Christina sure, doesn't have the best technique in the industry, but she's always hated and her good days are heavily dismissed. Go to my channel and watch the proofs
That's a myth, and a dangerous one because it sets unrealistic standards for vocalists. Being extra is like a cherry on top of a cake, you CAN be extra but even if you don't be it doesn't undermine your vocal skills. Barbra was NEVER extra with her vocals, but she can school all singers who came after her when it comes to vocal technique and longevity. Interpretation of a song is more important than screaming your lungs out. Once in a while it's cool to be extra but to make that a habit is unhealthy and shouldn't be promoted.
And I know that you're black and your extra-ness comes from Church mostly (talking in vocal terms), but not every great singer has to come from Church. In fact, the gospel genre, as important and respectable it is, isn't everyone's taste and not easy to listen to outside of a stage on records or stuff. I don't mean this in a bad way, but being extra really is overrated. You can croon a sweet lullaby and Jesus will still hear you, you can growl and wail and he still won't if you're just singing for putting up a show. It is about the genuineness and feel in the song and not just about who can scream higher and longer.
rishabhrox1 To piggyback off your own statements, what you have issue with is exactly what makes music art form it is. Artists will always be inspired by those who’ve come before them but that doesn’t necessarily mean trying to duplicate them. Let the artists be the individuals they are and the reason we love them.
1. It depends 2. Make facial espressions helps a lot in singing! 3. I agree, but because I think too much is boring 4. Well, I agree (omg Christina...) 5. AGREE. Why you're a Singer if do you do karaoke? 6. Agree. People can't understand their limits... 7. Omg, so true. I try to explain it (to my family, to my Friends)... But nobody understand how shitty technic their favourite singers use! 8. I don't know... I think it's a personal taste 9. Agree... Well, I think it depends but normally I agree with you 10. AHAHAHAH Sorry for my English, I'm not a native speaker
I'm the only one who think that the Aretha and Celine performance wasn't a random hitted high note but a beautiful collaboration of voice that reminds me to gospel churches? (Sorry for my english🙈)
I watched that show on MTV and no.... That's not how the audiences understand it. Because the next day, headlines in tabloids and medias discussed about it. It wass said that Celine tries to "overshadow" Aretha in that performance... In a show where they supposed to be a "tribute" to the legendary Aretha Franklin. You can see in the video that Shania and Gloria smiled and looked each other with confused look in their face, showing that they did not expect that to happen like that.
M Reza Yea it makes sense mainstream outlets would say that, especially if they are unfamiliar with black churches/charismatic churches’ singing styles which involve less emphasis on technique and more emphasis on feeling and emotion.
Just because you sing karaoke doesn't mean you don't have the creativity to come up with your own song/version. Out of all the things it could mean, it could mean you like the version you heard and want to sing it. Also Lady Gaga had a brief growling moment that actually sounded pretty cool when it's listened to with the whole song and not individually replayed. Nevertheless, funny video! ;)
Most of these people are professional singers and have no business karaokeing any other artist's songs. Nobody should sing karaoke in a concert people pay to see... the moment you build a career on imitating other people's life work (as opposed to reinterpreting their songs) you are the definition of uncreative and a thief.
It would be okay to sing a well known version of a song and cover it because you like it (For example singing Mariah Carey's version of I'll Be There instead of The Jackson Five's), but it's a completely different scenario to choose a random ass cover of a popular song and then sing it exactly the same way at a huge concert. I doubt Sarah gave credit and I know damn well that crowd didn't know about Yolanda's version beforehand. She didn't even just copy the melody changes, she literally tried to sing like her.
A lot of this was so true...but now I feel I gotta add my two cents. The reason this video even exists is because there's a huge push in today's music, especially R&B, to have these huge ranges with huge belts. Girls are /killing/ themselves in order to try and hit these sometimes impossible notes. To be honest some of what was on this video actually sounded fine to me. But one thing's for sure. All this crazy screaming/belting will definitely kill your voice! As a singer with a less than impressive belt, I feel pressured into learning how to nail really high notes and I find it hard to come to terms with the fact that my voice naturally may just not allow me to do it. And when I do go for it, I feel judged, which only makes me tighten up and everything worse. You can be a good, healthy singer without a crazy belt. But society doesn't believe that. You can hear the crowds in the audience. They go nuts for big notes. I wish people could see that there's more to singing than that. Like Karen Carpenter. She had one of the smoothest, most beautiful tones. But no one really cares because she doesn't belt. It's sad, really.
Alyssa Welker I agree with you that you can be a masterful singer whithout doing belting (all opera singers are great examples of that). And also in pop music. Apart from that, belting it's a technique that everybody can learn to do. Don't give up if you wan't to achieve it because "my voice naturally may just not allow me to do it" it's a wrong concept that will make it even more difficult to you to achieve it.
Alyssa Welker well I think very few singers have truly beautiful and unique voice, so they feel the pressure to do something extraordinary. I don't know if they really listen to themselves afterward.
lalo I really don't find having a unique voice something that important. And having a beautiful voice it's a subjective thing. So the important thing here is to have controll and technique to be able to use the voice at it's maximum capabilities.
Ignasi Martí Palet well that may be true but I don't know if that's enough to be successful or not. To me it must be either you have a great pleasant voice or brilliant and perfect technique with impressively wide range. Some divas who have both of them like Whitney, Lara and Mariah are those I'm most interested in. But it's just my opinion.
This video made me laugh. Just one note, Mariah Carey is the true Queen of Melisma (vocal runs). She is the one who started it and made it famous in pop music influencing a generation of singers and Beyonce is just one of them. Beyonce herself admits, she was influenced by Mariah Carey. But I love them both. :)
I think you're confused, we had people like WH, Stevie wonder, Luther Vandross, and countless artists that used Melismas and runs FAR before Mariah so............
Filipino have colonial mentality which limits their creativity in singing. Their good singers but often just imitate the original artists. Not just in singing, it exist on almost everything they do. They worship those they think are above them, which are every 1st world nation you always see in movies. Take in mind every Filipino are multilingual. Most of the time they speak 3 languages but they see English as superior. Such culture is their mental blocks.
I get your point on some of these but geez, what do u want. Them to sing sitting still making perfect little faces like a Barbie ... Singing has power, they're just really into it
That Aretha vs. Celine always gets me. Celine challenging Aretha head on and just WHOOPING HER ASS with graceful belting whereas Aretha just screams her head off. GOD I LOVE IT LOL
+Billy Gorr i know the feeling OMG i love those singers especially Celine but that part got me just couldn't help it but laugh so hard hahahaha Come Aretha! i'm not scared of you kkkk :-)
Billy Gorr ugh! I like Celine but she's too much of a show off sometimes. In that instance for example, such a disrespect for the Queen of Soul. Her belts may sound effortless but they are unsupported and the technique was horrible. What a mess!
I don't care what anyone says. This video is HILARIOUS! I'm a vocal performance major and there is nothing wrong with the hilarity in this video. I love it. Seriously crying from laughter :"D
To everyone getting themselves in a tizzy over this video. It's meant to be light hearted and fun. IF you don't like it then skip onto the next video. Most of what is said here regarding vocal technique etc is actually pretty true, it's just been exaggerated for comedic effect.
You got mad when Barbra was criticized? I’m sorry but, is Barbra noted in every musical Genre? Has Miss Streisand been inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame? Has Miss Streisand filled in for Luciano Pavarotti at the last moment for the Grammys at that? Better yet has she had a Top 10 hit every decade since her introduction? How many Presidents has she blessed with her voice? Inaugurations, Metals of Honor and Freedom and etc? How many funerals for slain Civil Rights leaders has she lent her talents to? She has a Wonderful voice don’t get me wrong. Funny Girl and Hello Dolly are 2 of my favorite movies but she ain’t No Aretha
+Alex MG you don't need to overdo it. Amber Riley did it fine with resonance, proper technique. Jennifer Holiday on the other hand... ugh the woman should never sing lol IDK what's worse her shitty technique or her overgrowling.
I'm sorry some fillipino singers have great voices but they dangerously lack musicianship and creativity. Literally changing their voices to imitate the artists.
LOL hell no... Filipinos can imitate the original easily but can deliver another taste of music like how KZ Tandingan have been singing Rolling in the Deep.
They imitate western artists because those are the role models and they're good. But have you ever heard of the Filipino's songs? Of course not, you only watch their English covers.
That "Karaeokeing" you were talking about is called covering and I'm sure there is nothing more touching to an accomplished artist to have their work covered by another great artist. I love hearing my favorite artists do covers of their favorite songs.
There is a difference between a cover and a carbon copy. A cover is your take, switching it up a bit and having a new approach. When you do it karaoke style, then it's not a cover. It's just you singing someone else's song.
Jacquelyn S but the problem with the example in this video is that she copied a cover of an original song-- not her own cover of the same original song... (Original Song: A. Cover: B. She sang B exactly the same, instead of making a C, that is a cover of A). Not only for voice, but for instruments as well: if you do it exactly the same, it's a bit boring. Sure, do it while learning how to play your instrument (or sing), but when you're past the learning stage, and creating, do your own version of it...
1:00 But Jennifer Holliday sung that grunting like that for a reason. When singing that song originally in the 20th century she had been through a change, but as she got older she had went through a lot of strokes. She isn't as well as a singer anymore like she used to be, but still has a special place in my heart as Effie.
This was genius! Thank you for sharing this good humored fun. :) I don't take this as hurting anyone or saying anything bad against anyone, it's just poking fun at the flaws certain people have. We all have problems with our voices, even if we are professionally trained, and if not perhaps moreso. Very funny. Thanks for this. I really needed a good laugh :)
Because she's not a creative performer that gives anything original or revolutionary to the music industry, she's a good vocalist but all her songs sound vapid and similar at some point, people admires her more because of her feminist ideals than her vocal qualities (which are a lot, but still) and she has a very self centered personality (as I could witness in her own HBO documentary). She's not flawless, she's a great performer and the fact that she stayed in the music industry for 20 years speaks for itself, but she didn't really evolve as an artist nor owns an artistry on her own. She's the best of the worst in the thrash that pop music became. But still this is all imo, so enjoy her music.
Katia Olivares clearly you haven’t done a lick of research. Beyoncé is anything but overrated. She’s admired based on her work ethic over anything. Watch a documentary and you’ll understand.
You people need to chill a bit. The person who made this is not saying anything bad about those singers, they are all icons. But sometimes they take their techniques too far, and that what it says. Stop attacking!!! I think is a great video, its funny!
I love her but I wish she'd stop doing some of these things: 1. Singing with a low larynx placement 2. Trying to sound "raspy" or "gravely" all the time 3. Trying to pull her chest voice to hit notes that she wouldn't be able to hit with chest alone 4. Gain a proper and developed mixed voice and use it!
I remember when it's my last year in High School. I heard a story about my teacher. My teacher was a singer who performs on few television shows as a guest. She was already a teacher that time. One time she performed in some type of teacher's gathering and she forgot the lyrics infront of everyone. She was really embarrassed and traumatized. So she stopped and had never sung again.
Jts Bossmania Sounding like a dumb ass? Since when? Where’s the proof? There’s too much good performances of Mariah that is underrated that no one wants to use because they want to hate Mariah. Plus, Mariah is the Queen Of Musicality/Songwriting/Producing/Songs being so difficult especially when most examples on this video are Mariah’s songs that they are trying to sing and failing!/Queen Of Runs/Riffs and of course Queen/Empress Of Agility!/Empress Of The Whistle Register/Queen Of Resonance/Having 5-6 Octaves in her vocal range/Queen Of Number One Hits with 18 #1 Number One Hits in the Billboard Top 100/Plus having #6 Number 1 Albums in the Billboard 200 Charts/3 Diamond Albums- I would count her Debut Album to be the 3rd one since it’s certified for a Diamond/Queen Of having the most sales in the Soundscan Era than any other artist/Queen Of Music Genres!/So much etc!
Jts Bossmania Even with NODULES MARIAH’s TECHNIQUE IS BETTER THAN ANYBODY ELSE LOL! AND SHE LEARNED HOW TO SING AROUND THEM! THE THINGS SUCH AS NODULES THAT ARE SUPPOSE TO HURT HER VOICE ACTUALLY MADE HER TO BE THE BEST VOCALIST IN THE WHOLE WORLD! PLUS SHE CAN SING BETTER THAN ANY MODERN ARTISTS NOWADAYS!

Mik K that’s what I thought. 😩 ugh! I only went 46 secs into this video I couldn’t take it. I’m out! Lol 😆
1. It depends
2. Make facial espressions helps a lot in singing!
3. I agree, but because I think too much is boring
4. Well, I agree (omg Christina...)
5. AGREE. Why you're a Singer if do you do karaoke?
6. Agree. People can't understand their limits...
7. Omg, so true. I try to explain it (to my family, to my Friends)... But nobody understand how shitty technic their favourite singers use!
8. I don't know... I think it's a personal taste
9. Agree... Well, I think it depends but normally I agree with you
10. AHAHAHAH
Sorry for my English, I'm not a native speaker
Honestly, why would you explain singing technique to your friends/family (unless they asked), they likely won’t hear it anyways (lack of ear training)
@@emilyrose3490honestly if people are enjoying and are feeling the performance or music then at that point it dosent really matter
I'm the only one who think that the Aretha and Celine performance wasn't a random hitted high note but a beautiful collaboration of voice that reminds me to gospel churches? (Sorry for my english🙈)
It was supposed to be that way x)
@@mhdreza not honey... It was divas live, no tribute to aretha
@@mhdreza well Aretha did ask the rest to 'lift' the song higher but only Celine took the challenge
Yeah. Even the turning back was copied by Sarah G. Hilarious!
that madonna clip gets me every time

Barbra is an amazing actress as well, so she is the only one who can pull it off those over the top gestures. The ultimate diva!!!
Christina was really trying to not copy Mariah's version of o holy night
She succeeded in not sounding like Mariah's version... but it wasn't a good rendition.
Hi #LAMBILY #lamb4life 🦋🦋🦋✌
Yes, she was just trying hard. Hehe.
But it's just my opinion.
lalo i thought we were talking about good singers, not succesful ones' s. And the singers you named had amazing technique.
No she didn't gtfoh
+Tupac Shakur Being apart of the Beyhive is knowing your knowledge of her and other divas. She was inspired by her.
+Tupac Shakur yes she did FAIL. I'm not even a fan of Mariah but she popularised Melisma what are you on about ahahaha
I think you're confused, we had people like WH, Stevie wonder, Luther Vandross, and countless artists that used Melismas and runs FAR before Mariah so............
Jeriah Mariah and many would never do thoses runs without Aretha
Filipino have colonial mentality which limits their creativity in singing. Their good singers but often just imitate the original artists.
Not just in singing, it exist on almost everything they do. They worship those they think are above them, which are every 1st world nation you always see in movies.
Take in mind every Filipino are multilingual. Most of the time they speak 3 languages but they see English as superior. Such culture is their mental blocks.

Mya Musicality shes a great singer and an okay vocalist
Mya Musicality that she is a great singer maybe?
I don't know if im here to learn or to laugh but great video anyway ill keep it on mind
WHERE IS CELINE DION AT "OVERDOING THE GESTURES, FACIAL EXPRESSIONS, ACCENTUATIONS" ?!!!
Celine is naturally an overly dramatic person but in a beautiful not unnatural way like some artists in this video.
I actually like Celine's gestures and facial expressions.
Loriane Parent Yes, of course, me too
That's part of her entertaining the audience... She is known to be a goofy funny lady with a wide voice range.....
I get your point on some of these but geez, what do u want. Them to sing sitting still making perfect little faces like a Barbie ... Singing has power, they're just really into it
But I understand some of these are really bad lol
Circle Dot Productions I like the one at the very end, with the screams in between verses. That's a real trip.

But not really.
So jeniffer Hudson was okay but Cristina is a problem?
that Christina Aguilera note was absolutely incredible, how can you not love it?
That Aretha vs. Celine always gets me. Celine challenging Aretha head on and just WHOOPING HER ASS with graceful belting whereas Aretha just screams her head off. GOD I LOVE IT LOL
+Billy Gorr i know the feeling OMG i love those singers especially Celine but that part got me just couldn't help it but laugh so hard hahahaha Come Aretha! i'm not scared of you kkkk :-)
Billy Gorr I know! I love them, but I was like "Aretha girrrllll..."
Billy Gorr ugh! I like Celine but she's too much of a show off sometimes. In that instance for example, such a disrespect for the Queen of Soul. Her belts may sound effortless but they are unsupported and the technique was horrible. What a mess!
Vine Lee Arethas we’re legitimately screamed. Celines whilst unsupported, she used a heady mix and maintained a neutral larynx without straining.
Can I growl if I'm singing Metal?
Iammoney_45 yes
Doesn't it hurt when you sing metal songs ?
I thought you'll lose your voice every month after recovering.
Raymond Tung There’s a technique for it so you don’t hurt your vocal chords
DnoNixiux Okay thanks.
DnoNixiux Then I think i have no technique, I can barely growl on B3.
Freddie Mercury did one called trying to hit high notes when you are having a bad voice day
I was going to say Freddie can do the facial expressions one.
I hate that “O_O” face 😂. It really has me laughing 😭.

To everyone getting themselves in a tizzy over this video. It's meant to be light hearted and fun. IF you don't like it then skip onto the next video. Most of what is said here regarding vocal technique etc is actually pretty true, it's just been exaggerated for comedic effect.
I mean I liked it apart when they criticised barbra... i'm sorry but there are just some people who you jus can't criticise
@@victoriacazottes8725 sorry but those expressions were ugly.
Fun? Hahhaa. Are dull? It's called insulting
Gotta say, Bey is able to grown without hurting her voice too much cause she’s been growling a lot for a minute and her voice is just getting better

Alex Mejía Gómez its so true watch Jessica Sanchez she did a lot of growling
+Alex MG to a degree, ehh. It's really about the lyrics and the message.
+Alex MG you don't need to overdo it. Amber Riley did it fine with resonance, proper technique. Jennifer Holiday on the other hand... ugh the woman should never sing lol IDK what's worse her shitty technique or her overgrowling.
chung2F5 She originated the role of Effie White on Broadway and won a Tony for it. Just saying.
Is that supposed to mean anything? Christina Aguilera has won shittons of grammys. Just saying.
people are getting mad for no reason, it is very funny and TRUE

I'm sorry some fillipino singers have great voices but they dangerously lack musicianship and creativity. Literally changing their voices to imitate the artists.
True.
Preach
LOL hell no... Filipinos can imitate the original easily but can deliver another taste of music like how KZ Tandingan have been singing Rolling in the Deep.
@@MosesGLive no. No. Mainstraim Philippine music is pure bogus. No creativity.
Jacquelyn S One thing is to do a cover. And the other to sing all the song exacly the same.
There is a difference between a cover and a carbon copy. A cover is your take, switching it up a bit and having a new approach. When you do it karaoke style, then it's not a cover. It's just you singing someone else's song.
I guess I'm the only one that doesn't care if it's changed up or the same.
Sure, do it while learning how to play your instrument (or sing), but when you're past the learning stage, and creating, do your own version of it...
once again, I guess I'm the only one that doesn't mind this.
Pop singers grunts uglily, Rock stars grunts perfectly and it sounds fucking good.
The little girl @ the end WTF???Lmfao
hahahhaha that made me hahahha so much ahhah HAHAHHAHAH

Clearly with the "butchering the song" you've never been to a black church 😂😂😂 I dont mind it though if you do it right 🤷🏽♀️
white people

And Patti and Whitney definitely come from the church. They can't help how they get into the song. Especially Whitney.
Still they're butchering THE SONG....
"It's not a silent night anymore
it's a dizzy night"
LOL omg
1:00 But Jennifer Holliday sung that grunting like that for a reason. When singing that song originally in the 20th century she had been through a change, but as she got older she had went through a lot of strokes. She isn't as well as a singer anymore like she used to be, but still has a special place in my heart as Effie.
Yeah I thought she sounded herself. She still sounds amazing but her tone has changed.Happens to every singer.Nobody's voice stays the same.

Question Mark we don’t all like Beyoncé calm down, she just said she didn’t like it don’t tell her to die
Ikr? Melismas are pretty but omg they're overrated... Just like Beyoncé
Katia Olivares explain why Beyoncé is overrated, bet you can’t
The beginning i couldn't stop laughing expecially the lady Gaga one 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lmao that shit was horrible but funny at the same time. And Christina screaming falling to the floor wtf?🤣🤣🤣

Oh my GOD !!! Love this video. Thanks for not putting the divas on a pedestal!! They are capable making mistakes too
Agreed with ya!
You people need to chill a bit. The person who made this is not saying anything bad about those singers, they are all icons. But sometimes they take their techniques too far, and that what it says. Stop attacking!!! I think is a great video, its funny!
"Shouldn't growl your way through the song." Good luck listening to death metal, especially Cannibal Corpse.
Whitney Houston is the only one who manage to reach high notes without changing her face too much
Whitney is a legend.
Well regine sings very high notes without an expression on her face
Christina Aguilera is a mess. So sad because she has a great voice. She just doesn’t know how to use it.
I love her but I wish she'd stop doing some of these things:
1. Singing with a low larynx placement
2. Trying to sound "raspy" or "gravely" all the time
3. Trying to pull her chest voice to hit notes that she wouldn't be able to hit with chest alone
4. Gain a proper and developed mixed voice and use it!
And she's still one of the best singers while you're just sitting at home and making bullshit comments about others lol
Are u crazy omg
And you know how to use a voice like hers? You wish! youre just a nobody, shes a well known singer globally.. STFU u know nothing!
She does know how to use her voice. It's just her mark fabric.
lol its not silent night anymore, lmao its a dizzy night
It's not a silent night anymore it's a dizzy night lmao
I remember when it's my last year in High School. I heard a story about my teacher. My teacher was a singer who performs on few television shows as a guest. She was already a teacher that time. One time she performed in some type of teacher's gathering and she forgot the lyrics infront of everyone. She was really embarrassed and traumatized. So she stopped and had never sung again.
5. Make the song yours, don't sing it just like the original.
9. Sing the song as the original is sung, don't try and make it your own.
Um... ok?
