    Great explanation - thanks! I'm afraid too many outdoor kit companies sell you kit presuming you are mountain climbing in a hooley. Fact is almost no one is. An umbrella is a portable shelter suited for walkers (not climbers), and as many find out the hard way - even expensive 'breathable' outer shell wet weather jackets are simply not breathable enough. An umbrella allows you to keep the jacket opened up yet still keep dry. The hands free then allows you to keep powering along with trekking poles so you have the best of both worlds. Lastly, some long distance hikes are exposed to hour after hour of baking hot sun (e.g. Camino in N Spain), a sun reflecting umbrella then really comes into it's own... Thanks for the video!

    • @CampLifeBushcraft
      @CampLifeBushcraft  4 роки тому

      Thank you kindly, yes I agree with you. And the UV protection is such a good addition, imo it could be a real life saver if you were exposed to a hot sun trying to cover ground.

    I had made the decision to have an umbrella and have been researching sites for as much information to make an informed decision before purchasing. This one seems to be the ducks nuts for all season hiking where I am in Western Australia. We do get very heavy drenching rain. Though hiking in summer is out of the question not simply because of the heat but for the snakes and kangaroo ticks that make life awkward. Thanks for a very helpful video.

    I got the G4Free version and can attest that an UV-protecting umbrella in 90F (32C) weather is a wonderful thing. Just did a hike up Granite Mt to the fire watch tower, (video out in a couple of weeks) and the temperature under it was significantly cooler. In my home tests, I put a thermometer on the hood (bonnet) of my car and it jumped to 120F. I put the umbrella over it, waited half an hour and the temperature dropped to 90F.

    I sometimes bimble with a brolley and do believe they work well whilst out particularly allowing a greater field of vision. Can be useless if windy as you then have to carry as extra load on your pack. Had considered and looked at this hiking specific one but not yet gone for it. I know they are often used in warmer climates as a sun shield. I am not bothered if it doesn't look cool and for Si, good kit for a smoker. Cheers....dayglo Dorset!

    The two main hiking types on Dartmoor come in two varieties.
    The 'Weird Beard', who is something of a traditionalist. I class myself as one. Then we have the 'Dayglo Derek' who has all the new fancy gear. I think you maybe transitioning from one to the other. Take care my son and be vigilant this virus is highly contagious and can be expensive....I'm now battling my 'must have one' urge.

    Word of the day "Deploy" D E P L O Y.
    Different for sure, what if you made the clip in fixing on your back pack so that it sits in the middle of your spine... thus being more central rather than the left or the right bias. I'm not dissing it... I know you'll be surprised by that... not sure it has that many benefits rather than holding one or just Velcro strapping a golfing umbrella in the same way... Looking forward to the long term test results... Sky one reception should be OK though with the left side hang 😉

    • @CampLifeBushcraft
      @CampLifeBushcraft  4 роки тому +2

      I am surprised to be fair, I know what my reaction to Rob telling me he'd got one was. you can put the fixings wherever you like, but there's a lot of room under it, so I feel where I had it would cover all bases.
      the benefit is being hands free, it means if its raining I can still hold the dog and your hand.. ahem I mean my camera!
      some folk use trekking poles, it would suit them too I suppose.
      the sky dish comparison had me in stitches : )

    Ive bee doing this for years before there any "treking umbrellas", but i attach it between my back and the pack just off to the side, better coverage and more comfortable as the shaft is not pressed against your torso

    Trekking umbrella?? Never - too Naf by far! Actually - just quietly ordered one. Combined parasol and umbrella which I intend to use on hot, sunny days or rainy days with light or no wind. I`ll only break out a sweaty “breathable" rain jacket if its really blowing and raining hard. Such an obvious solution to the endless debate about pricy 2 layer vs 3 layer vs impermeable etc. rain gear!
