Why is R711's whistle so good?

  • Last Saturday K190 left to spend the summer on the Victorian Goldfields Railway, and R711 did a sprint to Seymour. I missed both (had to work!) but got them peacefully drifting through the suburbs. QUESTION: Why is 711's whistle noticeably different to 761 & 707? No prizes for the answer but it would be interesting to know...

the whistle doned by 711 is indeed an ex-D3 whistle from I believe 608. 707 has a proper R whistle, not having worn an S whistle for quite awhile (you can tell when running 707 and 761 together, they're near identicle)

A Beautiful Whistle to match a Beautiful Locomotive!!! Out of all the steam Loco's the Steamrail has, R711 is definately my personal favourite. R711!!!!!!

Because it is based on the interval of a minor 3rd. It is what sad music is based upon and we react emotionally to that sound. Kinda tugs at the heartstrings.

@CSX6000 The loco's were built at the North British Locomotive Company, Glasgow.. If a new whistle(s) were fitted later, they would most likely come from the Newport Workshops, Victoria...

A lot of it is down to the driver who blows the whistle. Each driver has his/her signature quirk while whistling.

Steamrail's Stack talk magazine had an article on West Coast Railway's R Classes in Issue 2, Volume 12, August 2001. In the Article, a driver for West Coast is interviewed and one such question is raised about R711's whistle and I thought part of his answer was quite relevant to the video; "Our problem was finding one that could be heard clearly from the front. The original whistle was a six chime off South Australian Railways 700 class loco 706. You could hear this for miles in every direction except forward, so it went and was replaced by a whistle from a VR J class. This was OK but the boys wanted a six chime so they made one. No-one liked that much so now it is running with a D3 whistle." The D3 whistle he is referring to is probably the one still on the loco.

Australian railways and foreign railways used 1-chime and 5-chime (including China) whistles.

Actually Australian railways used singles, 3 chimes, 5 chimes & 6 chimes

Indeed a lovely whistle. But most VR whistles sound the same to me, some slightly higher pitched-- Ks, D3s, etc. Much preferred the deeper 6-chime Nathan ex- SAR 700/720 whistle that 711 had a while back. Or was it an Rx? Most of the whistles on 'playground' locos in SA were nicked long ago.... not that I'm suggesting anything! Would love to hear whistles from SAR 718 and 747 again. Someone out there has them!

I believe the whistle fitted to R711 when running under WCR control was from SAR loco 706, which I believe was also worn by 4472 when it visited Australia in 1988.

Yes they used many of the same whistles, can sound different due to boiler pressures. IIRC R's are a fair bit higher than k's or D3's?

I believe that it has something to do with the whistle being modified, either added another chamber (sound adjustment) or made it sized differently (tone and sound)

+Boxcarwillie2002 (Whistle Stop 2247) The whistle on in this video is a privately owned whistle. Custom made, not modified.

The whistle on this loco sounds almost identical to the standard New Zealand Government Railway whistle…if it is indeed a privately manufactured whistle could it be that they copied the NZGR item?
