This is one of my "go to" movies. I first went to see this at the Odeon Southend in March 1978. I was mesmerised. I took my parents the next night, and sitting next to my Dad and seeing his face light up when the Mother Ship came over Devil's Tower and feeling the cinema shake is a memory that will stay with me - we always stare at the night sky together and he is now 92, so sadly one day I accept, that I will look and see him up there forever. I went to see the remastered version in 2017 and actually cried at the opening scenes - seeing it again on the big screen brought so much joy. This will always bring me a nostalgia overload that nothing in the last 20 years can bring.

I saw it recently and was quite disappointed. Jaws, Jerassic Park, ET, basically every other movie Steven Spielberg was involved with was more entertaining. Close Encounters was downright boring which is an accomplishment for a movie about aliens coming to Earth. Older sci fi like 2001 A Space Odessey had better graphics even though it was the slowness of the story that looked like the biggest weakness.
What? This wasn't a reboot with Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, The Rock, and directed by Michael Bay?! Come'on Sony! (Sarcasm, peeps. Please don't crucify me.)
Sebastian Sandford I can. 2017-1977= 40. Plus, this is considered a sci-fi classic next to "E.T." (Also done by Steven Spielberg), Aliens, and Back to the Future.
swag out of this world There are some good remakes out there, but they're not the best movies ever. And some movies like this one should never be touched!(except being remastered)
A sequel could work though if it was a psychological film that played on pepple's belief in Aliens. It could be set 40yrs later in our present day, and would focus on a man who turned up on a field at Devil's Mountain claiming to be Roy Neary. His appearance causes a media storm and controversy when the man ask to see his family. Basically they've all moved on his kids have all grown up and got families of their own, and when they see him for the first time they see he has not aged and looks exactly like their father who, to their knowledge cracked up and went missing all those years ago. The reuinion is emotional and short-lived as the family ultimately reject him, claiming him to be a imposter and the whole thing a sick joke. Roy is interviewed by all maner of Govt Officials and FBI, put through lie detector tests, no one can work it out. The film would follow Roy as he tries to piece together what has happened, and lead to two possible conclusions. Either Roy did go up, out there with the aliens, or he dreamt the whole thing and is not who he thinks he is. The film would work on a similar level to Bladerunner where the real truth is hidden and the audience have to pay attention to work it all out at the end. Roy would be voiced by Richard Dreyfus but with the tempo up on his voice, to make him sound young, but would use a double and cgi in the same realistic style as was done for the film - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, to make Richard Dreyfus look young exactly like he did in the original film.

This is my all time favorite movie. Has been since I was three. I can't recall a moment of my life when I didn't know every frame every line and every single second. This may in fact be the single most influential piece of narrative fiction in shaping my life. Hell there is no probably, it is the most influential piece of narrative fiction. I would literally be a different person if I had never seen it. Despite the fact that this is a movie that I have seen beginning to end perhaps 200-300 times in my life, the idea of seeing this in the biggest screen i can find with the loudest sound system I can think of already has me reduced to tears. I will go, and I will cry, and it will be glorious.

1977 was truly a one of a kind year for movies. The likes of we may never see again. The two blockbusters of '77, Close Encounters (and we all know the other one.) Had such an impact on not just the box office, but also American culture as a whole. Particularly Close Encounters, how Steven Spielberg presented this cultural icon was nothing short of astounding. And 40+ years later, the reverberations from Close Encounters of The Third Kind are still being felt today.
The smartest move on this thank you. just re-release it in theatres for people to see it on big screen who didn't get to see it the first time and for new audiences. Only if certain other studios would take note on this.
The world's best movie of all time. I was 9 year's old when this movie came out, I loved it then and love it now. Time's were so fun back then, I miss those days.
My favorite teacher growing up told me this was her favorite movie. Last night I remembered that she told me about it over 10 years ago so I saw it. This is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.
"1941"s mine. I can watch that one over and over again because it's just funny (and silly) as hell. Sadly, no one ever remembers it because it released the same time as "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" :(

Before around 19 years when I was small child, I saw this movie at around 2 am, without sound, while sleeping beside my dear mom. I did not know english, so did not get name of the movie. After many years, memories started coming in my mind about me watching this movie, and only thing I remember was a mountain, huge UFO and many small UFOs. I searched a lot and finally found this. It refreshed my all sweet memories of childhood, and gave me tears. I dont want to watch this movie. If I will, then it will override my memories. Thank you youtube...
I'm sure Sony will invest millions of dollars to remaster all of the "good old classic movies" in 4K just because Israel P. Roman asked them to in a comment section.
re release in 4K "The good, the bad and the ugly", "E.T", "Gone with the wind", "The color purple", "JAWS", The Exorcist", "Driving Miss Daisy", "The Blues brothers", and "The empire of the sun". please.
Back in the 80s they had shown this on TV just before Thanksgiving and that mashed potato scene! OMG! My brother and I started sculpting that mountain during Thanksgiving dinner and humming the alien tune over and over to the point our mom got so pissed she yelled at us. She was Vietnamese and had this strong asian accent and she saw the movie but didn't understand it much and thought the little aliens were Ethiopian kids so she yelled at us, "No! You no do that! You waste food! You see Etheeopeeo kids! They starving! No have food! NO NO NO!" Each "no" was punctuated with a smack to the back of our heads 😁
Please, if you get a chance to, go see this in theatres. Its basically just the directors cut of the film but in 4K, not any noticeable alterations or added cgi to the ships. It's spectacular on the big screen and there's no other like it. Still, to this day, no film effects me emotionally like this masterpiece does. The practical effects still hold up pretty well and It's Spielberg's magnum opus in my opinion. There was a little pre-show to go with it about the making of the movie which was interesting. If you've got any friends or family members who haven't seen it yet, get them to gO because it's stunning.
Love the air traffic control scene...so realistic and quite mysterious, the possibility of a race of other beings...are they friendly or are we going to die,and not do anything to stop them...brilliant scene, gives me goosebumps, with the possibilities.of contact...awesome film.
It is Ironic that as a youngster who had seen Aliens by the age of 9, that this film gave me more terror than James Cameron's epic action film. Because this felt real, and I remember I experience this again when I purchased this film on blu -ray, there is something very unsettling about this film but wow does the ending provide warmth to the heart. An amazing film that plays on the fear of the unkown but gives us a knowing comfort of warmth by films end! 10/10
so true. alot of people dont realize that this is more scary than almost all horror movies, because it might be true. i never did think of it as a "feel good" movie.
You know you guys are amazing with your treatment of your older movies. I had the pleasure of seeing this in theaters last September for the 40th anniversary release.
OOOHHH!!!! We should all go to the theater to see this...Just to prove that originals are most times better than the remake. And original ideas are awesome.
Barry is my favorite character. Lil guy throws the door open, "Is it me, or is it getting crazier out there?" Such an abundance of creativity in film-making back then, so much less now.
After all these years... it's still as relevant today as ever. Along with Alien and Blade Runner, they shaped the today's sci-fi landscape. And I'm also glad this wasn't a reboot.
I was worried you guys were making a reboot, don't scare me like that. Edit: So this comment gained some traction, so shameless plug in coming: I make video essays about movies and TV shows. Some of you may like them. :) Enjoy your day.
Before The Credits Same, I had been worried for the last couple of weeks since they put out the teaser for what we now know as the 40th anniversary announcement with the air traffic controller's communications and the famous notes.
July 2024. It's being re released and playing in theaters around the country. As part of celebrating Columbia Pictures 100th Anniversary. I went to see it at my local theater. It was fantastic to see on the big screen. It is one of my favourite movies and I'm so glad I got the opportunity to see it like that. This movie makes me tear up. I just love it. ❤
I've never seen this franchise, but seeing the 4k with such shitty props. And use of computer imaging, you can imagine the confusion I was experiencing
A sequel where Roy Neary returns 40 years later, and old Teri Garr and his kids and grandkids hate him because he abandoned all of them to go on a ride on an alien ship back in the 70's.
If you understood the movie - which is consistent thematically from beginning to end, you'd know that it worked out fine for all of them - from individuals to families to the human race. Pretty sappy - eh?
Still my favourite film of all time, ever. I still well-up when I see the alien. So beautiful, so intelligent, so knowing, kind, understanding. . He still looks wonderful, even after all these years of having cgi in films. . Never re-make this film.
You couldnt find a cuter kid to play Barry, or find a better actor then Richard Dreyfus to play Roy... so forget about making a new close encounters... never going to happen.. a true Masterpiece is to left alone and enjoyed not imitated.
I went to see it when it first came out, again when the special edition came out, plus all the times it came on TV. Now, in 2024, it's coming back again to the theaters. I'm going to see it this Sunday.
I love this movie. I just saw it at my local cinema. July 10th 2024. They were having only one showtime and one night. I am SO glad I had the opportunity to see this beautiful film on the big screen. I actually teared up a couple of times. I was sitting on the back row and there were only about 8 people in the whole theater so it was pretty cool. I have watched this movie several times on the TV and on dvd but it's an entirely different experience seeing it on the big screen. It is fantastic.
@@andys8483 Know what tipped me off that this was the original classic rereleased? The beginning of Columbia's classic Sunburst/Abstract Torch logo that was on the film originally in 1977 (specifically, the part where the camera zooms in on the Torch; the Sunburst shows up after that and condenses into the Abstract Torch)!
Yeah, and it's going to have Harrison Ford as an archaeologist who gets involved in a plot with alien artifacts, and...oh, yeah, they already made that shitty movie... REPLY
Everyone should watch this movie if he in one way or another is interested in them. Mandatory viewing. Seriously. They don't make em like that anymore.
I remember when I first saw this movie. It was 2:am and I couldn't sleep so I turned on HBO and saw this masterpiece. That was an unforgettable night. Best UFO movie ever.
A glorious triumph in movie history… Is the one who told us… We are not alone. All hail the superpowers of Steven Spielberg, John Williams, Vilmos Zsigmond, Douglas Trumball, and an army of the greatest artists in film you can imagine. Filled with absolute wonder, terror, and awe… Is Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

WHOOOAH I've watched this masterpiece dunno how many times growin' up but a re-edited trailer from a 1977 movie is giving me goosebumps??! What a trip...!
Awesome trailer. The part of the film where the scientists visit children at a school in India or Africa and all kids are singing the sounds and pointing up reminded me of another UA-cam video: ET Encounter 62 Witnesses - Ariel, Zimbabwe 1994. Actually, it was the other way around. I just watched the Ariel, Zimbabwe video then thought, "Hey, Steven Spielberg did this in Close Encounters of the Third Kind!"
yeah and the scientist its supossed to be Jaques Vallee and also Dr Hynek has a cameo (He was the UFO consultant for the movie) both great investigators on the phenomenon
You know, kid. There was a time, not so many years ago, when movies can be made without superheroes or childish plots. Well, to be true, if you can see superhero movies today it's because of movies like this.
I couldn’t even guess how many times I’ve seen this movie. I “thought” that they just don’t make movies like that anymore. Now I’m convinced, because this trailer managed to take all of the charm out of the actual film. They can’t even make a good trailer anymore, let alone a film.

ok i havent laughed so hard in a long time lmao i understand totally latina moms are very similar lol
An absolute classic film. Real edge of the seat excitement. Above all a great story. 40 years old ? How can that be.....
Watch the original not the special edition where you see inside the spaceship...
@@petercasson5929 did it hurt it?
45 years i am gonna watch it for the first time 😂😂.
@@mattdoespushups2350 I really hope you enjoy it ;-)
@@JuganautTimelapse 🤟🤟 movie starts in 2 minutes .
Who else gets chills from the tune the aliens play? Anyone? Cuz wow the use of it in this trailer it really did for me.
I've been lucky enough to see this on the big screen. Top-notch moviemaking.
forty years ago.Bloody hell im old.Thank god this isnt a sony reboot
It is Ironic that as a youngster who had seen Aliens by the age of 9, that this film gave me more terror than James Cameron's epic action film. Because this felt real, and I remember I experience this again when I purchased this film on blu -ray, there is something very unsettling about this film but wow does the ending provide warmth to the heart. An amazing film that plays on the fear of the unkown but gives us a knowing comfort of warmth by films end!
10/10
so true. alot of people dont realize that this is more scary than almost all horror movies, because it might be true. i never did think of it as a "feel good" movie.
Probably because it offered a glimpse into the very real possibility that you, me, and humanity as a whole very silently ARE being watched.
2:08 I won't lie, the way they did the alien signal gave me chills.
You know you guys are amazing with your treatment of your older movies. I had the pleasure of seeing this in theaters last September for the 40th anniversary release.
One of the best sci-fi moviese of all times.
The night time cinematograhy throughout this profound film is truly gorgeous and amazing.
I watch this movie everytime it is on tv. cannot wait to see it on the big screen! that's me in the front row!
After all these years... it's still as relevant today as ever. Along with Alien and Blade Runner, they shaped the today's sci-fi landscape.
And I'm also glad this wasn't a reboot.
The film is so good, because deep down inside we all know it happened.
Project blue book
The world's best movie ever made.
I was worried you guys were making a reboot, don't scare me like that.
Edit: So this comment gained some traction, so shameless plug in coming: I make video essays about movies and TV shows. Some of you may like them. :) Enjoy your day.
I know, that is why I said I "was" worried. Once the trailer had started it was clear it was original movie.
Same here buddy lol
Before The Credits Same, I had been worried for the last couple of weeks since they put out the teaser for what we now know as the 40th anniversary announcement with the air traffic controller's communications and the famous notes.
"...and featuring Karl Urban as the alien overlord."
Me too, my first thought was "not another one", but thankfully it's just a re-release.
Ok for a second i thought they were releasing a sequel. Would've been surprising.
Astro You mean it wouldn't have been surprising because Hollywood remakes everything
Evan Acree Well encounters of the third kind isnt that popular.
Astro No director has the balls to remake this..A flop would be to...
I hope they do this movie over and do it again. This is a classic
I would like to see Roy come back and explain things to his children that he walked out on.
If you understood the movie - which is consistent thematically from beginning to end, you'd know that it worked out fine for all of them - from individuals to families to the human race. Pretty sappy - eh?
Tablature Butler How did it work out for his kids?
+David - Fine. See above...

Can't wait to see this tonight. My first time viewing Close Encounters on the big screen. It came out the year I was born. A true classic.
My all time favorite movie. Just beyond wonderful.
Best first contact movie ever made, period.
Steven Spielberg
The greatest filmmaker ever
Saw this back home in iran.....I still get goose bumps when I hear the notes
Amazing movie
Still my favourite film of all time, ever. I still well-up when I see the alien. So beautiful, so intelligent, so knowing, kind, understanding. . He still looks wonderful, even after all these years of having cgi in films. . Never re-make this film.
So many unforgettable scenes in this film. Brilliant images that sear into the mind forever. Spielberg at his artistic peak.
You couldnt find a cuter kid to play Barry, or find a better actor then Richard Dreyfus to play Roy... so forget about making a new close encounters... never going to happen.. a true Masterpiece is to left alone and enjoyed not imitated.
One of the better sci-fi stories ever told and not one laser blast or explosion.
One of My top sci fi favourites ever in my life. This movie is magical
Probably the BEST movie ever made..especially for it’s time
Classic.
Oh thank god. I thought it was a reboot/remake. I just kept screaming NOOOOOOO, at the top of my lungs.
Yes,you can't better it so just leave it alone! Way too many 'classics' getting the inferior remake/reboot treatment nowadays!
A very much underrated masterpiece.
Don't worry no reboot but a prequel is on it's way and it will be called "Close Encounters of the Red Kind" and it takes place during the cold war !
Thanks for the update, Khaleesi.
Really?
Yeah, and it's going to have Harrison Ford as an archaeologist who gets involved in a plot with alien artifacts, and...oh, yeah, they already made that shitty movie...

Man, its happening for real!! What a time to be alive!!
Everyone should watch this movie if he in one way or another is interested in them. Mandatory viewing. Seriously. They don't make em like that anymore.
Every movie directed by Steven Spielberg will always be my favorite.
1977, where two best friends release their sci fi classic, this and Star Wars.
I watched this in Brasilia back when it came out. It was the only time I ever experienced a movie receiving a standing ovation at the end.
I have the soundtrack on vinyl...Gate-fold of course.
I'm as of now counting the days until September1!!!! Steven Spielberg can do no wrong- this movie is nothing less than perfection!
I'm actually gonna cry
Movies so insanely good that when it's reshown 40 years later, it started another round of ufo craze
The kids today be like: when will that music come out on Spotify?
You don't get kids of today, then.
i dont use spotify
One of my favourite films of all time. Richard Dreyfuss..love him..no matter what others say, if you see what I mean.
I remember when I first saw this movie. It was 2:am and I couldn't sleep so I turned on HBO and saw this masterpiece. That was an unforgettable night. Best UFO movie ever.
I was 37 when this movie was first released, loved it, but honestly, have never seen it a 2nd time, but it lives on in my mind.

A glorious triumph in movie history…

We are not alone.
All hail the superpowers of Steven Spielberg, John Williams, Vilmos Zsigmond, Douglas Trumball, and an army of the greatest artists in film you can imagine.
Filled with absolute wonder, terror, and awe…
Is Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
We have to raise our consciousness & realize these movies are Not made for no reason. This is how they show us what’s really happening to us, while they hide the truth in reality. 🛸🌌
Fact!
Crazy how they shove it in our face
WHOOOAH I've watched this masterpiece dunno how many times growin' up but a re-edited trailer from a 1977 movie is giving me goosebumps??! What a trip...!
Having seen something like this when I was 5, this movie remains to scary to watch for me, even to this day ! HA !
Hands down, the best Spielberg film ever made.
"Wow, what an incredible movie! I love it."
Timeless movie👍👽
OMG! I’m getting Close Encounters tattooed on my back. I love this movie so much!
*Parece top...*
cant believe this movie was made on 1978
Don't scare me like that! I thought it was a reboot for a sec!
A Masterpiece and my favourite film to date (which has an almost 'documentary' element to it, in parts). Will stay with me, forever. 🌌🌐
One of the best movies EVER made.
Apparently a president told Spielberg that he was very accurate
