HUGE LIKE from me! Damn I love seeing people "get" Rush. I am an amateurs bass player, and if you have ever tried to play the bass line on this song it is fire. A lot of the sounds you are hearing are actually the bass. What is crazy is Geddy actually singing this, playing these complex bass lines, and live he would hit the sinth part with his feet! Absolutely nuts! If you haven't done so already I'm going to recommend some deep tracks: Jacob's Ladder, the Camera Eye, Bravado, Manhattan Project, Natural Science, the Trees, Chemistry, Red Sector A, Marathon, Distant Early Warning, The Pass, Different Strings, Seven Cities of Gold, the Garden...oh dear lord this list could go on forever. Have fun with it man, love your take. More Rush and I'll be back with likes and send my friends and family for subs.
wanna hear Rush do rap? Listen to roll the bones. Country and western: cold fire truly remarkable group open to all musical influences, have been a fan since I bought their 1977 album Farewell to Kings
Sounds like an Ai or a machine trying to understand and explain feelings as if experimenting it for the first time and being overwhelmed by the experience ... That was written in 1981
This has a neat sequencer section- what sounds like the cycling computer heartbeat- but the sequencer section in the Grand Designs song on their Power Windows album is INCREDIBLE.
In the Moving Pictures tour book, Peart added: "'Vital Signs' was the ultimate result, eclectic in the extreme, it embraces a wide variety of stylistic influences, ranging from the sixties to the present. Lyrically, it derives from my response to the terminology of 'Technospeak,' the language of electronics and computers, which often seems to parallel the human machine, in the functions and interrelationships they employ. It is interesting, if irrelevant, to speculate as to whether we impose our nature on the machines that we build, or whether they are merely governed by the inscrutable laws of Nature as we. (Perhaps Murphy's Laws?) Never mind!
Vital Signs...is new wave style music that became prevalent in the late 70s. A style hated by Rush fans and the only new wave song they ever did. But the joke was on the fans. "Got to elevate from the norm". That's what Rush did with the music composition. Quite clever.
like the reggae influence the lyrics, as a college science/engineering major at the time, were transcendent the lyrics are so open to interpretation, an observation of nature, applied personally, enduring
Very cool that you’re digging a little deeper into Rush! One of my favs is Natural Science- from the Permanent Waves album that just preceded Moving Pictures. I’ll be watching for your react to that one!
If your going to react to 2112 I highly recommend the graphic comic version. It's like watching a movie to one of Rush's most iconic songs. New subscriber love your insights to Rush. Looking forward to watching your backlog of reactions.❤
A that time, 1981, they were transitioning to a new sound and this tune is a great example of their creativity. They sound like...Rush, a gender by them selves. Good reaction. Keep on.
Play the whole album ,thats thing with Rush from beginning to the end of the album is off the charts play A Farwell to kings whole album hemispheres whole album, permanent waves whole album, or try test for echo, driven, half the world, big money, lock and key, turn the page, Animate, cut to the chase, roll the bones,i think youll like all of them lol i could go on and on and on and on Any Rush is good Rush!!!!
In this time frame the band was highly influenced by the police. Neil especially was fascinated with Stewart Copeland the drummer an emulated him quite a bit in their music. If you listen to everything on moving pictures and on permanent waves you'll get a lot of this sound.
I love all the big hits, but I’m drawn to their “side 2” songs. If you haven’t listened to it yet, check out The Camera Eye, which is also on side 2 of this album (Moving pictures.) It’s so complex they wouldn’t play it live for years because they couldn’t do it justice. Rush did have a strong reggae influence during this period of their career. You’ll hear it a lot on the Signals and Grace Under Pressure albums too.
A brief story about The Weapon. From what I've learned Geddy & one of his other friends were experimenting with the synthesizer one day and came up with an odd percussion beat. They got Neil to listen to it when he walked in & said "I bet you can't duplicate this". As the story goes that was a mistake. You don't challenge him like that. He worked on it for while & got it. I've heard him say it was hard because he had to train his left hand especially to do something not normal. It was usually something he did with his right hand. That beat is in The Weapon.
The lyrics have double meanings. Neil used words from around the recording studio and applied them to real life “random sample hold the one you need” and “A tired mind become a shape-shifter Everybody need a soft filter Everybody need reverse polarity”
Pardon me Vital Signs isn't part of the fear trilogy. Not sure what I was thinking there. It must be time to go to sleep. It's late here. Anyways, enjoy.
Look...Geddy's bass in this song is freaking flat-out just freaky, grindy, gnarley, throaty, in your face without disgrace...unprecedented bass in your face. Damn it.

absolutely.
An ounce of perception,a pound of obscure,...a little bit of what you (think) you know and alot of what you don't,l love those lyrics
A twist on the adage " an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure
It's music for people who love music. Good reactions.👍👍
Yes, you have to pay attention to the lyrics with Rush. What a monster NP is.
One of my favorite tracks off Moving pictures. Thanks for this reaction The bass and drums on this track really stand out.
Its a 7 way tie for first for me!
Apologies for the loud mic I’ll turn it down !!!

Incredible musical talent with these three guys. Highly unlikely we will ever see another band like RUSH
You're absolutely right

Best band ever. What is that? I believe it was Geddy's Oberheim synthesiser playing an arpeggio.
yeah RUSH!
Loving this since 1982
This has a neat sequencer section- what sounds like the cycling computer heartbeat- but the sequencer section in the Grand Designs song on their Power Windows album is INCREDIBLE.
RUSH #1 ❤
This is a banger!
Definitely check out Entre Nous. It has some of the best lyrics that Neil ever wrote that are still relevant to this day.
“Random sample, hold the one you need.”
Straight from the lyrics.

Neil is just killing it on this one!
Respect man, been a fan since 78. They have something not many other bands have and that's imagination versatility and musicianship all in one
like the reggae influence
the lyrics, as a college science/engineering major at the time, were transcendent
the lyrics are so open to interpretation, an observation of nature, applied personally, enduring
I did an Essay on this song back in English Class in College back in the late 1980s

“Random sample, hold the one you need.”
Man you are learning everything you said was spot on welcome to the rush rabbit hole now listen to rush 2112 and let the goose bumps out
I’ve done it already
Great reaction. Rush is in a league all their own, IMO.

DUDE!!? that's my favorite modern song from Rush, I actually used to cover it in my band, tough song.

the bass line at 2:21 is probably my favorite bass bit in all of music........
Great choice - top twenty Rush song!
Yes, Changes.

Got it on vinyl
Give Circumstances a listen to. I think you'll add it to your Rush playlist as well.

Drum machine pattern Alex was working with, I believe 👍
😂Neil's lyrics are real 😅 welcome to the greatest band of all time keep in mind that he wrote all the lyrics to all the songs
Reaction real like that -p9d1🇹🇭
Great tune!😊
I understand you're excited but never interrupt a Rush fade out. We missed "from the no-o-orm!" 😅
The lyrics have double meanings. Neil used words from around the recording studio and applied them to real life “random sample hold the one you need” and “A tired mind become a shape-shifter
Everybody need a soft filter

Lyrics, try test for echo, it's about media and violence!
Most unique and creative band...ever.
Pardon me Vital Signs isn't part of the fear trilogy. Not sure what I was thinking there. It must be time to go to sleep. It's late here. Anyways, enjoy.
A tired mind become a shape shifter!
Sounds a little bit like the band ,the police"
Your spot on every song is a story 2112 is a freaking master piece give it a listen and read the lyrics yule shit yourself lol
Look...Geddy's bass in this song is freaking flat-out just freaky, grindy, gnarley, throaty, in your face without disgrace...unprecedented bass in your face. Damn it.
They are completely infinite.
