Back in the 1991 Leinster Gaelic football championship, Dublin and Meath had to go to a replay three times! Across the four games there was a total attendance of 237,000, and in the end, Meath won the fourth match by a single point.

It is not unusual for a GAA final match to go to a replay, or even a replay of a replay after a further draw, just to get a result. That has happened! As for the supporters sitting peacefully side by side, it is worth noting that there were two finals games played that day - a minor final followed by this senior final. That means there could have been up to four different counties teams playing, and maybe four sets of supporters sitting side by side in the stands.

    • @STHFGDBY
      @STHFGDBY 2 роки тому

@@RobReacts1 That's impossible. They are like gold dust. Many fans are season ticket holders and they pay a lot of money for that privilege. But there are rules attached. They must attend so many games throughout the season or they will not receive a renewal. And the GAA do release a fixed amount of tickets for the public, but they are snatched up very quickly. The main battle the GAA have is ticket touts that buy up tickets, especially for match finals, and sell them for anything up to 800 euros for them. But new laws and crackdowns have had a good negative impact on these criminals.

They call him 'King Henry' down there, this was towards the tail end of his career as he retired after this season. This years victory (maybe thats a spoiler alert lol) won him his tenth All-Ireland winners medal, which is the record. Think you may be forgetting... but up to 2010, if the English FA Cup final ended in a draw, it went to a replay, with the last final to go to a replay being in 1993.
The GAA are very seeped in tradition, and this rule will probably never be changed.
As an association that filters right down to the community and parish level, the GAA invest a lot of money it earns back into the grassroots level, and one of it's biggest incomes come from the All-Ireland Final.
82,000 tickets nets about €7 million for the association, and I think they secretly hope that every final will end in a draw, so they can sell another 82,000 tickets 2 weeks later!
Obviously, if the replay ends in a draw, extra time & penalties decide the outcome

Sorry Liam you are wrong their has never been an option for penalties in football or hurling if that was the case explane the the games that went to two three replays for instance Dublin v Meath 4 games and no penaltie shootout it neve happen I did see it mentioned that for the first time ever this summer the GAA announced that if their was draw in the semi finals or finals extra time and penalties would be used but I can guarantee you that will most likely nor stand once the pandemic is over because the GAA get more revenue and us fans even if we hardley have a hope in hell of getting a ticket can see it on TV another 70 minutes of end to end magic no holds barred end to end amazing skills and you only have to look at other countries reaction to these amazing Irish sports they are all discovering what we have known for thousands of years our games especially hurling has non equal anywhere on earth its beyond unique and I say this often for a small country with less than 7 million people to get tens of thousands to attend our games up to over 80000 is incredible the only other sport in Ireland to fill croke park was the rugby Internationals and Heineken Cup games the soccer game played at croke park never filled the stadium except maybe when Brazil played? But now that the AVIA replaced the old Lansdown Road I think 🤔rugby and soccer would not be allowed to play anywhere else because AVIA wouldn't be happy to pay so much just to see them play in another stadium so another championship is over the curse lives on delighted for Tyrone very disappointed for Mayo like most of Ireland I was cheering for Mayo today by the way the last Mayo player from that 1951 cursed team is 95

Why not go to a replay? If neither team can win in 70 minutes then where's the reason for giving them a few minutes more?? Better to give them another 70 minutes to test their skills against each other. Also it's another chance for 80,000 people to have a great day out. I smiled when you commented on the fans mixing!! It's a small country and both those counties are neighbours so a lot of the opposing fans would be related and it wouldn't be unusual for them to be from the same family.

AFL: We use to have a GF-replay if it was a drawn game. It wasn't until '2016' that the grand final replay was abolished. As for other finals matches, drawn grand finals are now resolved with two five-minute periods of extra time; if the scores are still tied at the end of the extra time period, play will continue until the next score.

The reason it goes for a replay is because it will be worth around 8 million to the GAA with ticket sales alone. That's why I always back the draw at 9/1 in paddy powers 😂

Ah Rob, love your love for Hurling it's wonderful.
I love a replay. It means we get to do it all again!🤣 As an English man, I can't believe you think penis are fair either 😁
The next time they would add extra time.
You should see can you find The Toughest Trade. They take Gaelic footballers and Hurlers and swap them into different sports, see how they get on.
The lads are amateur technically, but they are at a similar level to alot of professional players.
One scene where a hurler catches the baseball, bare handed and the yanks are mesmerised. That coach said he had the best hand to eye coordination he ever saw.
And now that you understand a bit about the game....
For a very big laugh please watch the skit Gift Grub on Sky sports first hurling coverage. It's side splitting stuff.!

The 1993 hurling league final between Cork and Wexford went to a second replay and there have been many more finals being decided after a replay.
It's probably better than a penalty shoot out (or similar) it would be cruel to leave a missed penalty decided it... or just slightly more cruel than having them do it again

Hi Rob I think this might help you to understand our attitude to replays for starters GAA fans would not be happy with penalties settling a game the 2nd reason you get to see another amazing game the replay if there is another draw but then they play extra time if its still a draw then happy days another reply in the 80s Dublin against Meath in gaelic football the Leinster football championship had to go to 5 games to decide a winner and I think Meath only won by one point over 300000 fans attended those games its a big source if revenue for the GAA they have over 2000 GAA clubs in Irelands 32 counties aboutb750000 members each club has it own grounds then each county has a stadium big enough to hold a championship game the biggest outside of Dublin is semple stadium it use to hold 65000 but even before the pandemic was reduced to about 50000 the GAA is the richest amateur association in the world and nearly forgot all the county players play fir their local club the best players from the clubs I'm all 32vm county's can be picked by the county selectors to play for their county the cannot play for any other county only the one they were born in there ui an old joke in Ireland the FAI the soccer people is a professional organisation run by amateurs The GAA are an amateur association run by professionals 🙂🙂🙂

I have to say I agree with you that replays in a final doesn't feel right.
Especially in an amateur sport. Its the only game of the season where they draw 82,300 people to a single game. There are double headers and gaelic football games that can fill Croke Park but its only the All Ireland Final that can fill Croke Park on its own for a hurling match.
So much money for an amateur game.
