Also, I love trivia and games and they did have it almost every morning as well as in the evening, and sorry you missed it b/c when your team wins, the prize is a round of free drinks (which is waaaaay better than the trinkets that most cruise lines give out).🙌🏽

We are currently on our third Virgin cruise. After The Wake on our second cruise, we canceled our other 2 reservations there (it was a 15 night sailing). We ate at The Wake tonight; it was the best dining there yet. Dinner took 90 minutes (last time it was 2 1/2 hours without desert). The steaks were excellent in flavor, tenderness, and moistness. Service was good. We will dine there again. We were sad to see the Secret Steak removed from the Razzle Dazzle menu, but the new desert menu was good. Brunch was excellent as always. So, yes, the food is in general very good and the best we've had at sea. TRUE, we've had occasional specialty dining meals that were superior to VV, but they cost at least $25 pp extra....and we've had specialty dining on Princess that was not very good. For the price we paid for this cruise, can't be beat.
We’ve sailed Scarlet twice. We weren’t as thrilled with The Wake on our second sailing as we were on the first one. We felt that Extra Virgin was the best on both sailings. But the second time we had dinner in Razzle Dazzle due to them having a new dinner menu and it was exceptional.

Great review! We absolutely loved Gunbae! Honestly the best (and funnest) dining experience on land or sea! Try the room service next time! We had headaches one morning and ordered breakfast to our room. Excellent, hot, and delicious!

Thorough evaluation. Thanks so much. Have you seen people with food allergies or intolerances? Were they addressed? If so, how? I’m intolerant to garlic in all shape and form and it’s usually part of every dish. Eating while travelling has become a nightmare for me.

Fun tip. Any of the places that give you a puck when you order, like the Pizza Place. The puck works pretty much anywhere on the ship, you can take the puck with you and return to get your Pizza when its ready.
Chris, thank you for this AMAZING and thorough review! This has to be one of the best cruise food reviews I've ever seen. I value your opinion since you have cruised with a lot of different lines. My wife and I will be taking our first Virgin Voyage in June 2024. We have been cruising since 2013 and have gone on a total of 10 cruises together, those being 4 Carnival, 4 Royal and 2 Princess. We tend to judge food by how the buffet holds up. Our thinking is, can we eat at the buffet without the need for specialty dining? We do also indulge in specialty but not too often. So far, The Royal Princess for Princess Cruise Line is the winner when it comes to their buffet. Of course, that was in 2019 so things probably have changed. Recently we sailed with Royal Caribbean 4 in a row from 2022 to 2023. As I mentioned before, Virgin will be the next one. We felt like Royal was hit or miss with their food, including the specialty dining. To be fair we haven't tried all of it, but so far the only one we would gladly visit again is Giovianni's Italian Kitchen. The main dining room food was mostly a 3.5 to a 4, Windjammer had a lot of issues on all four ships, the worst being Harmony of the Seas, which had cold tasteless food for dinner at the buffet. We do cook at home frequently and are not expert chefs, but when a cruise ship can't cook a basic dish that we can do better, there are NO excuses! With Royal we've had dry burgers, stale burger buns, undercooked beans, super salty marinara sauce, cheese biscuits that were hard as a rock, tasteless chewy low-quality beef for sandwiches, and more. Honestly, each cruise line we've been on has its pros and cons overall. I'm picking on Royal since they are our most recent and they just keep raising their prices. I hope the same does not occur on ICON, which we have no interest in until the prices come down, which might be never, and that's ok with us. It looks beautiful but that's just too many people. We are both in our early 50s, so our preferences are changing. And heaven forbid I pay $4000 for an interior on ICON and receive poor food quality like I mentioned, I would NOT be happy! At those outrageous prices, I would expect near perfection, which we all know is probably not going to happen. I'm just curious, you mentioned having some terrible cruise food. Which cruise line and ship? And by the way, I will be on Celebrity (Reflection) for the first time July 1st 2024. My wife will not be going with me on that one. It seems like Celebrity over all is a step up from Royal, and I'm looking forward to that experience. Sorry for the super long comment. I have so much to say about cruising and not just about food. Once again, I value your opinion as a well-seasoned cruiser.
Totally agree with you about The Wake! I've oddly also had some of the slowest service there. Hoping they make some modifications soon. The Dorade there is the best fish on the boat, though, and they have some really good oysters available as an upcharge.

Awesome review! I agree with all your ratings except for the wake but we went for brunch and you could be correct about it being an off night for them. Suggestion for anyone who reads this comment, make your reservation for gunbae the first night of your cruise so you can make friends while on vacation :)
No longer a Virgin on Virgin, lol. I think your reviews were pretty spot on. The galley was between a buffet food stations, with a twist change due to the pandemic and sailors like it so it is here to stay!

Unfortunately, we did not try room service, but everything we have read or seen on UA-cam indicates that it is very good. We found the food to be perfectly seasoned and not too salty for our tastes.
I hope you’ll give the wake another shot next time you’re on board. I’d have to say that was my very favorite restaurant and we did have dinner there one evening and breakfast/brunch every morning. The salt crusted Dorado was amazing and I would take the cruise all over again just for that one meal. In fact, we are going on valiant lady for my birthday in January! Breakfast/brunch is amazing at the week as well. They offer three different types of eggs Benedict! I think were things might’ve went wrong for you was your choice of dining time. 7 PM is difficult because the first group to arrive at 6 PM are still dining. 730 would have probably been a better time. We always dine at the earliest time available. Leaves us enough time to have dessert or a small snack later in the evening
Thank you for the excellent review. I'm going on my 2nd VV cruise in Dec, and I have two 15-day cruises booked next year. I just LOVE ❤️ the food on VV. But as far as the Wake, I gave it a 5/5. In fact, all the restaurants and other food venues, in my opinion, were a 5/5. I didn't try the test kitchen bc I know I would not like the food. In my opinion, if anyone sails on VV and said they starved on this cruise line, didn't sail on Virgin.
We were on Valiant Lady a month ago. I agree with most of your opinions on the food. The Wake for us was exceptional, we went the first night and also for brunch. We liked the Test Kitchen and we had menu B which is on the 2nd half of the 7 night cruise. We enjoyed it. In our experience and maybe it was just what we ordered Extra Virgin was our least favorite. The carbonara arrived like a bowl of pasta and cheese soup, I did not finish it. Pink Agave was just ok, BUT THE CHOCOLATE TACOS were delicious. Razzle dazzle we went for brunch and lunch and it was good but nothing extra ordinary. Overall we were happy with all the food choices including The Dock, we thought Gun Bae was fun, but the food was just ok. Where we were disappointed is some of the food in the galley when we went for quick breakfast or late lunch. The food in the galley seemed just ok. On the last morning my order never arrived. And at times places in the galley were closed mid afternoon or early evening. If you didn’t want a sit down meal in one of the restaurants I think there should have been more options in the galley. Next time we will definitely try the pizza! And the Espresso Martini’s in the Grounds Club were very good!

As someone who has sailed Virgin on a transatlantic cruise let me say that was a very good report. It's real unfortunate that your experience at the Wake was not very good. Listening to what you said. I would be disappointed as well. But let me assure you my three meals in there for dinner and our two for Brunch were FANTASTIC! Only at brunch can you get Crepe Pancakes. I think your ONLY problem was that you took a short trip. You obviously needed more time.
Wow! A transatlantic on Virgin would be a dream come true! My wife and I are dying to do a transatlantic, but between our limited time off and our old man pup who is physically challenged, it would be quite tough to pull off. We will be going on Virgin this coming June, but unfortunately for only 4 days. The good thing is we won't be gone too long.
No, Guy's burger is better BUT you are correct, the fries are the best we have ever had. Found the desserts late in the cruise but everything we ate was yummy.
I see that. Really strange. I went back and looked at my video in Final Cut and the audio is in perfect sync, but the exported video has about 1 minute of out-of-sync audio. Thanks for letting me know. Have no idea how that happened.
Sadly, my experience on the Valiant Lady wasn't great in terms of customer service, and the food system. Most was cold and not tasty. The restaurants that needed a reservation only allowed us to make one reservation for the week. I couldn't make breakfast and dinner at Razzle Dazzle or even do Gunbae more than once.
good vid. All of the little 'food places' seem overstimulating! No way to try it all in a 5 nighter. It seems like they have trouble finding the balance between wanting to avoid by standard 'buffet' thus they put everything on small plates, fostering that 'street food' vibe--but the problem with this is that small-plates get cold very quickly. Tbh, I have no issues with my food co-mingling with similar food prior to being plated for me, anything to keep it hot. But this is no deal breaker. Eventually we'll probably do VV. I like the bar-tab concept. We're not big drinkers, but I'd have no problem doing something like a $100 bar tab. I'd need to study the use it or lose it aspect. Seemingly, anything leftover should not be lost... Much of their marketing, at least earlier, was geared towards 20 and 30something hardbodies. They should probably re-vamp it and just make it aimed at adults of all ages.
Never been on Virgin (and may well never do so since none are based withing driving distance) but this was still very interesting, thank you. Things are definitely different on the red ships, aren't they? Just a couple of FYIs - On Carnival ships the pizzeria crew will make a custom pizza for you if you ask, and... 'Impossible Burgers' ... You only have to check the long ingredient lists for products from Impossible, Beyond, etc, to see that they're extremely processed, full of inflammatory substances, and include ingredients that were never meant to be eaten. I know you were just doing it for the sake of your viewers but, now you're taken one for the team, I hope you'll stick to real meat! :)
Just got off the Scarlet Lady yesterday. Very disappointed. What you dont know is that the “rock Star” status people get first crack at the restaurants and by the time we got on board and could use their app ALL of the restaurants were sold out. We got on and went straight to the reservations girl…(Long Line) As well as ALL of the entertainment. They only have a very small stage and very little seating fore entertainment, and the show was only done twice. We were able to get one reservation at the Mexican restaurant “Agave”, which was OK but not great. And we had one reservation at “Test Kitchen” where chefs combine foods that have no business being served together. Other that her we ate everything at the “Galley” where you stand in line with your plate for the one main dish they’re scooping that night. I couldn’t wait to get off. We’ve done over 30 cruises and this is the worst one we’ve been on. We wont be back.
Will be on Virgin this coming June, my wife and I don't find it too appealing. Well, it's more her since she tends to be the picky eater. That mushroom thing looks great, but she hates mushrooms. Doesn't seem like there is a lot for her on that menu.
My wife and I did not like most of the food in the specialty restaurants! Some of the food in the galley was ok. It was also the worst cruise we have ever taken. We could not wait to get off and we will not be trying them again. Worst experience ever!!!

@@CruiseReport well, we stayed in a suite which gave us access to richards roof top and we had a butler. That part was ok. Every bar we went to did not know how to make a mixed drink except on the roof top bar, so I had to drink beer. Got tired of wasting money. The food was not the best in most of the restaurants and the staff was not interested in making us feel like they cared. The last straw was when a bar attendant did not want to take my drink order. I went to customer service to complain. I spoke with the head of the bars and the head of the cruise ship. I told them I wanted nothing I just needed to vent. They apologized and promised us things at dinner on two different nights and we never received anything. We were just over the cruise and ready to get off the ship, oh and the entertainment was lacking!! It’s just a different style of cruising and it’s just not for us. I think everyone should give it a try for themselves.
Please with all due respect stop saying this and that is free, you already paid for that. Nothing in free in life. The alcoholic drinks and some special items are extra, but you already paid for everything else 😊
With all due respect I think what he meant was that on Virgin the specialty restaurants are FREE as compared to all other cruise lines. Indeed, Virgin does not nickel and dime you because everything's included in the base fare except alcohol which by the way is fairly priced.

But, nope on the other cruises I went waters, soda and fancy restaurants were additional cost. Many things that are included on Virgin with the price you already paid is not included on other cruise lines. It's important to stress "this is free and that is free" to people who have cruises on other cruise lines. Hope that makes sense. Bye 😁👋🏽

Unfortunately, we did not try room service, but everything we have read or seen on UA-cam indicates that it is very good. We found the food to be perfectly seasoned and not too salty for our tastes.
I hope you’ll give the wake another shot next time you’re on board. I’d have to say that was my very favorite restaurant and we did have dinner there one evening and breakfast/brunch every morning. The salt crusted Dorado was amazing and I would take the cruise all over again just for that one meal. In fact, we are going on valiant lady for my birthday in January! Breakfast/brunch is amazing at the week as well. They offer three different types of eggs Benedict! I think were things might’ve went wrong for you was your choice of dining time. 7 PM is difficult because the first group to arrive at 6 PM are still dining. 730 would have probably been a better time. We always dine at the earliest time available. Leaves us enough time to have dessert or a small snack later in the evening
We definitely will, and we will do the brunch as well. I think we just hit on a bad night.
You just have to ask for the vegetarian menu at Test Kitchen. We had a vegetarian with us on our last sailing and he enjoyed it.
Thank you for the excellent review. I'm going on my 2nd VV cruise in Dec, and I have two 15-day cruises booked next year. I just LOVE ❤️ the food on VV. But as far as the Wake, I gave it a 5/5. In fact, all the restaurants and other food venues, in my opinion, were a 5/5. I didn't try the test kitchen bc I know I would not like the food. In my opinion, if anyone sails on VV and said they starved on this cruise line, didn't sail on Virgin.

We were on Valiant Lady a month ago. I agree with most of your opinions on the food. The Wake for us was exceptional, we went the first night and also for brunch. We liked the Test Kitchen and we had menu B which is on the 2nd half of the 7 night cruise. We enjoyed it. In our experience and maybe it was just what we ordered Extra Virgin was our least favorite. The carbonara arrived like a bowl of pasta and cheese soup, I did not finish it. Pink Agave was just ok, BUT THE CHOCOLATE TACOS were delicious. Razzle dazzle we went for brunch and lunch and it was good but nothing extra ordinary. Overall we were happy with all the food choices including The Dock, we thought Gun Bae was fun, but the food was just ok. Where we were disappointed is some of the food in the galley when we went for quick breakfast or late lunch. The food in the galley seemed just ok. On the last morning my order never arrived. And at times places in the galley were closed mid afternoon or early evening. If you didn’t want a sit down meal in one of the restaurants I think there should have been more options in the galley. Next time we will definitely try the pizza! And the Espresso Martini’s in the Grounds Club were very good!

As someone who has sailed Virgin on a transatlantic cruise let me say that was a very good report.
It's real unfortunate that your experience at the Wake was not very good. Listening to what you said. I would be disappointed as well. But let me assure you my three meals in there for dinner and our two for Brunch were FANTASTIC! Only at brunch can you get Crepe Pancakes.
I think your ONLY problem was that you took a short trip. You obviously needed more time.
Wow! A transatlantic on Virgin would be a dream come true! My wife and I are dying to do a transatlantic, but between our limited time off and our old man pup who is physically challenged, it would be quite tough to pull off. We will be going on Virgin this coming June, but unfortunately for only 4 days. The good thing is we won't be gone too long.
No, Guy's burger is better BUT you are correct, the fries are the best we have ever had. Found the desserts late in the cruise but everything we ate was yummy.

Sadly, my experience on the Valiant Lady wasn't great in terms of customer service, and the food system. Most was cold and not tasty. The restaurants that needed a reservation only allowed us to make one reservation for the week. I couldn't make breakfast and dinner at Razzle Dazzle or even do Gunbae more than once.
good vid. All of the little 'food places' seem overstimulating! No way to try it all in a 5 nighter. It seems like they have trouble finding the balance between wanting to avoid by standard 'buffet' thus they put everything on small plates, fostering that 'street food' vibe--but the problem with this is that small-plates get cold very quickly. Tbh, I have no issues with my food co-mingling with similar food prior to being plated for me, anything to keep it hot. But this is no deal breaker. Eventually we'll probably do VV. I like the bar-tab concept. We're not big drinkers, but I'd have no problem doing something like a $100 bar tab. I'd need to study the use it or lose it aspect. Seemingly, anything leftover should not be lost...
Much of their marketing, at least earlier, was geared towards 20 and 30something hardbodies. They should probably re-vamp it and just make it aimed at adults of all ages.
Never been on Virgin (and may well never do so since none are based withing driving distance) but this was still very interesting, thank you. Things are definitely different on the red ships, aren't they?
Just a couple of FYIs - On Carnival ships the pizzeria crew will make a custom pizza for you if you ask, and...
'Impossible Burgers' ... You only have to check the long ingredient lists for products from Impossible, Beyond, etc, to see that they're extremely processed, full of inflammatory substances, and include ingredients that were never meant to be eaten. I know you were just doing it for the sake of your viewers but, now you're taken one for the team, I hope you'll stick to real meat! :)
We agree The Wake is our least favorite restaurant on the ship. (Secret Tip for next time, Extra Virgin has the best steak on the ship)

Gunbae looks like my idea of Hell. I’m an introvert who doesn’t drink. When you say “You MUST go to Gunbae”l..no, no I don’t.
Not in my opinion. Specialty restaurants were not that special. I preferred normal dinning on all the RC cruises i have been on.

The best dishes and worst dishes I've ever had on a cruise were both on a virgin ship. I'm more foodie curious than an actual foodie.
Just got off the Scarlet Lady yesterday. Very disappointed. What you dont know is that the “rock Star” status people get first crack at the restaurants and by the time we got on board and could use their app ALL of the restaurants were sold out. We got on and went straight to the reservations girl…(Long Line)
As well as ALL of the entertainment. They only have a very small stage and very little seating fore entertainment, and the show was only done twice.
We were able to get one reservation at the Mexican restaurant “Agave”, which was OK but not great. And we had one reservation at “Test Kitchen” where chefs combine foods that have no business being served together.
Other that her we ate everything at the “Galley” where you stand in line with your plate for the one main dish they’re scooping that night.
I couldn’t wait to get off. We’ve done over 30 cruises and this is the worst one we’ve been on. We wont be back.
Avoid the test kitchen that’s all I can say 😩
Will be on Virgin this coming June, my wife and I don't find it too appealing. Well, it's more her since she tends to be the picky eater. That mushroom thing looks great, but she hates mushrooms. Doesn't seem like there is a lot for her on that menu.

My wife and I did not like most of the food in the specialty restaurants! Some of the food in the galley was ok. It was also the worst cruise we have ever taken. We could not wait to get off and we will not be trying them again. Worst experience ever!!!

@@CruiseReport well, we stayed in a suite which gave us access to richards roof top and we had a butler. That part was ok. Every bar we went to did not know how to make a mixed drink except on the roof top bar, so I had to drink beer. Got tired of wasting money. The food was not the best in most of the restaurants and the staff was not interested in making us feel like they cared. The last straw was when a bar attendant did not want to take my drink order. I went to customer service to complain. I spoke with the head of the bars and the head of the cruise ship. I told them I wanted nothing I just needed to vent. They apologized and promised us things at dinner on two different nights and we never received anything. We were just over the cruise and ready to get off the ship, oh and the entertainment was lacking!! It’s just a different style of cruising and it’s just not for us. I think everyone should give it a try for themselves.

Lick me til Ice Cream is indeed Gelato, made on the ship. Sip Lounge High Tea was a disappointment. Brunch at the Wake, worth the visit!

With all due respect I think what he meant was that on Virgin the specialty restaurants are FREE as compared to all other cruise lines. Indeed, Virgin does not nickel and dime you because everything's included in the base fare except alcohol which by the way is fairly priced.
@@joanbelmont5450 Hi 👋🏽. Do you go on different cruise lines? I have only been on 3. All three said it was all inclusive. And I thought I already paid. But, nope on the other cruises I went waters, soda and fancy restaurants were additional cost. Many things that are included on Virgin with the price you already paid is not included on other cruise lines. It's important to stress "this is free and that is free" to people who have cruises on other cruise lines. Hope that makes sense. Bye 😁👋🏽
