    Those white sharks are enormous!

Why not fly the drone down to the surfer to warn him back to shore?
    River mouths are notoriously sharky.

The drone only had seconds of battery life left at the time of the sighting, therefore I was forced to land it immediately. I notified the local police officer that was standing only meters away from me at the time of the sighting. The officer quickly went down to the water edge and called the surfer in to inform him of what happened.
The question you should be asking is~ why did that goose paddle out after he had several warnings not to?
It was the day after Craig’s attack, there was baitfish everywhere, and the beach was closed by the authorities! 🤷

far more effective than shark nets , have a drone deployed in between certain times of the day , with some sort of siren / alarm , red flag to warn surfers of the presence of sharks .

The operator can't see the video live in HD... this shark was "spotted" later looking back at the footage... according to a local news report I read at least.

Zac Johnson real time transmission HD drones allow you to see live pictures on your phone ...

you mean like the DJI drones? From what I understand, they send 720p, which is pretty good. I haven't found any decent aftermarket HD fpv systems.
I don't think drones are a good "solution" for sharks but it would help a bit. I don't think shark nets are good at all either, in fact they just kill wildlife.
There are shark nets being trialed here, and they put on a sign on the beach, it literally says that nets are not meant to be a barrier to protect beach goers from sharks... so, what is the point. Even the government knows they don't work and they still want to use them.

As a surfer I would pay someone to look at a screen while I surf a notorious shark populated surf break , it would make my session a lot more enjoyable , all you need is to get organized and take advantage of today's technology , a beach , a bunch of surfers willing to pay someone to look after them , easy .
In South Africa they have people looking down from a cliff at selected beaches to warn them when a great white comes too close , it works .
Obviously this is not something useful if the water is murky , the sea is choppy , or there's poor visibility , but on those winter days when it's offshore and the surf is cooking it would do the job.
Just think at the NSW north coast , would you go out by yourself at 6.00 am on a perfet day at north wall Ballina ? I know I wouldn't...

no I wouldn't go out at that time either, that's breakfast time.
How long do you usually go out for at a time?
Thing is most multirotors fly for about 15minutes. Doesn't mean you can't swap out batteries though. Theoretically you could just have 10 batteries on stand by. I take three with me so I get about 45minutes.
I have been procrastinating building a shark watch plane but due to the legalities of flying around beaches I haven't committed to the idea yet. My last plane could fly for 1 hour though on one battery.
