BATTLETECH: HEAVY MECHS

  • The third part in our series going over Battlemechs in the Succession Wars era. Battletech's most iconic mechs mostly reside inside the space of the the Heavy Mech roster for the most part. Warhammers, Marauders, Archers, Riflemans and so many others are here.
Coveted and used sparingly by the Free World's League, Draconis Combine, Federated Suns, Lyran Commonwealth, and Capellan Confederation, these mechs operate as the elite of most mech forces, and are typically the largest battlemechs people will see...
Unless they have the privilege of meeting and Assault Mech.

You can fulfill all battlefield roles with mediums and heavies and still be very successful. These two classes is where I like to put almost all my battle value particularly in the 3025 era. Thunderbolts, warhammers, orions and marauders are what really got me into this game.

I think heavy mech wise, I didn't really like them as a kid, but as an adult, I think the Warhammer is one of my favourite mechs. I'm still not fully sold on the Marauder as I think it has heat issues, but I think the 3M is amazing.

Especially in 3025 Assault Mechs very much have a role on the field.
There is much less firepower to go around over all, so they actually
will last a considerable ammount of time even versus several enemies.
And an AC20 is something not many Mediums or even Heavies can use.
And at that Techlevel actually something to be feared and not scoffed at.
With higher tech levels, being harder to hit becomes much more important
than having the armor to simply shrug off any non crit hit.

@@BigRed40TECH If you are piloting a vanilla 3R you have to hold back on your firepower. That said, being able to unload 2 PPCs and a AC/5 when an juicy target presents itself is great. Honestly, my biggest complaint about the Marauder is the AC/5. Just having one ammunition based weapon makes heat management a bigger priority due to the possibility of ammo explosions. Also autocannons have horrible weight vs damage ratio. Any design that rips out the AC is an upgrade, though most of them make the mistake of using missiles in its place. The 3D is a good design, simply because it gets rid of the ammo.
My personal favorite modification of a 3R is to rip out all of the weapons. Instead of the PPC and medium laser in each arm, 2 large lasers for a total payload of 4 large lasers. Add 5 heat sinks to account for the left over weight. While this shortens the reach of the Marauder, with only 3 heat being built up per turn it makes it into a long range monster that outclasses other Marauders and other snipers, putting it on equal footing to an Awesome in my opinion.

@@Chris_Sizemore I don't know too much about the boardgames as I've only played the most recent battletech, but stripping the lasers completely and having 2 uac5 and a uac2 mean that you can core even some solid assault mechs with an almost certian chance to hit the centre. And they still have decent armour and plenty of ammo for longer engagements. Its basically every turn it gets a kill, regardless of what the target it.

Easily one of the best parts of BT in regards to unit design is that there are plentiful examples of mechs that are bad for all the right reasons.
Be it the last-ditch superweapons of a megalomaniachal tyrant or ideas that seemed sensible at the onset and then plainly didn't work out, there's examples of mechs sucking by the same mechanisms that result in bad AFVs in real life.

1 st and most important, it was my best paint job. One time I just hit the dry brushing so right. I wasn't a great painter, but it was my most satisfying to achieve.

My heart has always belonged to the venerable Thunderbolt. There’s just something about the off-centre cockpit and shoulder mounted LRM rack that does it for me.
And it has a weapon for each range bracket with the armor to survive long enough to bring them all to bear. Good variants too, the 5SE for hopping around and the 5S for some PPC sniping.

Heavy Mechs. If there was a wrestling championship in Battletech, these would be classed as the heavyweights.
Enough armour to survive a critical core explosion of an enemy. Enough firepower to cripple or outright vaporise anything below its weight class or equivalent. Enough speed to chase down and hunt it’s lighter brethren. It is truly the best of all aspects.
Warhammer, Thunderbolt, Catapult, BlackKnight, Marauder, Rifleman, names that inspire fear and admiration amongst the warriors during the succession wars. Hell, certain pilots that are synonymous with a mech like Natasha Kerensky in her patented Warhammer “Black Widow” send waves of dread to opposing forces. Just the sight of the 70 ton machine sounds a klaxon to all to evacuate the battlefield. When you’ve reached that kind of notoriety, you know it’s for a reason.

  • @rh352

The Marauder is probably my absolute favorite mech in the entire franchise, but honestly most of my favorites are heavy mechs. Medium mechs are just fine, but they have to sacrifice a lot more to really shine in any one role. Heavy mechs, on the other hand, have the tonnage available to either excel in a single role or fill several roles well without having any crippling drawbacks. Plus they are still have at least decent speed. One of my more obscure favorites is the DRG-1G Dragon/Grand Dragon (I like PPCs much more than autocannons personally).
And if you allow custom configurations, heavy mechs absolutely cannot be beat!

In MW 5 my first heavy was a badly mauled Marauder I picked up out of a shop.I was unable to replace it's destroyed load out so I gave it a heavy rifle and two Large lasers with two mediums to back it up. Upgrading the parts along the way led to my personal Mech The Nevermore. Sure heavy rifles are outdated, but it has long range and heavy damage and fits in the same slot as the AC-5 for around the same weight. The range says 825m max,but that's a suggestion to a heavy rifle with a good shot behind the trigger.

I loved my Cat load out from the early days of MWO. 6 LRM 15s, a downsized engine, stripped armour and jumpjets to save on weight. It was a glass cannon but those Alpha Strikes would devastate almost anything they hit. Had an engagement with an enemy Atlas that was busy pummeling a friendly, but hopelessly battered and outgunned, Highlander who was drawing the enemy fire. I'd been dismissed as a non-threat due to his ECM and twin AMS. I couldn't get a missile lock and at ~250m I said "screw it" and hit the trigger anyway letting fly with a 90 LRM shotgun blast. Let's just say that got his attention. The best part was when I SOMEHOW managed to perfectly dodge what should have been an effortless deathblow and managed a second, fatal, 90 LRM Salvo. I got beautiful front row view of that Atlas going up and the Highlander looking at me like "The Hell WAS that?!" as I barely missed a catastrophic overheat and avoided ammo racking myself.

One AC 20 anywhere but the center torso was basically an instant kill. I had 7 tons of ammo for a total of 14 total shots. Light mechs died instantly. Mediums typically went up in 1, but depending on angle or model they might need a finisher. Heavies and Assaults were typically 2 or 3. That low mobility and paper thin armour caused me to die more than a few times if I got out flanked or caught out of position. The low ammo had me trying to figure out how to provide support sometimes too. Had one mission I ran out completely, flanked the enemy position and was wedging my shoulder into the backs of assault mechs to keep them in the open. Helped my team take down an Atlas and an Awesome and was working on a Stalker before the hostile figured out I was even there.

My favorite mech in this class is the Thunderbolt in some variants. I especially like a variant with 8 medium pulse lasers. It needs a lot of heatsinks and still has a heatsink problem. . And a bigger engine. But the brutal firepower at short range more than makes up for it. It's a very tactical mech, but with a good starting position a killer, you just need to be able to aim well, so this variant needs a steady hand and thoughtful planning to be maximally effective in e.g. Mechwarrior online, or Mechwarrior 5 Mercs. The difficulty, as with all brawlers, is getting close to the enemy first, but once you're there, well......then you "bludgeon at least one or two opponents before they seriously get over the scare!" This variant is not directly in the lore. But there is at least one mech warrior in two books that uses a Thunderbolt converted this way (He shoots down three enemies, and then dies because his reactor shuts down......ähm, but saves his comrades in the process).. But even the lore-correct variants are all great mechs.

heavys are my favorites i have my top 4
    1. Guillotine: one of the most deadly heavies you will ever see.. the GLT-8D (3062) is for me that mech
    2. Grasshopper: similar to the Guillotine but with hands and LRMs GHR-5N (3040) is my favored variant
    3. Cataphract: when i first seen it in MWO the new design (the old design was comically bad) it looks like a mini bloodasp, the cata also spawned the Caesar which is also a good mech
    4. My own homebrew mech (its currently un named, and is 75 tons) but in my lore its designed to be a DIRECT competitor and alternative to the marauder

Positioning and speed are the biggest powers in Battletech. Firepower matters, so does armour, don't get me wrong, but the former 2 are really, really dangerous.

Orion. Why? Because it's the mech that brought the usurper to his knees. Cataphract is also a good one because it came from a place of desperation for heavy mechs. It's a bit of a frankenmech but I still love it.

Heavies suffer from one flaw. Specialization. They are excellent at what they do but if battlefield circumstances do not favor them, they are more of a liability than an asset.
The least specialized heavy is the Whammer so it gets kudos for its range of variants. The best looking and most kinky heavy is one that isn't apparent until you get hit by fusion inducing plasma and shells the size of a human head from a Marauder amongst the distant tree line.
Heavies straddle the angles of the competence triangle. Firepower, Armor, Speed. You can excel at one, be mediocre at two but can never have all three.
IMO I'd rather have two mediums or medium and a light in place of one heavy, both capable together to check all the boxes. Heavies are also prone to being primary targets simply because if they are in their ideal situations, they can eliminate anything humanity has to offer sans orbital bombardment.
