Thanks for your review of the espresso. Have you tried the ireedman shorty soloist for tenor? I love Joe Henderson's, Rick Perry's, etc. sound and having trouble deciding.

Hi Nick. Thanks for this informative vide. I’m in the quest for a horse shoe chamber. I really love the tenor tone of Mette Henriette and by keeping that beautiful complex core in soft notes I suspect she is using a variation of Selmer soloist. I know some people have intonation issues with Selmer short shank and to avoid it they resort to the long shank version. Mettle’s mouthpiece also has a long shank so I thought I should try to find a modern tip opening mouthpiece maker that copies the design concept of the long shank soloist. Do you have any recommendation for me? Do you think if Mouthpiece Cafe had a long shank version instead would you be able to avoid pitch rise? Do you think it would still give you this tone pretty much? Thank you.

Good question! As far as I know, there isn't any modern version of a long shank but that could just be my ignorance. I know @bostonsaxshop has a version of the soloist. I believe it's called e-series

What mouthpiece do you use in situations when you need volume?

Hi Nick, have you ever tested the Espresso with any Vandoren reed? If yes, what would be your suggestion (ZZ, Traditional, red Java, green Java, etc) and reed strength?

Hi Jaime. I haven't used a vandoren on this MP. I tend to use either jazz selects of Boston Sax Shop reeds on tenor. I only use vandoren on alto at this point. Sorry!

Hi Nick, how does it feel in terms of resistance (low range especially)? I play an Otto Link TE 8* hard rubber and I'm looking also for this complex and silky tone that allows some subtone. I use Vandoren Traditional nº2 reeds, so I'm looking for a low back-pressure set-up, but the Otto link TE 8* takes to much air to my taste. What do you think would be the advantage of the Cafe Espresso mouthpiece vs. a modern Selmer Soloist E? What do you think about the Aizen SO tenor mouthpiece, which is also a copy of the Selmer Soloist short shank?

I have not tried the other mouthpieces you mention here but I would say that the Espresso will require much less air than the Otto Link. The chamber design will limit the amount of air you can put through without totally overblowing the piece.

Why do they only do 7* sizes? would be ok to jump from Otto Link TE 5 to to this Espresso 7*?

It would probably be a bit more open, but it might surprise you. With the more mellow chamber, it doesn't make it feel so wide open. I think they strive to make the most popular tip openings as a business decision.

@@nickmainella I've been playing on this piece for a couple months, and I think the sharpness at loud volumes has to do with increasing embouchure tightness. I've had to do a lot of work to stay relaxed, or else the pitch just goes everywhere because of the flexibility and responsiveness of the mouthpiece.
