- In this video we explain how a Window Air Conditioner is working.
The A/C has two air cycles: the room air cycle and the hot air cycle
The room air cycle has the evaporator, where the refrigerant evaporates and cools down. The hot air cycle has the condenser, where the hot and compressed refrigerant cooled down by the outside air.
The compressor is compressing the refrigerant, which creates a lot of heat.

This was excellent and answered my question on whether or not the unit draws from outside air. Now I know that it doesn’t. In Canada we are suffering from horrific forest fire smoke and didn’t want to be sucking that in. That’s why I bought an AC - since we have to seal our homes from outside air and it gets way too hot in summer
Fellow Canadian here. This is exactly why I came to this video, to make sure I wasn't bring in smokey air indoors. This video answered that perfectly
@@craigoroni7140 Yup. I got mine installed in my back office and it actually cools the entire upstairs-given enough time and with a few fans
@@big_red_machine3547 Hey, can I ask what type of AC you have? I'm in the market for one but I'm actualy trying to make sure cigarette smoke doesn't get in (chain smoking neighbors).
Me too! I also thought my AC would pull a lot of air in so I'm relieved. Thanks MegaSafetyFirst for the video!
Have you had any issues? I am in ny and I'm suffocating. I wanna run my ac and I'm scared. My partner has asthma and I don't wanna bring the smoke in my house
I have this same model in my bedroom window. I clean the front filter every year & it's been running great for about 5 yrs now. Good unit.
Which model is this?
Thank you for sharing simple, clear, and direct information. 💐
Finally someone who can just explain this stuff easily! Great video 🏅
Thanks I've been trying to figure out what to do since I saw no drainage valve or hole. You've done a great job explaining everything so I can do water leakage repairs.
Yes me too. I am about to install my LG 14,000 BTU unit and was going to remove the drain plug beforehand. I was worried that water in the pan would rust everything in no time, but instructions say it’s supposed to blow the water out by the fan. After this video, I understand the logic behind blowing the water through the condenser for higher efficiency!
@@big_red_machine3547 I still drilled a hole in mine, in the winter, unless you find a way to cover it, mold and mildew build up happens fast. You dont want to breathe that in.
@@2siccaudio Yes I ended up removing that rubber plug and the water drained continuously. In winter, I wrapped plastic over the outside and taped it on. Sealed it well over winter. It’s a nice unit
I don't know how many so called experts I have tried to tell that window air conditioners don't pull outside air into the house!! I say why is the air filter facing the inside then? Nope they always say they bring air in from the outside and it circulates inside your house!
Thank you smallblock..I thought my ac wasn't working..so many people told me the air should be blowing in the house through the bottom of the ac from the outside of the house instead of vice versa
On the inside of the room the AC unit has the front that is divided into two vents, the upper and the lower. The air inside of the room enters the AC into the lower part as it gets sucked into the AC unit then the air blows out of the AC at the vent across the upper part of the AC unit where the fins are to direct the air flowing direction.😮
Interesting.... But if your neighbors are having a barbecue and you are running your AC you still smell it somehow. Dang nature you're interesting.
@@graciegjjthat is because they are not completely sealed (I know exactly what you are talking about it happens to me too)
@@MrCaze28 yeah that's what I was thinking they're not completely sealed so that's how outside odors and such can get in.
Very good video.
Very good video. I'm currently using two of these exact same units and have had several of them over the years. I find them to be very good units and you are right about the cloggage that makes water backup and drip to the inside. But I have found it easy to avoid if you don't wait untill they're already clogged but wash them out with a water hose from the outside a couple of times a summer.. Thanks for making the video.
Thanks .
Thank you. Trying to decide which brand to buy. Based on reviews, now they are poorly made and a lot of the problems are from the sensors or controls. Wish they just made them like the older models; to last at least a few years!
I did tons of research and the best by far was the LG dual inverter models. I just bought their 14,000 BTU one and working on installing it.
I bought this exact model for my bedroom & it's been running great for 5 yrs now. I just clean the front filter every yr.
Does it concern the room temperature i noticed that if my room temperature is high my ac always turning off i
I am installing a window air conditioner for cooling my kitchen built by closing up my back patio. I am installing this from inside my utility room window which means the back side of the ac will be inside my utility room and front side will be in the kitchen built on back patio. Anything wrong with this setup?
Hi, is it okay if my condenser(back part of a.c) is inside my ceiling? My house is loft type... Technically it was installed inside my house
How do i set the temperature that i want? When i go to change the temp it just goes right back to 80
is it safe if the outside part of the ac is in a closed area with a exhaust fan?
What if it keeps leaning further and further every now and then will it fall?
Do the older units do thre same thing? Still pull from the inside and citculate ..
Yes, they usually circulate the inside-air.
Do air conditioners pull in air from the outside? Anyone know? Thanks.
They do not.
@@MegaSafetyFirst thanks so so much. I'm in Philadelphia and the air is bad due to Wildfires and it's still hot too.
If the inside air is the one being cooled and filtered and recirculated inside the room, then what happens to the CO2 we breathe out during sleep? Are we breathing that back in making us sick?
window was built for this vid lol
Do I have to refill and change the filter?
It should be cleaned over few weeks. I just rinse it off with water.
No need for a new filter.
@@MegaSafetyFirst And that is with any window ac unit? Thank you so much for your reply.
But does outside air get in thru the AC?
I asked the same question I'm in Philadelphia and air quality is dangerous. He messaged me back and said they Do not.
@@christisrisen6774 Thank you. I live in NYC and had windows closed but it gets hot so we turned the AC on
Good question let's learn!
Do window ac units bring in outside air? We have wildfire smoke in our area so bad air quality. Can or how can we use our ac window unit without bringing in the smokey air from outside?
The A/C circulate the inside air only.
Hi @wendy this is why I came here too. It seems a little unclear. I have a Frigidaire, small window AC, and I’ve been told many different things. I think it may depend on the middle of ac
doesn't collecting the water lead to having more humidity inside the room?
I think that the water being collected is essentially the same function as a dehumidifier. If the box was open and temps and all the rest naturally caused evaporation, like a water bottle left open in the same room you want to run the ac in. That water eventually goes back "into" the air. When it rains, the water in the air has condensed and fallen, or in the morning dew on plants, that water from the air eventually condenses and then returns back to the air. Fog, etc.
Where is the expansion valve?
The valve is located right at the 'entrance' to the evaporator. Unfortunately it was hidden by to many other components to point it out in this video.
I have a 12K BTU Whirlpool window unit. The remote does not work, and the LCD display does not work with touch. So I turn it on with the power cord reset button, but it comes on only for a few seconds and then turns off, the display on the LCD stays on, so it is getting the power. Any idea?
How to set a temperature, mine keeps changing.
While pressing the up- and down buttons to adjust the temperature, the display will show the temperature we are trying to reach.
A few seconds later the display will switch back to showing the current room temperature.
Thanks
@@MegaSafetyFirst i was hoping to see inside the part responsible for the room cycle, so i could see what type of fan is in there, and where that fan is positioned.
Lol! This unit can be super-efficient if taken apart and cleaned the right way. Once you take the cover off, you clean the back coils. The area where the fan is blowing. It will collect a ton of debris. It takes time and some elbow grease. Small brushes, Shop-Vac, air compressor and patience. This will return your unit to 100% efficiency! And cut your electric bill in half. The guy that posted this video really missed the big problem. Smh. If you want to prevent this problem in the future. Attach window screen to the case cover vents. 😎
Good idea
You didn't explain how to operate the ac unit
Has anyone ever wonder why the air intake should be on the top and the cold air coming out should be in the bottom. Hot air rises and cold air flow down. When window air conditioner are on , It sucks hot air but it reality its actually sucking in cold air. This is considered a conundrum. Just like Hydronic boilers .. should the circulator pump be pushing (top of boiler ) or pulling ( Side of boiler). As a professional Boiler installer for 30 years. I know this answer and we dispute with corporation that they are wrong. Because they want to make sure your system is not working they way it should be. They want you to buy and spend on parts or even purchase a new boiler. Baseboard are installed closed to the ground because it sucks in cold air from the bottom and hot air rises. Now going back to the circulator pump. When circulator are pushing water to the baseboards, the water temp is about 190 F. By the the time it comes back to the boiler the water is cooler. Causing less damage to the circulator pump. We did this test for a house with two boilers for 5 years. Remind you these are exact boiler using a Taco-007(pump) . The pushing circulator pump failed within 3 seasons because it over heated making the pump inoperative. The one pulling is still working till this very day. Window AC are jokes. Mini Split units are install on top of the ceiling for a reason and that's why they are the best. FOR NOW !
The air intake (for the conditioned side) is on the bottom.
yah its helpful, but Im kinda slo, I wish there was an animation to help me understand even better, but yah this gave me the jist of shit
