I've been reading the book and I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand how a father who is enjoys rejecting people can injure his daughter. After rejecting Lisa completely when she was small, Jobs gradually accepted her into his life, but she was always terrified that he would reject her and abandon her. Lisa was focused on her father because he was her father, but his wealth and fame also magnified her fascination and her fear of his rejection. Tough read.

well I think we should look at it from an objective perspective. Steve and his partner were not married and hence his concerns that he may not be the real father were genuine. He maybe knew about her character. I mean we are talking about 1980s when technology was not very advanced. He had only his partner's words. Such things are complicated. But later he left her an inheritance.

You learn to live with it but ever so often it surfaces.
He had lots of holes in his life which he wrapped around every bit of his personal life.
People distance themselves from others who should be important to them , most times to avoid being hurt.

There was something very wrong with Steve Jobs. From reading several books, it seems clear that not only did he feel rejected by his birth parents, but there were also issues with his adoptive parents. In one of the books, his mother said she could not bond with him as a baby because she felt the birth mother might come back for him and even as a toddler, she wanted to give him up. Lack of bonding with a mother has severe consequences.

I agree. I thought this was a terrible interview. The book was so well-written and to be honest it was a profound story regardless of her father being Steve Jobs (it reminds me of Glass Castle in a way). It seems like Hoda was just trying to sensationalize the "steve jobs" part of the story when the book wasn't really about him. It was about a struggling little girl who had two parents that often didn't act like mature adults. This book was terrific and again had very little to do with the fact her dad was famous.

I read the book and thought it was excellent. She deserves a lot of credit for making it on her own, as does her mom imo for bringing her up as a single mom for the most part. Steve would kick in money occasionally and finally gave child support, but he could have been so much more generous.

You are not correct. After Jobs finally acknowldged Lisa when she was six, he supported her and her mother more than adequately when Lisa was growing up, but he was not someone that Lisa could count on, and he cut her off when she was in college. Lisa was always afraid that JObs would abandon her on which.

I just finished reading the book about 15 minutes ago. Lisa, thank you for sharing it and opening yourself up to the world about the good and bad in your relationships. Even now, if I could have the chance to speak with you about some if the inner workings of some of those relationships, the primary focus would be on you, not so much on Steve, but you as you faced the loneliness.
During your session with Dr. Lake, Steve and your step-mom, when she said, “We’re cold people,” and you were flabbergasted. I want to delve more into that moment and the aftershocks from that revelation. It seemed Lorene could have sympathetic moments of warmth that your father could not, but those moments were few and far between. I felt that in many ways, you were Cinderella but there was no Prince to save you. You saved yourself. Your steadfast determination and resilience made you a great student and your hard work paid off. You did it yourself, and I, a stranger to you, I am proud of you.
If you ever read this: thank you again, and all my love to your mom and Mona. Take care.
    ~Doctor Scott

Unfortunately in the yr 2012 aged 62 murdered by his second wife which was the most heartbreakingly shocking for us. I can understand how much of emotional problems she'd have endured growing up

    • @thepurpleufo

Hello. Yes, I've got the book and have read it. Before that, I read the book written by her mother, Chrisann Brennan (Steve's girlfriend). We all read and hear things differently...and maybe my feelings are affected by my reading of Chrisann's book, which was more openly resentful...but I thought they both were somewhat vengeful (even though say they are not)...and are criticizing a guy who isn't here to defend himself...if Jobs actually *would* bother to defend himself. I think a lot of this is (as happens so often) "about the money"...and in fact, in Chrisann's book, money is a topic that comes up over and over and over. I believe Lisa and Chrisann loved Steve Jobs, but I think there was a lot of anger and resentment and there still *is*. Nothing wrong with being angry and resentful...but so often they have given the impression that Steve Jobs did nothing for them, but that's not true. It's also possible that my feelings are affected by the fact that I am also an "absent father"...who had to deal with a resentful ex-wife, who could have done a better job of not turning my children against me...even though I went way above and beyond anything specified by the divorce court settlement. I've always loved my kids, but it would be easy for my ex-wife (and my children) to paint a bad picture of me. Maybe that's how it was for Steve Jobs, too. Apparently, he was a jerk in many ways. But he was also Steve Jobs. No one is perfect.
