I'll be 77 in 5 days and I've been doing that way of starting a single crochet (and double crochet also) for 60 + years. I still learn many ideas, though, from watching skilled crocheters like you.
That is awesome, the simple ways always endure! So glad you are enjoying crochet. It is true, we really never stop learning when we share with each other.
My mom knew I needed to keep my hands busy, which kept me calm I guess. I tried to teach my own daughter, but it didn't take, now at the age of 27 she is crocheting projects like crazy, self taught on youtube, from other teachers lol. Everyone in their own time and in their own way, I love seeing how different her style is to mine. She says it keeps her calm as well! Creating Art is a beautiful thing 💕
I thought the exact same way you did years ago for the annoying line of 3 chains start on traditional granny squares. Start the square with the last stitch. Invisible. There is a little tweak to it. .From Australia.
Ohhhh wow…..I LOVE this technique! 🙌🧶🙌 I have never liked the thickness/bumpiness the traditional way to join and start a new round gives me. I’m definitely going to be using this technique from now on! Thank you so much for such clear & thorough instructions. Very nice & much appreciated!! Have a fabulous weekend!! 😊🧶🦋💜
If you yarn over twice this can be used for a US double. Holding loose end to the right the tail ends up at top of stitch. I was advised to hang on to the tail till second stitch was completed. With your method the tail is safely tucked in at once.
I just love your channel. It's so clean and fresh. I always try to do a standing stitch at the beginning of any new row, and agree it just looks bulky if you don't. I've also seen a few Tubers slip the very last stitch from the back of the work. So don't do a final slip stitch, just take your hook out and insert into your very first stitch of that round and then pull the loop from the last stitch through the stitch now on the hook. It looks very neat. I also forget to do it, because it hasn't been planted in my memory for 50 years, like the traditional way.
Thanks so much, that is a good suggestion for the finishing of the round. I will use that sometimes when I am continuing with the same colour. I agree with you, I was thinking the other day, I have been crocheting for about 50 years now 🙃 ( yikes ) , and old habits die hard lol. I'm learning new things as well everyday though too, that is the great thing about the crochet community, we love to share 💕
Wow! I thought you were just going to do standing stitches instead (slipknot on the hook then make your stitch as usual). That works well but you do have that knot from the slip knot which some might not like - it’s in the back of the work but still. I’ll have to practice this method, thanks!
Thanks, glad you are going to give it a try. Yes, that knot bugged me too, I figured there had to be a better way. I kinda reverse engineered it to figure out how to not have a knot lol. Thanks for watching.
I've been doing a chain stitch before joining my yarn and it works a charm too. Your method would make the back look better though, I'll try it when I want the back to look nice👍
@@jspcreate oh my gosh, I didn’t mean to sound rude. I’m so sorry! That was really just a note to me to be able to skip to the start when I’m ready to start my next project. That is awesome. I normally see a Standing Single Crochet done with a slip knot on the hook. In this one I do it without the slip knot, as I didn't want the knot there.
Yes, that is right. I used to be an avid knitter and totally forgot I used to cast on without the slipknot sometimes. Thanks so much for noticing this. Enjoy

You can add slip knot to hook and do standing st… easy peasy! I thought thet w all the starting sts that everyone did standing/stacking/alt start sts these days. Like, where has everybody been? Smh 😊
Yep, totally! I don't add the slip knot on purpose because I don't like the knot. Each method has a purpose, so it is good to have alternatives. Thanks for watching.
First time viewing your channel - I subscribed right away! You were very thorough and you have a pleasant voice. I love the color combinations you used here. What pattern were you using? I couldn't really tell if it was one of the patterns you have on your website. Thanks!
Thanks so much, so glad to have you here. This one is not exactly a pattern I have up, but it is very similar to the Zippy Square center or the Little Skye center, but I did change it up a bit to have that extra round in there. It will probably show up in a future square as I like to start alot of my squares with these combo of stitches. Thanks for watching and Enjoy
@jspcreate You could not do a sc if you had no working loop on your hook.. 😉 but this method you show is great too! Always good to learn more ways of doing things. Thanks!
Yes, pretty much, but without the slipknot. This is only for the single crochet, I do it differently for the taller stitches. Tutorials for those will follow.
I usually start a hdc and dc with a beginning ch 2 and a ch 3, so I wouldn’t use this method. The first stitch might be a little scrunched using this way as the beginning chain brings it up to the right height, having said that it would be worth a try.
The classic standing single crochet starts with a slip knot on the hook, in this one I avoided the slip knot and just did a wrap, I didn't like having the knot at the back of my work. Thanks for watching.
It’s an alternative but Standing stitch usually starts with a slip knot. I wanted to avoid the knot. I get alot of requests to repeat lots and go slow hence the length, thanks for watching!
Well, I'm not new to crochet with 62 years experience, and I certainly appreciated that you took your time and slowly explained not only the how, but also the why. 13 minutes is not too long to end 60 years of frustration. Plus, by the end of your lesson, I know how to do it well and don't need to go back and watch it several times to get it to sink in. Thank you, and you now have a new subscriber.

Good idea with the stitch marker, it really helps you find the stitch when you come back around.

You could also start with a standing sc. Do you find it difficult or don't like it?
I don't like the slip knot start usually used in a standing single crochet, this version just eliminates that part, but very similar.

Hi Jane..what kind of yarn do you use?
I use a variety of acrylics from Red Heart, Bernat, Michaels ( Loops and Threads ) and Mary Maxim
Does this work for double crochet too? Half double?
I usually start a hdc and dc with a beginning ch 2 and a ch 3, so I wouldn’t use this method. The first stitch might be a little scrunched using this way as the beginning chain brings it up to the right height, having said that it would be worth a try.
Just do a standing single crochet. What’s the difference between this and that?

I have always disliked the look of the slip stitch connecting a round. Thank you for figuring a way to inhance the look!!!
So glad you found this helpful. It is a nice alternative to the bulk of a regular join
Why not just join the yarn for the new round with a standing single crochet?
The standing single crochet is another alternative, With this one I was trying to avoid having the knot and cut down on the bulk. Thanks for watching.
i see. That make sense!
👏🏻👏🏻🫶
Why can’t you just do a standing sc
The classic Standing Sc starts with a slip knot, I don't like the knot, so I do it this way instead, just makes it less bulky
So, basically a standing stitch. And it only took you 13 MINUTES to explain it.
