Thank you! Really needed tutorial. An architect here, I was so frustrated watching all sort of tutorials made by 3D artists that do not care about precision at all!
OH MY GOD! You're a lifesaver! I would like to thank you on behalf of architects and anyone using CAD really! hehe, such a gem! this is a really cool addon. I can't even describe how much I miss the CAD Align tool when I'm modeling in Blender! Thank you and the one who created it!
You are the most underrated Blender instructor out there. 🤯 Coming from a CAD background, this is enlightening! Thanks a lot for these videos, please, keep up. I subscribed to support you, but I'll spread the word about your channel.
I've used Blender a bit in the past, and always found precision modeling to be doable but tedious. That is until seeing this video, and the mind-boggling tools that CAD transforms provides. This really is a game changer
This is a gem, it was really hard for me to switch to 3d software that handles mesh because of how hard it is to have precise movements of elements. I am an industrial designer and I appreciate this video very much. I send you a big hug from Colombia
I can't believe this series dude. The little homework assignments, and these wicked add-ons. It's so well done. The inability to pan and orbit when I was moving things was killing me in blender.
Just want to say thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us, I can tell just how passionate you are about what you do. You sir are a gentleman and a scholar of what should be more renown!
+1 Jonathon - You saved the say on this one young fella! I've been struggling to manipulate some of my Solidworks imported objects in Blender for a MSFS 2020 airport scenery project and this tutorial saved the day. Thanks so much!!! 😁👍👍
I'm moving forward pretty quickly with your online "tutorial". I just learned how to place an object halfway between two other objects ("average" function). It was a little tricky, but in the end I did it, with an accuracy to the ten thousandth of a centimeter! Thank you!
I had lots of trouble with the average function until I realized you had to go into the Edit mode with all the cubes chosen first in Object mode. I don't understand it but that did the trick!
Thank you so much, your channel is one of the best for learning blender, and this series about Precision modeling and CAD like movement is amazing. I have some experience using AutoCAD so this really helps me!
Holy mother of God! Do my eyes deceive me? Precision movement in Blender? I’ve been using Sketchup and ArchiCad for almost 4 years now and I got so used to the from -> to movement. I used blender just for texturing and rendering, because the normal movement tool is abysmal ( wth, you press G and it moves directly. Also how everything just only snaps to the origin point and lack of snapping options; I just couldn’t get into it ). So now I can finally ditch Sketchup (my main modeling tool) and use Blender. I wanted to do this for such a long time because Sketchup has a lot of the basic functions missing ( like bevel and chamfer ). Anyways, cheers mate! You earned a new sub here! I’ll go ahead and look at the in-depth videos. I can’t contain my excitement haha :)
Hi guys, after installing the add-on, and even with this last one active, shortcuts like "V" do not work, it seems that there is no overlap on Blender's source commands. I'm using version 2.93.1. Does anyone know if there is any command or something for the add-on to take control of the shortcuts? Thank you!
you might need to clear the snapping with "space"? (I think following instructions closely on Blender 3.1 seems to mostly work, but I was tripped up by this myself)
This plugin is absolutely beautiful, as the video is. I love the tutor's tempo of speech as English isn't my native language but I still can understand everything I hear. // But as far as I can see, it's better to isolate objects you somehow use to place (I mean what button "/" do). Otherwise the plugin tends to crash Blender if you unintentionally snap to further objects in your scene :(
My snapping tools also don't show in the top left when I activate Cad Transform, perhaps it is a blender 3.3 issue? I can't seem to find a fix on the internet yet either.
Just found out about CAD transform now, i thought it would be a great tool for my workflow. I am grateful for your tutorial. Download the addon, donated as you suggested, and follow your tutorial. My conclusion is that the tutorial is great however the CAD Transform is frustrating to work with. I work with Blender 3.4 with "slcad_transform_0.93.2.beta.3" As the saying goes "It's not you it's me" I believe it is not the tool but me. All I tried to do is taking a building originated on LiDAR where the walls are not square, and squarer the wall to 90°. After a frustrating day could not do it - precisely. Yes, i can measure the angles and rotate accordingly however snaping a 92° to 90° was impossible for me. it is as simple SketchUp function as they come. if you know how you can preform this simple function, well..... 🙂Thank you again for taking the time
Hey, Ive been following along (very awesome tutorials so thanks!) but I just got stuck on the CAD transform tool. I installed it and i have the button but when i press it, no tools show up at the top or side banner. Anyone know why? I am using Blender 3.3 with version 0.91.0. I tried changing versions of both blender and slcad_transform but no luck.
Without doubt the most informative and well presented series of instructional tutorials on the subject of precision modelling and Blender in general. There are some excellent instructors out there and you Sir, are at the top of the pile. Like you, I come from a Fusion/SketchUp background (ArchViz & Product design) and I have been puzzled when viewing videos on hard surface techniques how to achieve accuracy. Its all very well eyeballing the form, but that doesn't really cut it if one needs to build it for real. Realism in rendering is one thing, realism in geometry is something else entirely. I'm delighted to have discovered your channel and even more so considering you are providing your expertise for free. Really, you are a Godsend! Your technique is clear, concise, free of waffle and repetition (unless called for) and the self-paced practice blend scenes are crucial to grasping the concepts as the pace increases. Highly recommended for anyone - noob or pro - to hone their skills on this amazing package. Top drawer!

CAD Transform just got an update a few days before my posting this comment. It's updated for the latest version of Blender (4.0)! A link to the new version is also available in the previous version which can be found by following the link in the description. The new version is 10€ (~US$9 pre tax as of the typing of this comment), but it's VERY much worth it. Another benefit is access to the dev's Discord.
Hi been going through your videos and they are great until I got to this section for some reason the g buttn to move the vertex doesn't activate when I press G or when I put mouse cursor over the corner vertices. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if the add on is now redundant due to 2.0 being out? please advise if possible thank you for any help
Was Ctrl+L covered in a previous video? This was a command he verbalizes but I don't remember it being explained. Took me a while to figure out why my Blender CAM wasn't acting like his until I noticed the subtle mention.
Blender' built in snapping really seems to only work when it wants (probably my own stupidity), but when using this you KNOW you are snapping. It's essential I would say. Only think is I use the spacebar as the tools dynamic menu so that needs sorting
How to best do the following tasks: 1. two objects. Align an edge of one of the objects with an edge of the other object. I don't mean move there, I mean the two edges should not only touch but have the same rotation (be parallel). 2. two objects. Align (position and rotation) the polygon of the first object with a polygon of the second object. Both polygons should at the end be in the same plane.
Hey, TheChartle. Best place to ask these questions is here: blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197 From what i'm gathering here the number one thing that there is to masker is the combination of snapping points and normal snapping will be able to achieve this I understand the question. But best ask the dev to get the concrete answer.
I love the toturials. There is one thing what I can't get done. at 1.08 you change the location, but all 3 coördinates at the same time. How is this done?
I clicked spacebar to clear the snapping tools OFF, but in my case the animation bar down starts playing the slider. I dont know how to fix it. I manage by using the shortcuts again to turn off
Very good series this playlist! I had some problems with the CAD Transform Add on because i had installed the wrong version, so pls check out your Blender Version and Download the correct one :D
I really wanted to like this, and I do, but I ran into a rather nasty trap at first while trying to follow your video. After starting Cad Transforms and selecting an object, I couldn't figure out why I wasn't seeing the snapping circle or movement gradations when moving an object. As it turns out, Grab (G) MUST be selected first for the snapping and measurement lines to be enabled! You did say that you selected G, then you say "but nothing is moving" so I thought that the G was unnecessary. Took a while to figure that one out.
Hey Unicycle, I can relate with your point. I find that the best way I see it is that I'm going into CAD mode and out of CAD mode. It can take a little while to get used to the idea.
Phenomenal videos and thanks for putting them together. Just an FYI the CAD transforms add-on throws an error on import with the newest version of Blender.
Great series, thank you! I have a question about scaling with CAD Transform - Is it possible to scale on 2 axis at the same time? For example, i have a cylinder in the default orientation and want to scale it on the X and Y axis but not on the Z axis. I press S to scale and select the face center of the top face and one of the vertices on the side. Now if i press Shift+Z to scale along the X and Y axis it still only scales along the X axis of the coordinate system i selected but not on the Y. What am i doing wrong?
12:55 If I wanted to increase the length from 3mm to 4mm in cad trsf, you would need to scale by 1.33333 which seems to be clunky. I will see your cad trsf video in the future, but I wonder if you could provide a quick pointer.
It's a great add-on, but I'm having problems with the keybinds (even when set to default,) apparently there is a conflict somewhere, especially in Edit Mode, between Space (used for Search and Clearing Snaps) and G (for movement and Grid snapping) I'm pretty sure it's me, not the add-on, that I don't know what I'm doing and clicking things when I shouldn't, but it's really weird.
Hey Xavier, Ah this one has catch me a few times. You need to make sure you are in an operation before using the short cuts. I.e. Make sure you are already doing a movement operation (G) and then you can hit space bar and all the other shortcuts.
Thanks!! Small question: is there any way you can make it snap by object, namely only snap to the selected object, or only snap to other objects? My situation is that I have 2 objects which are already close to each other, and I want to align them exactly. I'd like for the "from" of the translation to only snap to the current object, and the "to" of the translation to only snap to other objects.
How do you install CAD? I downloaded it from the link that was sent and got zip file but when i install it into blender i get error KeyError: ‘bpy_prop_collection[key]: key “slcad_transform not found’ help would be appreciated
Hi Jonathan, thanks for your excellent videos. I encountered my first glitch in this video Part - 10. I use Blender 3.5.1. and it seems not to recognise the CAD Transforms add on, so I am stopped cold in my tracks. Do you have any constructive suggestions re a solution? I would very much appreciate your help. Keep up the good work!
It's a great addon. What I'm not seeing is a way to align the gimbal in a 3 point manner. Say your cube is rotated such that no face is co-planer with any global XY, YZ, ZX plane. How would you snap the gimbal so that the XY portion of the gimbal is co-planar with chosen face of cube (and individual X & Y axis's co-linear with edges) with Z axis in line (parallel) with the intended Z axis edge of the cube? In AutoCad it's easy to manipulate your UCS in this manner as well as do one step 3D aligns. AutoCad treats a UCS as an object .. sort of .. that can be manipulated in about any way, including origin shifts. That would be nice addition to this plugin .. if possible.
Hey Xen Uno, I completely understand where you are coming from. 1st I would say to provide this feedback directly to the developer and then maybe he can implemtn somehting blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197 2nd, the key thing to understand here is "Normals" more often then not the reason why there is only 2 axis definitions be because the normal is taken as the 3rd. I know it can be a little wired and by all means I don't know if it's right or wrong but I just thought I would share my experience with you and encourage you to let the developer know.
@@Keep-Making Hi MT. Leger actually does know and has commented briefly on it in one of your other videos. His summary as I recall was that it would be complex to code but he is aware of the need. I see there is that Blender function (can't think of name of it atm) that does allow Cad Trans to move gimbal only but again .. you still can't line gimbal up in a quick 3 snap manner ala AutoCad. That function of Blenders is perplexingly avail only in Object mode.
Hi everyone I really do like the tales you make! But I was wondering if somebody knows why my shortcut I assigned (alt C as in the video) does not work in edit mode, in object mode it does work. In edit mode, 'though it says alt c is the shortcut, it does not do anything.
Is it normal for the unit scale to switch automatically from millimeters to centimeters to meters as you increase the scale or distance? I feel like this did not happen until recently so maybe I changed something in Blender but I don't know what. My scene properties are set to metric, 0.001 unit scale and millimeters. But when I move a vertex 10mm it will show 1cm and when I move it 1000mm it turns to meters. I'd like it to just stay in millimeters all the time. Anyone have an idea how to solve this?
Blender 3, I am at 4:40. I believe i have everything configured identical, I am in object mode with CAD selected and vertex snapping on. I have maxed out the snap circle distance in the plugin options and I am still not seeing any circles on the vertex of my cube. Clicking at this point works like the selection tool. Anyone have any ideas?
Hey TechSquidTV, Not entirely sure. It's a little hard to give support here on youtube tho. So feel free to join the Maker Tales Discord and ask there and we'll all be more than happy to help you out.
The installation of the addon proceeds normally and it works perfectly the first time, I save my file and when I open it again I can't find the CAD tool. I get an error message: "Tool Slcad Transform not found for space View 3D"? Can you help me Thank you
Hey Claude, your best place to get support for the addon is by the dev blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197 To me it sounds like you might not using the right version for the right version of blender.
The addon is great, but without your tutorial I was still using the old way to put object-a precisely close to object-b. (too long to be explained... the whole day to do it on 20 objects). The addon works perfectly on Blender 3.6.4
Great videos - thank you! I'm just transitioning to Blender from 3ds Max. This kind of movement is normal in 3ds Max. Until I saw this I was thinking I'll never be able to get used to the movement in Blender - seems so convoluted. The big question I have is - why is CAD transforms not native to Blender??
can you make an update video... i have the new one but it does not look the same as yours. i have blender 4.0 and cad transform 2.0 :) pleaaaasssseeee :)
I am having trouble with Cad Transforms, it loaded ok but I have no menu !!!! I downloaded 2.93.0 Blender and Cad Transforms 0.0.9. I dont Know if you can help but asking anyway!!!
I'm a little confused without seeing images. Best place to ask for help is the maker tales discord but if you are still having trouble with CAD transforms the perfect place to ask for help if from the dev: blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197
Suppose I´m doing something wrong. Downloaded Cad transform and tried to install it. installed Py files: _init_.py, slcad_snap.py, and slcad_transform.py. I´m running blender On Mac OS Big Sur
None of the CAD Transform shortcuts work for me- well... CAD Transforms itself doesn't seem to work? I'm using Blender 3.3 and CAD Transforms 0.95. EDIT: Oh.. I see you used 'G' to move.... Maybe time for 'Screencast Keys'?
Small performance issues with huge set of 2d data are expected as it is implemented on python side, however it should not be the case even large 3d models. Tests did not show any slow down on 1.5M + points terrain. On 1M + points line set and init time is like 0.1s / 100k points on polygon curves, bezier may be slower. May be an issue with the structure of your data, with high number of blender's entity ?
@@StephenLeger I imported 3d objects from Rhino. I can send my file also to check. It is super laggy. I can't control anything when l enabled this addon.
@@hapichteam to me looks like an issue with the model's structure rather than overall weight, too many objects i guess. Feel free to share the file with support (at) blender-archipack.org By the way, thank you for your feedback !

Had the same issue, thank you for putting the solution!
Phenomenal videos and thanks for putting them together. Just an FYI the CAD transforms add-on throws an error on import with the newest version of Blender.
I think a version that works with 4.0 is on the way…
Great series, thank you!
Ok i kind of figured it out. If you press Tab it works. Don't know why though :)
Hey Spike, that is exactly it. As to why it's like this. It's how the addon was designed by the developer.
12:55 If I wanted to increase the length from 3mm to 4mm in cad trsf, you would need to scale by 1.33333 which seems to be clunky. I will see your cad trsf video in the future, but I wonder if you could provide a quick pointer.
you just have to che "absolute scale" in the options of the add on, and type 4 mm!
Hey Xavier,
Ah this one has catch me a few times. You need to make sure you are in an operation before using the short cuts. I.e. Make sure you are already doing a movement operation (G) and then you can hit space bar and all the other shortcuts.
@@Keep-Making Thanks!
Thanks!! Small question: is there any way you can make it snap by object, namely only snap to the selected object, or only snap to other objects? My situation is that I have 2 objects which are already close to each other, and I want to align them exactly. I'd like for the "from" of the translation to only snap to the current object, and the "to" of the translation to only snap to other objects.
in that case you could put the cursor in the destination point, and hide that object. then, snap to the cursor
How do you install CAD? I downloaded it from the link that was sent and got zip file but when i install it into blender i get error
KeyError: ‘bpy_prop_collection[key]: key “slcad_transform not found’
help would be appreciated
Hi Jonathan, thanks for your excellent videos. I encountered my first glitch in this video Part - 10. I use Blender 3.5.1. and it seems not to recognise the CAD Transforms add on, so I am stopped cold in my tracks. Do you have any constructive suggestions re a solution? I would very much appreciate your help. Keep up the good work!
Send a message to the developer of CAD Transforms on the blender artist forum.
1st I would say to provide this feedback directly to the developer and then maybe he can implemtn somehting blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197
2nd, the key thing to understand here is "Normals" more often then not the reason why there is only 2 axis definitions be because the normal is taken as the 3rd.
That function of Blenders is perplexingly avail only in Object mode.
seems really useful tool but unfortunately 4.0 version wasn't release. will it affect on following course?
Hi everyone I really do like the tales you make! But I was wondering if somebody knows why my shortcut I assigned (alt C as in the video) does not work in edit mode, in object mode it does work. In edit mode, 'though it says alt c is the shortcut, it does not do anything.
hmmm, it seems maybe a bug in the hotfix I just installed of the cad transform addon (0.93.1 hotifx), reinstalled 0.93.0 and it works again.
Great to hear! Remember that the DEV is always open for bug reports: blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197
@@Keep-Making thank you! 🙇♂️🙇♂️
You may be forgetting to press G. I know I was.
The installation of the addon proceeds normally and it works perfectly the first time, I save my file and when I open it again I can't find the CAD tool. I get an error message: "Tool Slcad Transform not found for space View 3D"?
Can you help me
Thank you
Hey Claude, your best place to get support for the addon is by the dev blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197
To me it sounds like you might not using the right version for the right version of blender.
Indeed with the right version it works much better ! thanks
Blender 3.1? The round snapping cursor doesn't appear when CAD transforms is activated.
You may be forgetting to press G. I know I was. Also your circle size preference may be too small as well.
@@stemdojo6963 Thanks 🙂
can you make an update video... i have the new one but it does not look the same as yours. i have blender 4.0 and cad transform 2.0 :) pleaaaasssseeee :)
this vid was made a year ago i cant seem to find the link
Please tell me anyone, in my blender there is not cad transform tool in add-on menu, where to find it or from where i can download it?
CAD Transform For Blender Addon:
bit.ly/CADmoveBlender
Please consider supporting the dev as this really is amazing
@@Keep-Making thanks a lot
I am having trouble with Cad Transforms, it loaded ok but I have no menu !!!! I downloaded 2.93.0 Blender and Cad Transforms 0.0.9. I dont Know if you can help but asking anyway!!!
I'm a little confused without seeing images. Best place to ask for help is the maker tales discord but if you are still having trouble with CAD transforms the perfect place to ask for help if from the dev: blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197
Hey I have the same problem. Did you find a way to fix it?
link for cad transform not working!
There is no CAD Transforms from site
Nop it's 100% there: bit.ly/CADmoveBlender
Suppose I´m doing something wrong. Downloaded Cad transform and tried to install it. installed Py files: _init_.py, slcad_snap.py, and slcad_transform.py. I´m running blender On Mac OS Big Sur
Ensure your browser did not unzip downloaded files on the fly ! You may recompress the whole folder and setup from that compressed file.
Thank you, that was the problem. Safari had unzipped the files.
I'm here from the future on CAD Transform 0.9.5 and the small rotation bug after the automatic scaling still exists, just so people stay aware.
The problem is you can't use this addon in large fales. It gives lags. So it is not usable for architecture.
@@StephenLeger It has 2 million verts, 1.6 million faces and 5996 objets.
@@hapichteam to me looks like an issue with the model's structure rather than overall weight, too many objects i guess. Feel free to share the file with support (at) blender-archipack.org
By the way, thank you for your feedback !
@@StephenLeger I'm transferring the file. It will take a while.
Now we are on v4.1 and CAD transform is no longer free
I should of said No Snappin Menu.
CAD transforms does not really have a snapping menu. If you are talking about the snapping buttons then I think the best person to help here is the dev: blenderartists.org/t/cad-like-transform/1226197
