I actually feel like the ‘Catherine warrior princess’ is kind of insulting to her. Catherine was an extraordinary and accomplished woman in her own way. She was well educated, spoke multiple languages and was intelligent. She suffered abject humiliation at court after Arthur died, was shunned and cast aside and was forced to fund herself for the duration of her stay in England when she was in political limbo (even though she had no money and a noble woman couldn’t get a job). Yet she still overcame that hardship .
She acted as regent when Henry went to war in France. When she was attacked by Scotland, she rallied troops and rode North up with them, heavily pregnant and in full armour. She didn’t lead them into battle (I don’t think she was even present) but she roused them with speech. She was a foreign Princess from an enemy nation, but she still won the heart of her new country. A feat that many Queens consort (most famously Marie Antoinette ) were unable to achieve.
She campaigned to have her daughter Mary properly educated even though it wasn’t common at the time. She increased the education of noblewomen, and thus is responsible for putting Elizabeth Tudor in a position where she was more prepared to rule.
And she was pious with strong religious convictions. No matter what Henry did, she fought the divorce to the end- even though it meant never seeing her daughter again. She never lost her conviction, never lost her dignity even at the end.
She was a Great Queen shaped by her times. And yet, the real Queen Catherine wasn’t good enough for the show. An intelligent, dutiful Catholic Queen with unfailing convictions wasn’t good enough, so they have to give her ‘more interesting’ accomplishments. They had to make her Xenia because Catherine was too dull

The real story of the Tudors is so dramatic I have never understood why the writers of Tudor fictional books, TV series, or movies felt compelled to add so much garbage. I don't expect documentaries, but to spin history the way so many have recently is just silly.

I watched the 1st episode and that was it. I wouldn't have watched any of it if I knew it was a Philippa Gregory book beforehand. I'll go to AO3 if I want historical fanfiction. I just rewatched The Other Boleyn Girl to review movies and TV shows with Anne Boleyn in it. At least it was the BBC one. However, you wanna talk about bad casting of Henry VIII. Jared Harris is an amazing actor, but Henry VIII? Lol
I do appreciate this show for kind of having Catalina of Motri. Even if they combined her with the high ranking Catalina de Cardones. I'll forgive it since period pieces do this anyway.

I saw a film a few years back, La Reine Margot. Thought it an excellent film. Would be great to see a good review on this film. French cinema does seem to focus some attention to the wars of religion period. I wish we in England would make a film on the early life of Thomas Cromwell. Or Henry VIII’s very early reign. But these are just personal wants

I think too often, even documentary series there is too much of a focus of Anne Boleyn and Henry’s divorce. A series focusing on the battle of Flodden and Henry’s 1513 campaign in France would be great. Most English armies only had about 10,000 - 15,000 troops. While Henry took 30,000. There isn’t enough work done on that campaign. Can’t wait for part 2 of your series on that campaign

It´s about the war against muslim. It was composed by a leonese composer, but he took the point of view of Boabdil, King of Granade, suffering because he was losing her kingdom . You can hear the drums (artillery) and the long final phrases as if he was crying. And , in the middle of the song , the words "viva el Gran Rey Don Fernando. Viva la muy gran leona , Alta Reina Prosperando ". It is a great masterpiece of ancient music. specially the second part. ua-cam.com/video/9lLg0F_diA0/v-deo.html

Apparently she's gone mad now and after revenge everywhere. There's also this odd scene of her giving birth as a young girl where they are tossing her up in the air on a sheet as she is giving birth......now I'm not sure if this is standard birthing practice but it all looked rather odd....at the end the two lovebirds squabble over if they actually bedded each other's siblings, and we all walk down the hallway to conclude season 1............apparently there's another season to come now.......

It’s not bad to alter some facts for the sake of drama because let’s face it, it’s not a documentary and everyone knows that historical dramas are not 100% accurate. But weirdly so the littlest things annoy me such as physical appearances rather than the events. Like Henry, Catherine, and Mary being black haired/brunette in the Tudors like what?? They were all gingers! Also on a side note I really hope Margaret and Mary make some appearances in the spanish Princess because I love those Tudor princesses. ALSO another side note why did Elizabeth of York sound so mean about Catherine?? They got along well and she even named her daughter after her. Oh well.

As soon as I saw Henry VIII was hot I knew they'd include a shirtless scene lol I can forgive it though because he was renowned for being good looking in his day, and he was noted as having a very athletic and muscular body and in the love island era you gotta pull in the viewers with that to, as south park would say "make their (va) giny's tickle"...sad but true fact of ratings, Tudors did the same being renowned for sex scenes when I think there was like 3 in four seasons.
Though portraits show Henry was hot more by contemporary standards not ours, as such at least face wise. Just like back then pale and more curvy was attractive in women now (conventionally) it's meant to be slimmer and tanned.
Some things are universal, more muscular guys are seen as attractive any time but it's funny how things like hairstyles etc change so radically. White skin then meant purity and virginity.
When I saw the black actor I immediately thought "oh ffsake not again...not the Mary of Scots movie AGAIN" where they cast a black actor in some role that a WASP noble really had in history but thankfully PHEW...they dind't fuck that one up again and it's real people, and actually a fascinating aspect of Cathrines journey I didn't know about.

    • @The_Laughing_Cavalier
      @The_Laughing_Cavalier  5 років тому +7

Sir Thomas More did describe her entourage as having "Ethiopian's" in it although I have heard this Lina de Cardones (actually called Catalina) might have been Moorish (the book I read it in said it was sort of unclear if she actually was Moorish in the first place from what I can remember!). There was a black trumpeter called John Blanke but he was just a trumpeter whereas this series makes out this Lina was a prominent Lady in Waiting, which isn't true. Having watched the first episode though, honestly that is just one of a hundred things that was wrong!
EDIT: Well, well well, turns out Historians have been confusing her for a Spanish Servant:
"Centuries after her death, the enslaved Catalina was conflated with another member of Catherine of Aragon’s household, the high-ranking Doña Catalina de Cardones/Cardenas. This confusion seems to have arisen from the 1874 work of Mariano Roca de Togores, Marques de Molins, who indexes ‘Cardones’ as a slave girl in Catherine’s chamber. Contemporary Spanish references to Catalina the slave never accorded her a surname and transcriptions of the Spanish state papers kept in the National Archives refer to ‘Catalina de Cardenas’. The Cardenas were a high-ranking Spanish family with royal connections: any daughter of theirs is unlikely to have married a humble Moorish crossbow-maker. Cardenas’ high birth is reflected in the list of Catherine of Aragon’s attendants compiled in 1501: she is listed third in precedence and given the honourable appellation of ‘Doña’. Towards the bottom of the list, unnamed, are ‘two slaves’. One of them must be Catalina."
      www.historytoday.com/history-matters/other-catalina
So it looks like there was a minor Moorish servant and then this Spanish servant yet they have been merged into one in this show!

Personally, I am not too keen on it to put it politely (currently doing a rant video about it) but I will say at least Charlotte Hope and whoever they got as Maragret Beaufort (name eludes me off the top of my head) were decent. As you say, that wasn't accurate although she did accompany Ferdinand during the Granada Campaign with her children and I believe she was pregnant at the time, but obviously did not charge into battle.

@Omara Oliver Because historical names are translated! Always translated to the language you are currently speaking. They were talking in English, they used their English names. Don't you call Henry VIII Enrique VIII in Spanish? Marthin Luther as Martin Lutero? Elizabeth I of England as Isabel I de Inglaterra?

I haven't seen that film actually, I would probably have to do a bit more reading for it but it is one to consider for the future (as long as I don't get a copyright claim!)

As much as I REALLY don’t care for the series, I believe her dress was accurate, a Spanish styled farthingale. 😉

A Spanish farthingale was worn under the dress, not as the dress itself, to give the gown some structure. The photos here show her incompletely dressed.

White Queen and White Princess are better than the others. Still based on romantic novels ...but better.

Did they put Pagans in Reign because Paganism, or “The Old Religion” actually predates Christianity? 🤷

Alice Cooper no she has a reputation for not being accurate if you dig deeper into the history you would know that she perpetuates rumors that were created to Hurt women and she’s got into spats with the actual historians of The era and I don’t think anne Boleyn was the root of all evil like she seems to believe I think you need to dig deeper into it .
