AV8B Harrier, by Domark. Am I right?
Not sure about the latter, but Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe definitely was. A guy that worked as a playtester back in those days at LucasArts commented on my LucasArts Developer Spotlight video, and had some interesting stories about the games, including Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. That was cool!
Although I'm a fan of old DOS games, I have to say that Lemmings on DOS just cant stand up to the Acorn Archimedes version, maybe it's the memories I have from playing it on the school's Archimedes back in the day, but that version defined Lemmings for me, the Amiga version is pretty good too.
Master of Magic should definitely be on the list. There have been some spiritual remakes of it in recent years but they haven't actually been better than the original.
I'm sad to see that my two favorite DOS games didn't make either list! Wing Commander's Privateer, an awesome sandbox flight simulator with a great story. Also a trading game, buy low and sell high. Released in 1993. Also, Sid Meier's Colonization, very addictive... I still play it when I want to fast forward my day. Released in 1994
Brilliant video my man! Really enjoy another DOS and remember fondly of most! Mind you prince of Persia looks stunning as! Is this on Steam I wonder? Think you might have to do a third video to satisfy the moaners who didn't see there favourite game on the list lol! 😂😂😂
Thanks Luke! Prince of Persia is stunning, especially considering it was released in 1989. Not sure if it's on Steam, be careful you don't buy the recent (2008ish) one which has the same name. If not, there's always DOSBox, or it's on PSN as 'Prince of Persia Classic' (or at least it was). A third video? I'd have to do twenty more at this rate ffs hahaha!
I don't know whether or not you have played either but what about One Must Fall 2097 or Castle of the Winds (I think that was the official name). OMF was my all time favorite DOS games as it combined two aspects of games I loved in the 90s....Finishing Moves and Robots. Castle of the Winds was a good top down dungeon crawler game that if I am remembering correctly combined elements of Dungeons and Dragons
Two games I like to kick is the true grandfather of RTS games: Supremacy: thy will be done. which is also known as overlord. Very deep gameplay, but also, the soundtrack was made by the god of chiptunes, jeron tel. Another I like is called Iron seed. Try to find the latest version that makes the game slightly easier.
Duke Nukem 3D was hella lot of fun multiplayer. Descent was a lot of fun. Prince of Persia was ridiculously difficult (dunno that I ever beat it). And though I played the majority of these, I will end on the Lemmings. Old game but it was a lot of fun.
Don't think I ever played Duke Nukem multiplayer, or any of the early first-person shooters for that matter. Don't think I ever beat Prince of Persia either, damn it was hard. Lemmings is great, that can be pretty hard on the later levels too!
I was never really into the Sierra adventure games, perhaps due to their difficulty. I was more of a LucasArts guy. I did briefly dabble in Leisure Suit Larry though.
I can go re-find the link and give it to you if that makes a difference. It's admittedly not the *easiest* DOS game out there to find the shareware version of IIRC...
I was able to find multiple, but I'll just give you one to keep things simple (it's from a fan-site, but if archive.org is anything to go by, they actually linked to this one on the official website as an alternative option to the official link way back when): www.omfuniverse.tk/downloads/OMF21CD.zip
A few that are definitely worth mentioning: Protostar - War on the Frontier Quest for Glory: So You Want To Be a Hero Leisure Suit Larry in the Lands of the Lounge Lizards Stunts (by Broderbund software) SimAnt Pizza Tycoon Theme Hospital Rollecoaster Tycoon Ports of Call
Well, a quick rundown on these game: - Protostar A game loosely based on the Star Trek franchise. Earth is under siege by an alien race called the Skeetch and you've been tasked to sneak through the enemy lines to the Thule Sector, an area of space between Earth's sector and Skeetch space. The sector is inhabited by 4 sentient species and also hosts a human trade company called Newfront. You are supposed to act as the captain of a Newfront spaceship, gathering resources to sell, so you can wire funds back to Earth for the defense of earth, while in the mean time trying to befriend the 4 sentient species, building an alliance to cut off Skeetch supply lines. You'll be looking for crewmembers so your ship will function more efficiently, upgrading your ship with better weapons, shielding and engines, gathering resources and fighting Skeetch and pirates in an expansive sector, filled with over a hundred solar systems. - Quest for Glory Originally known as Hero's Quest, this is a VGA remake. It's an RPG where you're an adventurer that has traveled through the mountains to a town called Spielburg, seeking glory as a hero. You can choose one of three classes of persona's at the start of the game (warrior, magic user, thief) and the class that you choose will affect the accesibility of certain parts of the game (if I'm not mistaken, only the thief can gain access to the Thieves' guild). You have a number of skills that you can improve, but they don't improve through some leveling system, instead they improve by using the specific skill (climbing improves by climbing, stealth improves by sneaking). There's a lot of great humor in the game and the team hasn't spared itself on mockery. - SimAnt From the creators of SimCity came SimAnt, basically, you run an ant colony and you can control one ant to dig a nest and gather food while waging war on the red ants and trying to dodge the spider. - Pizza Tycoon Management type of game where you can run your own chain of pizza restaurants. You have to manage hiring, firing and training staff to work in your restaurant, manage supplies, create your own pizza recipes, compete in pizza challenges with other pizza restaurant owners (where you have to recreate the pizza that they show you how to make in advance as accurately as possible) and manage property. However, in the mean while you can improve your status both in the eyes of the general public and in the shadows, growing out to be a kingpin in crime by trading in weapons and sabotaging your opponents. - Theme Hospital Great game where you build your own hospital to treat patients. Great humor, where people come in with conditions like "bloated head" with the puncturing and reinflating of the head as treatment and more of such ailments. - Rollercoaster Tycoon Build your own theme park with a heavy emphasis on building rollercoasters - Ports of Call Manage your own shipping company. You need to buy and sell ships and use them to ship freights across the globe. In some situations you may be called upon to steer the ship yourself to maneuvre though reefs or between ice bergs or to dock the ship in the harbour.

You're making me all nostalgic with these old games. Makes me want to put together an old PC.
Ha! Mission accomplished. Thank you.
Tyrian!!! This game is absolutely AMAZING!!! ❤
So good! :)
Im surprised Daggerfall wasnt on here. I still play it today lmao. It even made it into the Guiness World Records for having the largest pre rendered map.
Shamefully the first Elder Scrolls game I ever played was Skyrim, I was never into RPGs back in the day. Wow, didn't know that about the map!
Agree with most of the Titles you listet so far.
Some of my favorites are still missing:
- Ultima Underworld 1+2
- UFO Enemy Unknown
- XCOM Terror from the Deep
- Wing Commander 1+2+3 & Privateer
- Dungeon Keeper 1+2
- Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis
- Dune (Virgin Games)
- Anvil of Dawn
- WarCraft II
- Master of Orion II
- Full Throttle
- Flashback
Wow, I've only played four of those! Thanks for the recommendations.
What about Blockout (or 3D-Tetris as people called it)? -that was really big in 1989-1990 where I live.
Too many games and not enough time!
Your videos are awesome and for the first time I don't feel like an idiot for not knowing 80% of the games features. I've intensively played all 15 games and I agree with you, these are games not to forget!
Thank you very much! There are so many great DOS games it's hard to choose.
Holy hell Pete! Didn't realize until now how well these DOS videos had done for you. That's fantastic, awesome to see your channel growing so rapidly! Very much deserved.
I know, right! The first one has gone mental, can't believe it. Thanks very much, Ryan.
Descent and Tyrian were the first two pc games I ever played as a little kid. I must have burned hundreds of hours on those two games alone. Glad to see they made this list!
That's awesome. Great games. I played a lot of Descent back in the day, but only discovered Tyrian a few years ago.
Raptor was another great shoot em up. Never played Tyrian.
Not played any Might & Magic games, but they seem to be regarded highly.
I've enjoyed both these videos so far, thanks very much!
That's good to hear. Thank you very much, Matthew!
Legend of Kyrandia series! My personal favorite point and clicks.
Looks awesome! I've never played them, but big fan of Westwood Studios.
I got them on GOG.com recently
Awesome as always Pete :)
Chuffed Jimmy whites whirlwind snooker Got a mention, I put so many hours into the Amiga port, no snooker/pool game could touch that back in the day
Thanks Ben! Yeah, me too, I played it to death on the Amiga and on PC. What's funny is that no snooker game can touch it even to this day!
Excellent list Pete, thoroughly enjoyed this!
Thanks Mark! Still really hard to pick fifteen, even though it's my second video. So glad you enjoyed it.
First time I experienced Tyrian was as a GOG sign-up freebie, as Tyrian 2000. Great game!
Yeah, that's awesome. It's still free on GOG I believe.
Good stuff mate. Some great games there and one or two I’ve not seen before
Thank you!
Some great games there Pete and another highly polished video !! Top stuff as per usual mate :)
Thanks a lot, Dal!
Still no mention of Sid Meier's Civilization.
"Just one more turn."
Afraid not :(
Damn it, I love this videos, they make me want to build a time machine out of egg boxes just to be able to relive some of this awesome experiences.
Thank you, glad you're enjoying them! Hahaha, do it.
Honestly, this list is much better than the first one, IMO.
Glad you approve!
I whole heartedly agree, you well deserve the views. Great job, & highly entertaining👍
Michael Moorlock Thank you so much, Michael. Much appreciated.
Another awesome video pete man I forgot all about cArmageddon loved that game
Thanks Scott! Carmageddon was awesome mate, I played that to death.
another top vid dude :) some cracking games on there. I love the look of Rick dangerous and tyrian. I would of loved them back in the day
Thanks Steve! Rick Dangerous is awesome, I first played that one on Amiga. And so happy to have discovered Tyrian (relatively recently as I said). Tyrian 2000 is free on gog.com if you're interested.
onaretrotip cheers Pete il check that out soon as I set tylers pc up :)
Some great ones here for sure. Micro machines was crazy on dos/NES. Also don't forget Raptor: Call of The Shadows (now updated in 2015 for steam as it is so good).
👌
Yessssssss. Descent was (and still is) amazing!
Damn right! :)
Great stuff dude and you reminded me that I used to play Settlers 2 quite a bit back in the day. Not a bad little game.
Great vid and list :)
Don't know if you were aware, but they released a 10 year anniversery version of that game a few years back. I do still prefer the old one though.
Thanks Mat! The Settlers was awesome dude, glad the video brought back some memories.
ah no I didn't know that. Thanks. I'll have to get back into PC gaming at some point
I haven't thought about Descent in years. I was obsessed with that game! I didn't get motion sickness but I definitely got disoriented. Good list.
Me too, Bill. I absolutely loved that game. I didn't get motion sickness thankfully, but yeah it could be disorienting. Thanks!
If you do decide to play though I highly recommend making a lot of "checkpoint" save files
gaddyric Thanks for the advice!
List of Games :
Carmageddon
Grand Theft Auto
Prince of persia
Duke Nukem 3D
Descent
Sam n max hit the road
Hexen
jimmy whites whirlwind snooker
Lemmings
Mega Lo Mania
Rick Dangerous
the settlers
Tyrian
IT Desert
micromachines
Thanks! I'll pin this comment.
onaretrotip haha my nostalgia sense is tingling... ive only seen two of your videos but liked the both, always good to find new up and coming youtubers 👍... also good call on lemmings, had completely forgotten that game
Cluckery Duckery Thanks very much! Glad you're enjoying the videos.
onaretrotip
Thanks for reminding me about all these games! im trying to set up a games computer with some older games for my son and i needed ideas. making the list was a bit selfish, so i can go back later and look at the list myself hehe. cheers man!
You're very welcome! That's awesome that you're doing that for your son.
Aaahh. The nostalgia is real. So many great memories. Lemmings were one of my favorites
Thanks Martin, glad it brought back some fond memories. Lemmings is just an all-time classic!
I couldn't help but squeak the Lemming "yippee" when the sound effects were mentioned.
***** Let's go!
Mad, ace stuff. Wow I remember some of these now having completely forgot about them (Sam and Max!)
I've been meaning to check out the old stuff to do a vid and I'll use this as a guide.
Awesome, thanks Luke! Sam & Max is great, and one I still play.
+onaretrotip Aye would like to play again too. Think it's on iOS now. Grim Fandango is and it's still quality, good port
great top 15 . i remember playing rick dangerous 1 and 2 on the c64 really loved those games
Thanks Dana! Ah, nice. I've not played them on C64, but they were great fun on Amiga and DOS.
Awesome. Remember Flashback and Another world ? Definatly worth a look
Yes! Also excellent games. I just bought Flashback (again) as it was ported to Dreamcast recently.
Planning on doing at least a video on the 1st game You played here since it is on a tablet of mine a kindle actually...
Haha that's great! Wonder how it will play on that.
I remember playing Hexen with the lights off and volume cranked.
Had to be done! :)
Not heard of that one!
ua-cam.com/video/2ji4V415QYY/v-deo.html
I have the full - extended - set of Trugg, bought at the time from the producers of the game.
Good List! But i missed UFO Enemy Unknown!!!
Thank you. So many people recommended that on my last DOS video, but I've never played it. I will have to buy it!
Good Luck! The price for original PC Version goes up to 90 euro.... but there some for less then 30 euro. But it is a must have!!!
Hebby76 I'd probably try it on Steam/GOG first to be honest.
That was X-COM, I liked the second one when they were underwater
yeah it was one of my favorites too, i played it a few times in the last years again :) and its still a great game !
Deadeye Flint Nice.
XWing and Cannon Fodder were awesome to play
Oh, nice! Still great games.
My first PC (1994) still works fine (running Win98) and I still play Doom, Quake, Blood, and Duke Nukem 3D. Lots of fun with surround sound and a 42 inch monitor.
That is awesome mate!
another great edition there Pete!
Thanks, Stu!
Great job on the videos. Just subbed. Really good stuff. :)
Thank you very much! Glad you like them. And thanks for the sub, much appreciated.
I've not played Panzer General, I'll check it out!
great video thanks. good call on Descent. when that came out it felt like virtual reality does today.
Thanks David, glad you enjoyed it. Ha, you're so right about Descent!
The Settlers is one of the greatest games ever made. Good choice!
LOVE that game.
GameHammer Classic Gaming it is, I love that series
DOS games i still play: Star Control 2, System Shock, Darklands, Master of Magic, MoO.. Lot's more actually but those are soooo good.
There are too many!
I know, right! The list is endless.
Elite. Deja Vu 2.
Some great suggestions there! A few I haven't played though.
sherlock holmes, the case of the serrated scalpel
albion
flashback and its sequel fade 2 black
captain comic
warcraft 1 & 2
another world
just to add some of the amazing games i grew up with that still deserve playing =)
Good picks! The only ones I've played are Flashback and Another World, they're awesome.
Albion is great!
Ah, gotcha!
Great vid, feel that MS-DOS games are neglected on youtube as everyone seems to focus on retro consoles. Ever play Jazz Jackrabbit?
Keep up the good work!
tuffasgong It is a shame. In its day, the Amiga was unbeatable for its gaming abilities. My all-time favourite system.
@@onaretrotip Jazz jackrabbit was awesome and so was Jetpack
Hero Quest and Loom are a couple of great games I played when I was younger
Loom was great, such a novel concept. I had very little experience with the Sierra adventures.
Check out "scorch" or "scorched earth"... can't remember the correct name precisely, but it was a precursor to the early Worms series, but with tanks and really basic. Had great fun with that.
Also, Xenon 2...
Scorched Earth has been recommended a lot, it sounds great. I'll definitely check it out, thanks.
Anyone remember the name of a cirkus game for MS DOS where you had to dive into a glass of water? Was out around the same time as The incredible Machine and Prince of Persia.
Ha! No, but sounds intriguing.
It's Fiendish Freddy's Big Top O'Fun
It Came from the Desert, remember it well. It was released before the PC overtook the Amiga graphically as the Amiga version looked a lot better and sound wise too if I am not mistaken. A sequel was released called Antheads. I liked a lot of Cinemaware games from the Amiga era.
Most games from the 80s and early 90s were better on Amiga to be honest. Huge Amiga fan here (my favourite system). I was a big fan of Cinemaware at the time too.
Prince of Persia, Rick Dangerous and IT came from the Desert were all games I had on Amiga and loved!
Great! I had ICFTD and Rick Dangerous on Amiga too, but only played Prince of Persia on my mate's 386 back in the day.
Great list! I've not played Empire, is it a strategy game?
Man awesome vid sir!
Thanks Matt, glad you liked it! Hope you're doing well mate.
Two games I'd personally add would be One Must Fall 2097 and Master Of Orion 1. I have DOSBox setup specifically for those two... lol
Nice. Those two have been very highly recommended. MoO looks awesome.
Add in System Shock and Star Control 2, and you've got my childhood entirely covered.
Love your pick of my all time favorite, Descent! As you most likely know, it was followed by Descent 2 and 3 and Now......Descent Underground. I'm not sure of the status of Underground, but I believe that it even has a VR option. Check it out. Cheers.
Thanks Thomas! What a game. I wasn't aware of Descent Underground, I'll check it out.
Some games from those two vids I actually knew - or even still play in DOS-Box emulators or Steam ports!
However, there's one game you left off the list - or two, anyway.
Both the Little Big Adventure games! (aka Twinsen's Adventure/Odyssey... named Relentless in some countries like the US)
Great action-adventure stuff from DOS that I still play and recently they even got a Steam release!
I never played the sequel, but I loved Little Big Adventure. It's definitely a contender for the list if I ever do a third part in this series!
It's certainly worth checking out. It's a pretty strong sequel with good story and some improvements to the gameplay and graphics. ^_^
DCLeadboot Thanks for the recommendation!
in addition to both this and preceding lists i would recommend:
Gobliiins (aka gob3),
Transport tycoon (de Luxe),
Microprose's Grand Prix 2 (by Geoff Carmond),
Fallout & Fallout 2,
Mortal Kombat II,
the incredible machine & T.I.M. 2
Thanks for the suggestions. Love The Incredible Machine!
What a game! It was so unique at the time, and really good fun. And I'd forgotten how good the music was!
The only DOS games I still play are the X-COM games UFO Defense and Terror From The Deep.
I need to play those!
onaretrotip Yes you do.
Have a look here - pcgames-download.com/?s=XCOM
you forgot about one of the best strategy games - Constructor ;)
Never played it!
Needs more Carmen Sandiago.
I never played that!
Sam & Max one of my all time favorites!
So good!
I've never played the Archimedes version (I was a BBC Micro man), but I originally played it on my Amiga 500+. Great game.
3 games I loved were; 7th Guest, 11th Hour, and Phantasmagoria
Ah, my mate had 7th Guest and we loved it! Not played the other two though.
Great list. The only thing I would add is Blood.
Thanks, Brïan! I never played Blood back in the day, but a few people have recommended it. It looks great.
Master of Magic should definitely be on the list. There have been some spiritual remakes of it in recent years but they haven't actually been better than the original.
Not played that one. I'm getting so many recommendations that it'd take me years to play them all, haha!
Released in 1994
I've never played any of the WIng Commander games! Nor Colonization, but that's one I really want to try.
sim planet was great
sim earth I mean
Great choices, although for some of these games like Lemmings I do feel the best ports were on the Amiga.
Oh, absolutely.
Have you ever played Hocus Pocus, God of Thunder, or Duke Nukem 2?
No, sadly. I came to the Duke Nukem series with Duke Nukem 3D, and not played the other two you mentioned.
Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss - this was years ahead of its time.
I've never played a single Ultima game!
Wow forgot MSDOS videogames was good enough to be kinda 3D color but I forgot the tech when I was playing DOOM, Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein
Glad to have reminded you! :)
I haven't played either, John! OMF looks bloody awful from gameplay I've seen, but am told by many it's very good.
The sequel that was on the Xbox was awful. The original was great for it's time
Two games I like to kick is the true grandfather of RTS games: Supremacy: thy will be done. which is also known as overlord. Very deep gameplay, but also, the soundtrack was made by the god of chiptunes, jeron tel.
Another I like is called Iron seed. Try to find the latest version that makes the game slightly easier.
Not played either, so thanks for the recommendations!
Lemmings is great, that can be pretty hard on the later levels too!
what about Police quest or space quest or kings quest or leisure suit larry or thexder????? :O
I was never really into the Sierra adventure games, perhaps due to their difficulty. I was more of a LucasArts guy. I did briefly dabble in Leisure Suit Larry though.
One Must Fall: 2097, which may still have the best single-player modes in any fighting game out there. It's also freeware.
A lot of people have recommended that, but I've not tried it yet.
I can go re-find the link and give it to you if that makes a difference. It's admittedly not the *easiest* DOS game out there to find the shareware version of IIRC...
Yeah, if you have it. Thanks!
I was able to find multiple, but I'll just give you one to keep things simple (it's from a fan-site, but if archive.org is anything to go by, they actually linked to this one on the official website as an alternative option to the official link way back when): www.omfuniverse.tk/downloads/OMF21CD.zip
Awesome, thank you!
Well I used to play at a Windows 98 a game called: MDK. Man it was very funny and hard for beginners.
I used to play that too on my mate's PC. I have it on Dreamcast but haven't played it for ages.
another amazing list.. thanks
Thanks Rich! Glad you enjoyed it.
A few that are definitely worth mentioning:
Protostar - War on the Frontier
Quest for Glory: So You Want To Be a Hero
Leisure Suit Larry in the Lands of the Lounge Lizards
Stunts (by Broderbund software)
SimAnt
Pizza Tycoon
Theme Hospital
Rollecoaster Tycoon
Ports of Call
A few I haven't played there. Loved Leisure Suit Larry and Stunts (which was called 4D Sports Driving over here).
Well, a quick rundown on these game:
- Protostar
A game loosely based on the Star Trek franchise.
- Quest for Glory
Originally known as Hero's Quest, this is a VGA remake.
- SimAnt
From the creators of SimCity came SimAnt, basically, you run an ant colony and you can control one ant to dig a nest and gather food while waging war on the red ants and trying to dodge the spider.
- Pizza Tycoon
Management type of game where you can run your own chain of pizza restaurants.
- Theme Hospital
Great game where you build your own hospital to treat patients. Great humor, where people come in with conditions like "bloated head" with the puncturing and reinflating of the head as treatment and more of such ailments.
- Rollercoaster Tycoon
Build your own theme park with a heavy emphasis on building rollercoasters
- Ports of Call
Manage your own shipping company. You need to buy and sell ships and use them to ship freights across the globe. In some situations you may be called upon to steer the ship yourself to maneuvre though reefs or between ice bergs or to dock the ship in the harbour.
morfanaion Wow, thanks for the in-depth explanations, I really appreciate it. Protostar and Ports of Call sound particularly good!
Have you played Ultima VII the black gate?
Sadly I've not played any Ultima games!
I highly recommend 7. It changed RPGs. You can get it on GOG for like 5 bucks. Well worth it.
